Chapter 6 - chapter 6

Chapter 6: Two Lives in One Family

Aven began to understand something new about her mother.

Hazel wasn't always home.

And when she returned—

the house felt different.

Not colder.

But quieter.

Like someone important had just stepped back into place.

Hazel Silvertone – The Woman Outside the House

Aven first noticed it one morning when Hazel was getting ready to leave.

Unlike her usual soft home clothes, Hazel now wore something different.

Elegant.

Refined.

A completely different version of herself.

Aven stared at her for a long time.

Hazel noticed immediately and smiled gently.

"Mommy has to work today," she said, adjusting Aven in her arms. "I'll be back soon."

Aven blinked.

Work?

That word didn't fully exist in her understanding yet.

She only knew:

Hazel = home.

So the idea of Hazel leaving felt… strange.

Not scary.

Just unfamiliar.

A small pause later, Aven reached out and grabbed her sleeve.

Not tightly.

Just enough to stop her for a second.

Hazel froze.

Then her expression softened.

"Oh?"

Aven looked at her quietly.

Hazel bent slightly closer.

"You want me to stay?"

Aven didn't answer.

She couldn't.

But she didn't let go immediately either.

Hazel gently touched her forehead.

"I'll come back," she promised softly. "I always come back to you."

Only then did Aven slowly release her grip.

Alder Notices First Again

Alder was already waiting nearby.

As soon as Hazel left, he crawled toward Aven immediately.

And this time—

Aven turned toward him first.

"Alder."

It came out slightly clearer than before.

Alder stopped.

Then immediately grabbed her hand.

"Aven!"

He said her name like a declaration.

As if correcting her pronunciation was a mission he took personally.

Aven didn't pull away.

Instead—

she squeezed his hand back.

Very lightly.

Alder froze.

Then smiled so widely he almost lost balance.

From that day onward—

he started holding her hand more often.

Like he was afraid she might disappear if he didn't.

Learning Each Other Without Words

As the days passed, their bond grew in quiet ways.

Alder would crawl closer when she woke up.

Aven would look for him first when she opened her eyes.

Sometimes she would make small sounds just to get his attention.

And sometimes—

he would simply sit beside her without moving, just to be near her.

No words were needed.

They understood each other in fragments.

In presence.

In habit.

In familiarity.

Ethan Begins Teaching Her Without Knowing It

Ethan started doing something new.

He began placing objects in front of Aven and naming them slowly.

"A cup."

"A book."

"A light."

He didn't expect her to respond.

But she did.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Aven would repeat small sounds back at him.

Sometimes correctly.

Sometimes not.

But every attempt made Ethan pause for a second longer than usual.

As if realizing she was learning faster than expected.

Aaron's Jealous Affection

Aaron, of course, noticed the growing closeness between Aven and Alder first.

And he did not handle it well.

"I was gone for ONE day," he complained dramatically, sitting in front of Aven. "And you already like Alder more?"

Aven stared at him.

Then slowly reached out—

and touched his cheek.

Aaron stopped mid-sentence.

"…oh."

Silence.

Then:

"I forgive everything."

Ian's Quiet Position

Ian didn't interfere.

He rarely did.

But he also didn't leave her side.

Instead, he adapted.

If Alder sat close, Ian sat nearby.

If Aaron was loud, Ian stayed quieter.

If Ethan was teaching, Ian observed.

He never tried to compete.

Just… remained.

Like a steady shadow in her growing world.

Hazel's Second Life

That night, when Hazel returned home, Aven noticed something new.

Her mother looked tired.

Not emotionally—

but physically.

But the moment she saw her children, it disappeared.

Hazel knelt in front of them immediately.

"I missed you all," she said softly.

Aaron rushed to her first.

Ethan stood respectfully.

Ian just looked at her quietly.

And Alder—

Alder reached for Aven immediately.

Hazel smiled at the sight.

Then picked Aven up gently.

"You behaved well today?"

Aven stared at her.

Then, after a pause—

she leaned slightly into her mother's shoulder.

Hazel froze.

Then softened instantly.

"…you're becoming more expressive," she whispered.

Aven didn't respond.

But she stayed there.

That was enough.

Aven's Quiet Realization

That night, after everyone had settled, Aven lay in her crib again.

Alder was sleeping nearby.

Small hand still slightly reaching toward her even in sleep.

Aven watched him for a long time.

Then thought quietly:

He always comes closer… even when I don't ask.

A pause.

Then another thought:

I do the same.

She turned her head slightly.

The house was silent.

But not empty.

Never empty.

And for the first time—

Aven understood something simple.

She wasn't alone in this life.

Not anymore
