"Fine, for Kate's sake, 2.5 million it is. Will you be paying by check or card?" Gilbert ruffled Kate's hair, agreeing suddenly and easily, though his gaze toward Claire carried a sly, mocking glint.
Claire's chest tightened with disgust. His money-grubbing face sickened her, but even more nauseating was the way he flirted openly with Kate. Deep down, she couldn't shake the feeling that this accident wasn't as simple as it seemed.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Watson. Ordinary people like me don't usually carry that kind of money. At most, we might have twenty or thirty thousand, that's already a lot. I simply can't pay you right now. How about another day? After all, we'll be seeing each other often. Don't worry, I won't run away." Claire forced patience into her voice.
Gilbert chuckled shamelessly. "Whether you run or not doesn't matter to me. But right now Kate wants seafood, and I'd like a little extra cash to make sure she eats well, drinks well."
