c126: Interview — Female Reporter's Shock!!
"Okay~ That's a wrap for today!" Ash exhaled deeply, patting his chest in satisfaction after completing the shoot of his Pokémon short film Fishing at Xiaoshitan.
Even though the main filming was done, both Ash and Froakie found it hard to leave the peaceful setting with their fishing rods so soon. The soothing rhythm of nature, the light rain, and the presence of Magikarp created a serene atmosphere that lingered in their minds.
So, the Trainer and his partner fished together for another half hour by the tranquil pool. Only after thoroughly enjoying the peaceful experience did Ash pack up and return to the summer camp. There, he approached the staff of the Saffron City TV Station to submit the footage for editing.
"Hi! Excuse me did you just finish shooting your short film? Could I interview you briefly?" called out a voice just as Ash exited the media shed after uploading the footage.
It was Yoko, a reporter from the Saffron TV crew assigned to cover the Kanto-Kalos Cultural Exchange Camp. She approached with her signature red headband, camera drone hovering behind her, microphone in hand.
"Of course," Ash replied with a calm nod, still holding Froakie in his arms. Though the camera focused on him, he showed not the slightest hint of stage fright—much like during his televised debut at the Lumiose Gym battle in the XY manga arc.
"Great, thank you!"
"I've noticed that many of the summer campers are still busy filming, yet you're already done rather early. What do you think about the quality of your short film? If you had to score it yourself, what would you give it?" Yoko asked, lowering the microphone to his level.
"Hmm…"
Ash tilted his head thoughtfully before replying. "I'm pretty confident in what we shot today. I think the overall atmosphere came through well. Out of 10 points, I'd say this short film deserves at least an 8."
Despite his calm confidence, Ash remained humble. He made no mention of others' work, avoided boasting, and offered his score based on effort and sincerity not arrogance.
"Eight points, huh? Sounds like you're really satisfied with your shoot," Yoko replied with interest. "So here's another question it's the third day of summer camp. Besides yourself, which student has left the biggest impression on you so far? Who do you think is the strongest in the camp?"
"Hmm…"
Ash hesitated slightly, then smiled. "The student who impresses me the most? The strongest? That would be Ash, who currently ranks first on the Student Achievement Scoreboard."
Yoko's brows lifted in surprise. "Oh! Is it because of his top rank on the scoreboard?"
The boy holding the Rattata shook his head gently.
"No, it's not just because of the scoreboard. There's a lot more to it."
Yoko leaned in. "Such as?"
"I'm from the Kalos Region," the boy began. "When we arrived in Pallet Town, the residents and local summer camp students had prepared a welcome ceremony. Everyone formed a small team outside the town gates to greet us."
"Among them was Ash. Although I later learned he'd overslept and arrived late that day, he was the first local I remembered clearly. At first glance, he didn't seem that reliable."
"But once the camp started, my opinion completely changed."
"On Day One, we each received our assigned partner Pokémon. Then, to break the ice, we were asked to participate in a friendly battle round.a 'Trainer Greeting Match,' where each of us had to battle five other campers."
"It wasn't a formal tournament; more like a series of one-on-one matches to get to know each other. Win or lose, we'd rotate and then head to the camp's Pokémon Center for healing."
Ash's early performance in that challenge had caught the attention of many, just as his improvisation in the Battle Chateau matches had during the manga's Kalos storyline.
"But Ash was different. He didn't wait to be matched with opponents. The moment he got his partner Pokémon Froakie he stepped right onto the battlefield and directly issued open challenges to all the summer camp students who hadn't battled yet."
"It wasn't a typical round-robin format. Ash treated the match like a Gym defense. He stayed on the field the entire time, like a challenger defending a title, defeating five different opponents in succession. He earned a perfect score of 10 points without even stepping off the stage. After that, he finally took Froakie to the Pokémon Center for recovery," the student said, still wide-eyed as he recalled the scene.
Yoko: "Wow!! That's incredible~! Like a mini-Champion defense right at camp!"
Student: "And that's not all. That same evening, Professor Oak gathered everyone for a student meeting. He asked each of us to come on stage and share our dreams as future Trainers."
"Most students who wanted to be professional Trainers talked about aiming for the Elite Four, or one day becoming an official League Champion which is pretty amazing already. But when it was Ash's turn, his answer stunned the entire room."
Yoko leaned forward: "Oh? What did he say? Now I'm really curious!"
Student: "Ash said... that his dream is to become the strongest Pokémon Trainer in the world to stand at the absolute peak."
Yoko: "Whoa!! That's such a bold and powerful dream!" she gasped, covering her mouth with surprise.
Student: "Yeah. That level of ambition left a strong impression on all of us."
"And he keeps proving himself. During yesterday's fishing challenge, for example, Xiao Hao was the first to hook a Gyarados but it broke free and attacked him. He didn't have the strength to handle it, and he was injured badly enough to need hospitalization."
"Later, we moved to another part of the river to continue the event. Ash also encountered a Gyarados but unlike Xiao Hao, he held his own. He clung to the rod with sheer grit, used his skills to outlast it, and after a full half-hour battle of strength and will, Ash successfully reeled it in and subdued it."
"Everyone now sees Ash as the top Trainer at this summer camp. No one doubts that."
Student: "And he's not just strong Ash is one of the rare humans born with Psychic potential. He's what Professor Oak called a 'Healing-Type Psychic' capable of using his aura to treat wounds."
Student: "Remember how I mentioned earlier that he overslept the morning our Kalos group arrived in Pallet Town? Well, after starting camp, he completely changed that habit. Since then, Ash gets up at 6:30 AM every single day, even before sunrise, and leads Froakie and other Pokémon through morning training drills. He's so dedicated. All of us Kalos students admire that."
Student: "And despite his strength, Ash is easy to talk to. He never puts himself above others. Whenever anyone in our group got hurt—even from a mosquito bite or a scraped knee Ash was the first to help, using his healing powers without complaint."
Student: "When Xiao Hao got attacked by Gyarados, Ash didn't hesitate. He stepped in and healed him on the spot even though it took a toll on him. By the end, he was completely drained, almost collapsing. But Ash didn't say a word of complaint."
Student: "So honestly, it's not just me. I'd say every single student in this camp is deeply impressed by Ash. He's not just powerful he's kind, hardworking, and incredibly selfless. He inspires everyone around him."
Yoko: "Wow!! That's really shigoii (so amazing)~!"
