c120: Live Broadcast! TV Station Enters Summer Camp!!
"Ash, hurry up, breakfast is ready!" came the call from the mess hall.
Ash quickly approached, still a bit sweaty from morning training. As he sat down, Gary gave him a long look and sighed. "Ash, you're seriously too hardworking. Do you know how guilty it makes the rest of us feel? At six in the morning, we're still in bed, and you're already out training with Froakie."
Ash chuckled as he grabbed a seat beside Gary. "Well, Gary, if you don't want to feel guilty, why don't you come train with me tomorrow morning? I promise, instead of guilt, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment."
Gary frowned playfully and took a sip of his steaming shrimp porridge. "Yeah, no thanks. Getting up at six-thirty is already my limit."
"Haha, then there's nothing I can do for you," Ash said, shrugging with a grin.
"By the way, do you know what activities are planned for today in the camp?" Ash turned to Mallow, who was just walking over with a tray.
"I'm not sure," Mallow replied, shaking her head. "Grandpa didn't tell me anything ahead of time."
"Come on, Gary, you're really slacking. If Professor Oak doesn't tell you, can't you at least ask someone else? You could've gone to Uncle Okadaira, the assistant coordinator."
Gary blinked. "Ugh, why didn't I think of that?"
Just then, Trevor, who was calmly peeling a hard-boiled egg at the table, glanced up. "By the way, I noticed a van driving into the camp when I came in just now."
"A van?" Ash asked, curious.
"Yeah," Trevor continued. "The logo on the van looked just like the one on the plane we flew from the Kalos Region in. I remember seeing it again at the Saffron City International Airport. Those reporters they're from one of Kalos's major media outlets. I think they're journalists who were covering our arrival."
"Wait, wait," Ash said, pausing mid-bite. "Reporters? I thought the Pokémon Summer Camp was supposed to be a closed event. Why would media reporters be coming in now?"
"I can explain that," Gary said, sounding unusually smug. He took another sip of his porridge before glancing at Ash. "But don't get mad, it's kind of a mess."
Ash narrowed his eyes. "Don't mess around just tell me."
"Okay, so during yesterday's fishing activity," Gary began, "Goh was attacked by a wild Gyarados pretty badly, actually. He ended up in the camp's medical facility for overnight observation."
Ash nodded solemnly. "Yeah, I saw him after. It looked bad."
"Well," Gary continued, "inside the camp, it didn't cause that much chaos. But the story blew up outside. This year's Pokémon Summer Camp is a major cross-regional cultural exchange between Kanto and Kalos, specifically co-hosted by Professor Oak's Laboratory and Professor Sycamore's Bratano Institute."
Ash's eyes widened slightly. He hadn't realized just how much public attention the event had attracted.
"Because of that partnership," Gary went on, "a lot of families, schools, and even trainers' associations across both regions have been watching the summer camp closely. When news broke that a participant had been seriously injured during a camp activity, the League and the organizers came under huge pressure from the public and from the parents."
"But I thought the Gyarados evolved unexpectedly?" Ash asked.
"That's right," Gary confirmed. "According to the League's report, the Gyarados was originally a Magikarp that evolved just days after the League finished a full safety scan of the camp's surrounding ecosystem."
"So, technically, they weren't negligent," Trevor added. "But still, having a newly evolved Gyarados rampage during a supervised activity? It doesn't look great, even if it wasn't entirely avoidable."
Ash frowned. "Still... something feels off."
Gary lowered his voice. "Well, here's the twist. The League also discovered another key factor in the incident: Goh had actually broken the rules."
Ash blinked. "What?!"
"Yeah," Gary said grimly. "Before the fishing event started, Goh had his Magikarp use Taunt underwater to attract stronger Water-type Pokémon to his location. He was trying to cheat maybe not to hurt anyone, but definitely to get an edge."
Ash's expression darkened. "So... that's what triggered Gyarados?"
Trevor nodded. "That's what the League concluded. The Gyarados was provoked, surfaced in a rage, and attacked indiscriminately. Goh was caught in the middle."
