"They should still be over there." Adam pointed toward the distant area.
"Oh." Claire let out a quiet breath of relief, thankfully, Gilbert hadn't seen them.
"Adam, what do you want to play? Mommy will take you and Hilary for a bit. We have to leave soon," she said with a gentle smile.
"Mommy, didn't you say you'd play with me all day? Why are you leaving so soon?" Hilary asked, confused and a little upset.
She had finally seen Adam again, she wanted to play with her big brother longer.
"Mommy, let me go with you. I don't want to stay with Daddy." Adam tugged at Claire's hand, pleading.
Claire felt a stabbing ache in her chest. How she hated herself, hated that she ever returned to Heidelberg, only to end up losing her son.
"Adam, staying with Daddy is what will secure your future. Listen to Mommy, stay by his side and learn real skills. Mommy and Hilary will be waiting for the day you succeed in your studies and come to find us, all right?"
