Chapter 31 - Chapter 5

I woke up in an all white padded room. As I stood up I heard a sound that induced discomfort. I stuffed my fingers in my ears. The sound refused to stop. I can feel it throughout my entire body. The sound intensified so I screamed in pain. I had enough and yelled in anger. There is a type of air manipulation called combustion. It is one of the toughest and most difficult things to master. I took a deep breath and tried to focus as the sound intensified again. The wall blew away and the sound died out. I dragged myself out of the room and someone grabbed me and carried me to a gurney. I was strapped down and injected with a series of serums. The pain was unbearable. I finally passed out. I woke up to see a room made from smoke. Dark gray smoke bellowed and faded to show a dark blue wall. As I tried to pass the smoke it became an iridescent flame. The heat was nonexistent. I passed through to fall into a hole. I swerved left and right as I fell to a pitch black abyss below. The black liquid was swished in anticipation. I fell in and it enveloped me with a death grip. I opened my mouth as I gasped for air. The liquid snaked its way towards my mouth, nose, eyes and ears. It finally covered me completely and a tentacle wrapped itself around my leg and yanked me to the bottom.

I jumped up and saw that I was in the medbay of the harbinger ship called Shinju. The nurse came and explained, "The terrorist blew up the ship. I am afraid you are amongst the few survivors" I looked in the mirror and saw no difference in my appearance. I waited till the nurse left to look around. I saw a ventilation that I can fit in but before I could do anything an officer came with my discharge documents. I was taken to a supply ship. I had a feeling it was rigged. When I got in the copilot told me to take a seat. We got clearance to travel and he took off to off supplies to Frigate. After we entered the star bridge the others expressed their happiness. A few had a lot of questions. I had no answers to give. I recalled being captured. I mentioned about the possibility of escape. My memory was a complete blank. Regardless everyone was happy to see me. I was taken back to Krasna where I spent sometime repairing Calysto. People would ask me if I was alright. I made it clear how I would rather go on a mission. After a few sessions with a therapist I was given the all clear for missions. I was packing my things when a young man mentioned I was benched. The rage that filled me was enormous. I wished for something to happen so I can go. I forced myself to move on.

I watched the Naru ship take off without me. I felt a moment of loneliness. I felt like nobody trusted me. I watched as the sky turned red. The buildings turned to dust and blew away with the wind. The people caught fire as they became charcoal. They froze for a few seconds like they were a bunch of grotesque sculptures and then crumbled and mingled with the earth. I started hyperventilating as I was transported back to Anhedonia. I saw the Fyr snoozing on a destroyed riverbed. It opened its electric blue eyes. It opened its mouth and gray smoke came out like tentacles. It stared at me before going back to sleep. I took a step back and fell back on to the gurney. A man yelled, "She's awake. Quickly we have very little time before she gains the energy to do something. We are not done dosing her. She still needs to undergo cognitive recalibration." Burly men came running. I was held down with their body crushing body weight as I was strapped down. The elderly man smiled as I was given electric shock. In that moment I felt a surge of rage and electric energy flared out of my fingertips and zapped everyone. I felt the melt and the restraints loosen so I jumped out and fell down. All my energy was all but depleted so I used what's left to drag myself out. This time I met no one who was hostile. In fact someone came and carried me to the lobby. I stayed there till I felt it was possible to move my body. I saw an energy bar and a decanter filled with water. I reached out and it came willingly. I ate and drank as quickly as possible. I heard things going bang and boom so I had to find a way to get out. One door slide opened to show a hyperbaric chamber. A wall collapsed so I dragged myself towards the medical capsule. It is made of tough material so I will be safe. I managed to get near and press several controls and the glass case opened to let me in. I made myself comfortable as the glass closed only then I see the writing on the pane. Reserved for project Legion. I opened my mouth to scream. Metal rods came out from the side and opened to show syringes with different colored liquids. With perfect synchronicity they stabbed me all over my body. I was stabbed several times by different appendages wielding syringes. I felt warm liquids course through my veins. As the pain became unbearable I pressed my lips together so no one would notice. But soon the pain became too much and suddenly a thick fog burst in and lulled me to sleep. But not before I raked my nails over the glass in protest.