Ash stared down at his tray. "That explains the chaos yesterday…"
"So with all this happening," Gary said, "and the whole 'Fishing Boat Turmoil' scandal catching fire on social media, the League had to act fast. That's why those Kalos reporters are here now. The League and Professor Oak agreed to allow Saffron City TV Station and a Kalos regional outlet to enter the camp. Starting today, they'll be broadcasting the rest of the camp activities live, 24/7."
"24/7?" Ash repeated, stunned. "As in, no more privacy?"
Gary nodded. "Exactly. From now on, everything we do here training, meals, evaluations, everything will be on live TV."
Ash leaned back, gears already turning in his head. This changed everything.
The cause and effect of the Gyarados incident finally came to light, and the public outcry nicknamed the "Fishing Boat Turmoil" surrounding the students' attack—
was gradually brought under control. However, due to the severity of the safety breach, and at the insistence of both the students' parents and the wider public, significant changes were made to the summer camp's operations.
From this point forward, the previously fully enclosed Pokémon Summer Camp would abandon its closed-door policy. Journalists from Saffron City TV Station, under authorization from both the Kanto League and Professor Oak's Lab, were scheduled to enter the camp and begin live broadcasting the remainder of the camp activities around the clock. This new level of transparency was meant to ensure that parents and the general public could clearly witness everything occurring within the camp in real time.
"That's all I know," Ash added, "That's what my mom told me when I called home yesterday."
"So, the journalists from Saffron TV Station are really going to be inside the camp 24/7… and live stream everything during the rest of the real summer camp?" Ash echoed, his tone caught somewhere between curiosity and concern.
As he absorbed what Gary had told him, Ash found himself silently questioning whether this shift would ultimately help or hinder him.
The summer camp had officially begun three days ago, and so far, three competitive events had taken place. Ash had placed first in all three, showcasing a level of skill and strategy that had already caught the attention of his peers.
Now, with the TV station team entering the camp and streaming its activities nonstop, Ash was certain about one thing: these journalists wouldn't distract him. Not even a little.
For the upcoming assessments and events, whether cameras were present or not, Ash intended to give it his all. His belief in maintaining his performance, holding his lead, and achieving top if not perfect scores had not wavered in the slightest.
The goal of the Pokémon Summer Camp had always been to identify exceptional trainer talent for the League in advance. Now, with the camp being live-streamed by Saffron TV Station, his performance wouldn't just be relayed secondhand by Professor Oak after the camp ended it would be witnessed directly, as it happened, by League officials across Kanto and beyond.
Because of this continuous broadcast, Ash believed that his exceptional abilities and training instincts would be both acknowledged and appreciated by the Alliance. Simultaneously, his presence on screen would gradually accumulate public recognition across the entire Kanto Region.
In this regard, the changes were undeniably advantageous. Ash even considered leveraging the live stream exposure provided by Saffron TV to promote the online shop he had been quietly preparing to launch.
However, if he were to advertise his store openly through the camp broadcast, then his previous strategy posing as a humble Pokémon breeder in order to keep his other skills under wraps would fall apart.
Ash possessed psychic abilities, an extremely rare trait that allowed him to aid Pokémon in learning new moves more efficiently and even heal them through psychic energy. This ability, along with his advanced training acumen, would inevitably be revealed in a fully public setting.
Although his plan had always involved eventually disclosing his talents during this Pokémon Summer Camp, that decision was made with the understanding that the camp would remain a closed environment, limited to professors, assistants, and fellow trainees.
He had intended for his psychic status and trainer prowess to be known only by a select few those in a position to influence his future, particularly the League. His goal was clear: catch the attention of the Alliance, not the entire public.
But now, with the TV station embedded in the camp what was once a sealed space had been thrown completely open.
While this meant his psychic skills and his unique style of Pokémon care would be showcased to League leaders, it also meant he would quickly become a known figure throughout the Kanto Region, both admired and envied. His future online store, bolstered by widespread visibility, was almost guaranteed to succeed.
However, such exposure would not come without consequences. Revealing his secrets so brazenly would surely draw not just interest, but desire, jealousy, and scrutiny from others. His fame might rise, but so too would the risks.
"Is it worth it?" Ash asked himself. "In the coming camp events… should I lean into the spotlight or should I lay low and keep my cards close?"
He didn't deliberate for long.
Deep in his heart, he already knew the answer.
