c127: If You Don't Want to Be a Pokémon Master, Why Not Go Home and Sell Sweet Potatoes!
When Yoko first began interviewing the student, she didn't take his praise of Ash too seriously.
After all, it was just a group of six-year-old kids attending their first regional summer camp how exceptional could any of them really be? But as the student in front of her continued to describe Ash's feats in vivid detail, Yoko's perspective shifted dramatically.
If on the first day of camp, Ash had managed to defeat five consecutive challengers in open battle challenges using only his newly partnered Froakie and then later, single-handedly subdued a wild Gyarados during the fishing activity using sheer determination and strategic timing then that alone proved his innate talent as a Trainer was far above average.
To publicly declare a dream of "becoming the world's strongest Pokémon Trainer" not just an Elite Four member or regional Champion demonstrated a depth of ambition and clarity rarely seen, even in older contestants.
Rising at 6:30 in the morning while the other campers remained asleep, Ash would already be outside running drills with Froakie, practicing battle scenarios, or even meditating evidence of extreme discipline and self-motivation.
Layer that with his warmhearted nature, consistently helping fellow students with minor injuries using a rare form of aura-based healing Psychic energy, and it painted a portrait of a young boy with both the heart and drive of a future master.
At first, Yoko had thought the student was exaggerating. But with each example, her professional instincts sharpened from years of covering trainers in the Saffron City circuit screamed at her that this was not just another precocious child.
Born and raised in the metropolis of Saffron City, capital of Kanto's economy and home to the renowned Saffron Gym, Yoko had met her fair share of "geniuses." She'd once interviewed young psychics trained under Sabrina herself, witnessed child prodigies who memorized type matchups before they could write their own names.
But the moment the student described Ash not just as a hardworking and self-disciplined Trainer, but also as someone gifted with a rare, non-combative healing-oriented form of Psychic ability Yoko froze.
As a Saffron native, she knew better than most what that combination meant.
Talent. Dedication. Kindness. And Psychic potential.
Yoko: "Whether this student named Ash truly climbs to the peak and becomes the world's strongest Trainer someday is something only time can tell. But one thing is certain... his future achievements will, at minimum, reach the level of an Elite Four member."
And for a seasoned reporter like Yoko, the idea that she could one day look back and say she interviewed a future Alliance Elite before his rise that filled her with quiet thrill.
Yoko: "Excuse me do you happen to know where Ash is right now?"
Student: "Where... isn't he?"
He meant to say that since everyone was off filming their Pokémon short films, he wasn't entirely sure. But as his eyes swept across the camp, they immediately stopped on a familiar figure.
Emerging from the editing studio carrying Froakie gently in his arms was a black-haired boy in a dark blue hoodie, unmistakable in his calm posture and quiet presence.
The student's face brightened. He extended his arm, pointing toward the boy holding Froakie.
Student: "There! That's Ash right there!"
Yoko, turning quickly, was momentarily caught off guard.
Yoko: "Wait that student with the short black hair is Ash?" she asked, brows rising and mouth falling slightly open in disbelief.
It wasn't that he looked ordinary... but somehow, for someone with such legendary ambition and praise surrounding him, Yoko had expected something flashier. Taller. Older. Maybe even someone glowing with a dramatic aura like Sabrina's apprentices.
But there Ash was calm, focused, and absolutely real.
This morning, when the students were called to assemble at the central square of the summer camp, Yoko noticed the handsome, black-haired student standing quietly among them Ash Ketchum of Pallet Town.
In her previous life as a reporter in the mainstream cities of Kanto, black hair was a fairly common sight among those from Johto, Sinnoh, or even Hoenn, but in the Pokémon world especially within the regions represented at this camp—such dark hair stood out. That uniqueness, perhaps, is what makes Ash so memorable, and maybe why fate made him the protagonist of the Pokémon world.
Of course, it's worth mentioning Xiaohao's hair is also black! But while Xiaohao often keeps his distance, Ash seems to draw attention without trying.
Student: "Miss Yoko, are you going to interview Ash?"
Yoko: "Ah! Yes, yes. Thank you so much for accepting our interview and generously sharing such valuable insights. I hope you continue to shine in the remaining summer camp activities. The TV station and our viewers will be keeping an eye on you!"
Student: "Thanks! If you want to catch Ash, you should do it now."
"Ash rarely stays in camp. He's either training with his Pokémon or heading into the nearby Viridian Forest to befriend wild Pokémon."
After learning about Ash's habits and personality from the camper, Yoko wasted no time. She quickly followed Ash and caught up to him just as he was about to head off the campgrounds toward the forest trail again.
Yoko: "Excuse me, Brother Ash, can I borrow you for just a few minutes for a quick interview?"
"The campers we interviewed earlier all spoke very highly of you, and the audience watching at home is really interested in you!"
"Would you mind sharing a bit about yourself in front of the camera?" Yoko asked sweetly, blinking her large eyes at Ash, hopeful and expectant.
Ash: "No problem—sure!" He nodded with his usual warm smile.
Yoko: "Alright then, Brother Ash, please introduce yourself to the viewers watching the live broadcast."
Yoko squatted down just enough to hand him the studio mic without obstructing the frame.
Ash: "Oh! Okay."
"I'm Ash, from Pallet Town. I don't really have any favorite or disliked foods. And as for Pokémon well, I don't have a favorite type, because I love all Pokémon, no matter their Attribute or appearance!"
"My hobbies are training the Pokémon I've partnered with, and venturing into nature to meet wild Pokémon and learn more about them."
"My dream is to climb to the top as a Trainer and become the Pokémon World's Mightiest Trainer." Ash simply repeated the heartfelt self-introduction he had given during the opening trainee meeting two days prior, knowing it already expressed everything that mattered.
Yoko: "Wow! Brother Ash, your dream is truly inspiring. But tell us why exactly do you want to become the Mightiest Trainer in the Pokémon World?"
Ash: "I think it's only natural to have a dream like that. If I'm going to be a Trainer, then I'm going to give it everything I've got."
He turned to face the live camera directly, his dark eyes steady with determination.
Ash: "If you don't want to climb to the top as a Trainer, if you don't want to become the Mightiest in the Pokémon World, if you don't want to be a true Pokémon Master… then why not just go home and sell sweet potatoes?"
The air fell silent for a split second.
Yoko: "Pfft!!" She couldn't hold back her laughter.
TV Audience: "PFFT—Hahahaha!!"
> "As a Pokémon Trainer, if you don't dream of becoming the Mightiest and don't aim to be a Pokémon Master then go home and sell sweet potatoes!"
Comment Section Floods Instantly:
> "This Ash kid is way too serious."
> "Hmph(´^`)~ This sneaky reporter is trying to tempt me into having a son again!!"
> "He's too adorable, oh my god look at him!"
> "Not only is Ash talented, handsome, sunny, hardworking, and ambitious, but the most important thing is—he's too cute."
> "That's it. I've decided. I'm officially his mom fan now. I'll be watching every episode of the summer camp just for him."
