"Gilbert, look out! It's dangerous!"
Claire's heart leapt to her throat as she saw a flash of silver flying straight toward Gilbert's back. Without thinking, she screamed and lunged forward.
She didn't pause to consider the risk. All that mattered was stopping the dagger. She couldn't stand the thought of this man, once so proud, so full of life, being hurt. Not Gilbert. Not the man she had once loved so deeply.
She rushed toward him, arms outstretched.
The moment she collided with him, Gilbert felt the threat behind him. He began to turn just as the dagger came hurtling toward Claire's back. There wasn't time to block it.
His chest clenched.
He had told her to stay put. She was supposed to stay in the corner, out of harm's way. But no, she had to play the hero. And now she was about to die for it. Damn her foolishness.
Anger flared in his eyes. Blood roared in his ears.
