Chapter 19 - CH 19

Luke: Reader… Reader?

Dalia: Sorry, but no.

Luke: No, what?

Dalia: I don't like putting a friend on the spot.

Luke: I thought reader wanted to add something.

Dalia: Does my friend have to answer?

Luke: Was that what Reader told you? 'Cause I didn't hear it. Or did your friend say it and delete it before anyone else could hear, but you did?

Dalia: What do you want from us, Luke? Give us some credit, man… Look, we get how you feel, at least a little. And even a little is a lot. Like you, I needed to climb a 22-floor to reach the top.

Ryan: For me it is 40.

Chris: 30.

Tommy: 70.

Lina: 100.

Ron: Mine is just 11.

Lina: See? Everyone's path is different. One step more, one step less, but in the end, we all climbed the same path once.

Jessica: Think I should step in? Or are they handling it?

Diana: You've asked that like ten times today. Chill. If they can't reach him, no one can. Relax, babe.

Jessica: …Did you send people out there, in case he jumps?

Diana: I did. But something weird happened.

Jessica: Weird how?

Diana: They didn't send anyone for three days. And honestly? They weren't planning to at all.

Jessica: That's… strange. Maybe it's because of international law. The tower connects every place on the planet, so all the countries declared it a forbidden zone—especially trying to enter from the top.

Diana: Wait, so you can like, walk down the tower and just… end up in another country?

Jessica: Nobody really knows how. But when it first appeared, every country sent their best—CIA, FBI, MI6, whatever—to explore it. A lot of them ended up in random countries instead.

Diana: So like, they opened a door in America and poof—they're in France eating the best pizza?

Jessica: If anyone hears you say that, they're gonna know that mafia's looking for you.

Diana: That's why I've got you to protect me.

Jessica: Girl, you didn't just piss off the Italian mafia—you pissed off Italy. A whole country shaped like a boot. I'm not tryna get kicked.

Diana: But seriously, it really happened like that?

Jessica: Yeah. Every team that went in from the top came out in another country. Teams that went in from the bottom? They still came out in their own turf.

Diana: So the nations freaked and made the rule: no top-down. Or it's war.

Jessica: Pretty much.

Diana: But why only the top? Why not both ways?

Jessica: Because from the bottom, they could meet other teams at the middle. But when they exited, they were still on home ground.... So there's no threat so they just forbid only the top.

Ryan: Luke, just tell us what you wanna hear and we'll say it.

Luke: If I told you, it wouldn't mean the same.

Tommy: But if you already know what you want, why isn't that enough?

Luke: that's not my question to answer.

Emma: Whoa, whoa, whoa… step back from the edge.

Luke: Relax. I'm not jumping—I'm just tired of standing. Sitting down, that's all.

Lina: Please… just be careful.

Ron: Can I say something?

Luke: Why not. [sighs] Let's hear it.

Ron: Don't close your heart to ideas you don't get yet.

Luke:Close my heart? You know what's funny? It's been three days, and all I've gotten are advice or jokes… but nobody asked—

Lina: Asked what?

Luke: About me. About my story.

Emma: I… I… I....Tell us your story, Luke. I would love to hear it.

Luke: Like I said, it won't hit the same. But… I've got another story. Let's start here: Luke isn't my real name.
