"Alvin, what exactly happened that night between you and Claire? Care to explain?" Gloria Scott was nothing like Bella Hart. She raised her voice at once, demanding answers.
Alvin turned to look at her. "Auntie, I'm sorry. I came here to apologize to you."
"Apologize?" Gloria thought he was confessing and immediately pressed her advantage, her voice sharp and cutting. "Do you think an apology is enough? Do you have any idea how much harm you've caused Bella?"
After a brief pause, Alvin replied, "Auntie, from the very beginning, I never agreed to this marriage with Bella."
"What?" Gloria flared up in anger. "Boy, you'd better watch your words!"
"I'm not speaking carelessly. From the start, I told Bella we weren't a good match." Alvin's tone was calm and steady. "All these years, I've only treated her like a younger sister. I've said more than once that she should seek someone truly right for her. If you don't believe me, you can ask Bella yourself."
