"Fall in love with you? Don't flatter yourself. Why would I ever love a woman as fickle as you? But you are the mother of my children. I don't want them to be whispered about." Gilbert's eyes were cold with mocking contempt.
Claire let out a small laugh. "Relax. No matter what I do, it'll never compare to the scandal of you and Emma having an illegitimate daughter. If anyone deserves to be talked about, it isn't me, it's you. So maybe have some self-awareness. I could never compete with you."
Gilbert's expression darkened instantly, his gaze sharpening on her.
Claire backed toward the door, ready to run. She stopped only once she reached it, maintaining a distance of two meters, watching him warily.
After a moment of silence, Gilbert spoke in a low voice. "Come here."
Claire didn't move. She wasn't stupid enough to go closer just to be treated like dirt again.
His lips curved coldly. "Claire. I'll count to three. If you don't come over… you'll see what happens."
"One."
