Chapter 37 - Vortex Reverse

The next day was Tuesday. Ah shit… you know what that means. Charms class.

God. Since Yejun skipped detention yesterday, he just knew Ms. Keira wasn't gonna be thrilled. He got ready slowly, fully aware he'd be late but he didn't care. He was already in enough trouble with her, so a few extra days of detention wouldn't change anything. By the time Yejun made it to class, he was slightly late. Ms. Keira shot him a look that said it all. He glanced around the classroom, hoping, for once, his friends would be there. Of course not. Of course they just had to be off at that stupid group thing or whatever. Honestly, pretty surprising Jae didn't sign up—but whatever. At least Yejun had someone to talk to.

He plopped down next to Jae.

"Yo, Jae."

Jae didn't look up, just made a face annoyed, per usual.

"What are we doing today?"

Jae finally looked up. "First half we—"

Before he could finish, Ms. Keira's voice cut in.

"For those who came late and didn't hear what we're doing—" she paused and glanced directly at Yejun. "First half, take notes. Second half, you'll be testing out spells. Now this is a big deal I'm letting you do this. Oh, and Yejun…" She stopped. The whole class looked at him. Of course, Doyun had that grin on his face again. "I swear to god, if you make a mess again, it's not ending well."

She walked back to her desk as the class exploded into whispers.

Gosh… what's her problem? Yejun was supposed to be taking notes, but yeah… he wasn't really paying attention. He might regret it later, but whatever. He'll be fine. At some point, Ms. Keira stood up, muttered a spell, and bam—everyone's notebooks snapped shut.

"Okay, time to actually try the spells out. This assignment is also in pairs. But unlike last time, I'm assigning partners."

Suddenly, some kid stood up.

Guess who?

No shit it was Damian.

"Miss, miss? Miss, can I choose my partner—"

"No," Ms. Keira said immediately, without even letting him finish.

Ah shit. This isn't going to be good.

"Alright," she continued. "If no one has any more questions, I'll start announcing the pairs. First pair…" Her eyes scanned the room and landed on Damian. "Let's start with you, Damian. You'll be with Artemis."

Wait, weren't those two literally friends? That was the same kid who told Damian to sit down last time they were practicing spells. Damian and Artemis high-fived each other like this was a sleepover and not a graded exercise. Ms. Keira announced a few more pairs. Yejun was hoping to get paired with Jae or maybe even Owen. But nope. Jae got paired up with some random girl, and Owen said he needed to use the bathroom and never came back. Probably skipping class. Legend. Now, there were only two people left without a partner. Yejun... and of course, Doyun. "And last pair, Yejun and Doyun. Pair up. You'll be the final ones to test the spells."

Ah shit. This is not gonna end well.

Doyun strolled over to him, that smug-ass grin on his face.

"Missed me?"

Yejun rolled his eyes. "Fuck no."

They spent the whole time bickering, not even watching what the other students were doing. It was honestly impressive how unprepared they were.

Then it was their turn.

"Next and final pair: Yejun and Doyun."

Oh shit.

Yejun and Doyun walked to the center of the classroom where there was open space for dueling. Yejun had some idea of what spell to use, but he barely remembered how to cast it. It was a knockback spell or something "Vortex Under"? Or was it "Vortex Over"…? Shit, who knows.

Before Yejun could fully process it, Doyun was already aiming at him.

"Vortex Reverse!"

Ah shit… so that's what it was called.

Yejun reacted instantly. He sucked at spells, but at least he knew some defense.

"Veil of shadows"

He pointed his wand where Doyun's spell was aimed. The spell deflected—barely—but it worked.

Now it was Yejun's turn to attack.

"Vortex… reverse?" he muttered, unsure. He said it kinda quiet—but it worked. The spell actually worked.

But Doyun, shit. He reversed it???

"Chrono turn around"

With no effort at all, Doyun sent the spell back at Yejun.

Fuck. Yejun had like a millisecond to think.

And then—boom. The spell hit him. A blast of white-and-red mist smacked him right in the stomach. It was powerful too like something invisible had punched him in the gut. Yejun got knocked flat on his back. He sat there for a second, rubbing his back, which somehow hurt more than his stomach even though the spell didn't even hit there. Before he could get up, the whole class started clapping.

Even Ms. Keira didn't look as mad as usual. She cleared her throat.

"Alright, alright. That's enough clapping." She glanced at the two of them. "I must admit… that was pretty impressive."

Yejun quickly realized he was still on the floor. He started to push himself up, but Doyun was already standing over him—smirk in place, cocky as ever. Hmm… this was actually a decent angle to draw someone from.

Nope. Focus, Yejun. Not the time.

"Pfft. You're actually ass at this, Yejun."

Yejun narrowed his eyes. "No I'm not!"

"Oh yeah?" Doyun tilted his head, leaned forward

...and whispered into Yejun's ear

"Fifth hallway in the dungeon. Today. 8 p.m. We're skipping detention again."