I felt something cold in my veins and my eyes opened to see my friends all around. I asked them a question only they can answer. I asked them if Hera had finally done the stupid and set the base on fire. They chuckled as they opened the window. I saw the base was safe and Arman was safely outside and so was Calysto. I pinched my arm and felt the pain through my arm. They realised that I believe this was a hallucination so they took me to my work station and I stuck my hand in the kiln. One of them yelled for a medic as I pulled my hand out. I flinched in pain as I dunked my injured into the cold water. I felt the burnt flesh flake off and new tissue took its place. Then skin clothed my muscles and thin fine hair grew along with nails. I raised a repaired hand and the audience was shocked. I shrugged it off as I sat down to fix my ship. The director asked me nicely, "You have gained a new ability." I replied, "I didn't get a new ability. I am Arcanon. Before it was made illegal we were injected with a substance while we were inside our mother's bellies that gave us the ability to manipulate the elements. I am the only one in a thousand years with the ability to manipulate all four. Water works like medicine. It always heals my injuries immediately. I learned that the day I escaped the Arcan military research facility. I was wrongfully captured and exploited so I escaped. I accidentally discovered the ability to heal myself. I always cpuld heal others too but it depletes my energy. Using my abilities for too long is exhausting which is why I joined the medical team during the dispute between Arman and Oblix." The director gave me a blank expression and asked me why I chose to be a fighter now. I smiled, "That is the only way I can keep Calysto. If I chose to be a medic then I would have to hand her over. When this is over I will take Calysto and disappear. I am a citizen and I have a right to be free." The director tried to soothe the situation, "No one will try to deny your right." I grinned stupidly. He blinked three times and followed me to the ship. I noticed the STAR section was missing. The security bot explained how it was ejected during a hail of rapidfire. All STAR members are safely on board in a different section so they were all safe. I entered the security code I was introduced as a citizen of Arman. The security bot asked me if I needed a different tattoo. I said I will get during the next hundred year mark. The director gave me a curious look. The bot kindly reminded me I was two hundred plus years of age. It mentioned in passing about a few who were curious about my youthful looks.

I happily walked back to my honeycomb house and laid down for a moment of peace. The information bot asked about Strata, stargazer and Lexicon. I answered with a heavy heart, "I stepped out to get the lay of the land when someone blew it up. I had to spend sometime in the lawless zone till I made my way back." The information bot wanted more information. I gave him the pocket watch. I got it back right after he downloaded all the information from it. The place was kept neat and tidy. My home was near the library again. I warned the others not to enter the hall because they will be zapped. I saw it with my eyes and the security borg thanked me for reminding the newcomers. The resistance was shocked to know I was joking. I started walking towards the nightingale hall and the others started yelling but I ignored them as I passed through. Security wasn't far behind. He thought the hall was glitching till he saw the tattoo. I made him promise not to tell anyone. When I walked out they asked me why I wasn't fried. The information bot explained my seniority status and the explorer mentality has granted me root access to the library. By explorer he means I would go to unknown territory and collect what information possible. Upon returning the information will be passed on to the server. He further explained how I am listed in the galactic cartography office as a member. Which I myself was not aware of. The knowledge acquired from childhood to recent has proven useful. I asked about the people who live in Anecostia. The cyborg grinned, "They send their regards as they have joined the rebellion. We will intercept them tomorrow and they will be our citizens again." I asked, "Can I receive them?" The chairman replied, "That's not necessary my dear. Get some rest. The resort is expecting you." I forgot senior citizens are taken to the resort section once a month for massages and other recuperating services.

I went back to fixing Calysto. The chairman asked gently, "Why do you fix your ship? It looks brand new." I retorted,"Growing up we used to have repairmen who fix every device. But it would work properly for a few days. Then it is back to repairs. By the middle of the month grandma just gives up and buys a new one. We almost go broke having these people repair our belongings. Repairs are seriously expensive. Almost equal to the amount it takes to buy one we are repairing. So I promised grandma when I was old enough. If I have any mechanical devices big or small I will learn how it works so I can fix it myself. At least I won't get scammed." The elderly man reminisced about his broken machinery. I happily laughed, "So this is a galactic issue." I noticed the governor was missing. A passing citizen mentioned he was in the medbay recovering from Kabbohera leaving his body. I was pleased to hear some good news. Apparently the security borg took him to the nightingale halls and gave him a few good zaps. That was enough for that monster to leave. The shadow beast left promising to exact revenge on us. Arman was brought to Kova for safety. I mentioned Kova's interest in me. The magistrate promised me protection. The head of STAR came with the report of the citizens who are prepared to join the resistance. I was listed as a medic until the chairman overruled it and made me a member of STAR. I got my uniform and was given a new tattoo. A curved sword deflecting a plasma bolt. The ink was raven and had a shimmer to it. It was the only way to keep Calysto so I agreed. The governor came and overruled his order and I was a citizen again. He explained, "If she is a STAR member then the Kovans can ask to conscript her. They were particularly interested in duplicating her abilities. All because they heard Arcan has stopped making elementals. Her abilities would be part of their supersoldier project." The elderly man thought it was a ridiculous conspiracy. So I had to give a demonstration in front of the resistance and the chairman. I shot fifty foot flames. Used water as a cutting tool and also healed the governor's arm. I took a deep breath and blew strong and reshaped rocks into knives and back again. So I was restored to civilian status on Arman but a fighter in the resistance. Now people understood why Kal wanted me to join him on missions.
