"Mommy! Mommy!" Adam pushed Gilbert's face aside with both hands and shouted with all his might.
Gilbert's heart dropped.
Damn it. He hadn't realized that lifting Adam like that would give him a clear view of the gate.
The boy must have seen Claire.
That woman still hadn't left. Still lingering outside like a shadow. How persistent. How infuriating.
"Adam, why do you always bring up Mommy whenever I'm playing with you?" Gilbert tried to sound hurt as he set the boy down. "You're breaking Daddy's heart, you know."
Adam blinked, his round eyes filled with confusion. "But I really did see Mommy."
"That's impossible," Gilbert said quickly, his tone turning cold. "Why would she be standing outside the gate? If she were really there, she would've come in already. Why would she just wait outside?"
Celeste gave a gentle nod. "That's right, darling. If your mommy were here, she'd be inside with us."
