Comedy Central's Roast was never known for playing it safe. The show is, in Kevin Hart's own words, "vulgar and crude." There are almost no boundaries. Calling a Black man the N-word is fair game if the timing is right.
No matter how famous you were, no matter how many championships you had won, for one night you became the target.
And tonight, the target was Lin Yi.
The first person to step onto the stage was Stephen Curry.
The baby-faced assassin walked out smiling, microphone in hand.
"It's an honor to be here tonight for my good friend Lin."
He looked toward Shaquille O'Neal.
"And honestly, it's even better because I get to see Shaq again."
The crowd laughed.
"Shaq has had more nicknames than most players have awards."
"The Diesel."
"Superman."
"The Big Aristotle."
Curry paused.
"One of the greatest centers in NBA history after..."
He started counting on his fingers.
"Wilt."
"Russell."
"Kareem."
"Hakeem."
"David Robinson."
"Patrick Ewing."
"Yao Ming."
"Dwight Howard."
He continued listing names.
The audience slowly realized what he was doing.
When Curry finally reached Shaq's name, the crowd exploded.
He had intentionally placed Shaq just outside the top tier.
Kobe Bryant, sitting nearby, immediately noticed.
The Mamba smiled.
Even at a roast, Kobe respected attention to detail.
Curry turned toward Kobe.
"Speaking of legends, I see someone smiling..."
"Kobe Bryant."
The crowd applauded.
Curry smiled.
"For years, people criticized me."
"They said I just shoot too much."
He shrugged.
"Then I looked at the numbers."
"My career three-point percentage is 43.4 percent."
"Kobe's career field-goal percentage is 44.9."
He paused.
"So technically, if we both take ten shots..."
"I might be slightly more efficient."
The audience erupted.
Curry looked at Kobe.
"So my question is..."
"How did you become an icon for taking difficult shots, while I get criticized for doing the same thing?"
Kobe laughed and shook his head.
Curry then turned toward Lin Yi.
"Now Lin..."
"We all know Kobe's your idol. You've copied the footwork, the fadeaway, the scowl… everything except the shooting percentage. Lin's the king of toxic positivity. He keeps telling interviewers he plays on talent. Lin, you do play on talent. Because if you were my size, you wouldn't be great. You'd be unemployed."
Harden's eyes finally opened, and he shouted. "Get his ass, Steph!"
Lin just covered his face.
Steph didn't let up.
"And when we meet in the Finals, I'm retiring you. Permanently. After that you can put that height and those arms to work restocking the top shelves at Walmart. They'll pay you by the hour. You'll finally be useful."
The crowd lost it.
Here's the polished version of the Beckham segment, locked into the same tight Western roast style:
---
After Curry left the stage, David Beckham and Blake Griffin followed.
Beckham didn't waste a second.
"Hello everyone. I'm David Beckham. I'm from England."
He looked at Kobe.
"Kobe… England is in Europe."
The crowd laughed.
Then he turned to LeBron.
"LeBron… Europe is a continent."
Bigger laugh.
Finally he locked eyes with Shaq.
"And Shaq… a continent is not something you can order at a restaurant."
Shaq threw his head back, laughing.
Beckham pivoted to Lin.
"Lin Yi. I have one word to describe him."
He let it hang.
"Unbelievable."
The crowd already knew where this was going.
"Actually… I have three."
"Unbelievable."
"Unbelievable."
"Unbelievable."
Everyone caught the Barkley reference instantly. The arena howled.
Beckham smiled, paused just long enough for the room to lean in, then shrugged.
"Soo… I got nothing. I mostly came to enjoy the show."
The place erupted in boos.
Victoria, sitting a few seats away, simply covered her mouth and laughed straight into the camera.
Then came Blake Griffin.
His jokes were strong.
His timing was not.
The material was good, but Griffin delivered everything too quickly, leaving some of his best lines without enough impact.
Kevin Hart summarized it perfectly.
t I think you belong on E! News."
The audience laughed.
Then Scarlett Johansson walked onto the stage.
The Black Widow needed no introduction.
She looked at Kevin Durant and smiled. Durant looked like a man who had just been chosen by God.
Three seconds later, the smile turned lethal.
"Kevin… I've heard you've been talking about drinking my bathwater."
She paused.
"That's adorable. Really. But you should know something."
"Lin already turned that water into soup last week. Thick. Cloudy. Extra protein."
Hart lost his mind.
"That's fucking nuclear!"
Durant's soul left his body so hard he almost folded in half.
Lin sat there realizing the entire arena had just been told he turned Scarlett Johansson's bathtub into a crime scene — and that no amount of bleach would ever make him clean again.
Durant took the stage still traumatized and immediately forgot half his lines. Instant KO.
Taylor Swift followed. Hart had already roasted her for writing the same breakup song seventeen times. She repaid him by slowly reading out a hotel room number on stage. Hart wrote it down like a man who still believed in Christmas.
Swift smiled sweetly.
"Kevin, you might want to bring a step-stool. And maybe a camera."
"Because when Lin's fiancée finds out what happened in that room tonight, she's going to want evidence."
"And I want her to see every single inch."
Lin stared into the middle distance like a man watching his career, his engagement, and his remaining dignity get gang-banged in 4K.
Then Shaq arrived, still salty about Curry.
The Big Diesel immediately went after Stephen Curry.
"Steph, you're an incredible player."
"But let's be honest."
"You were born at the perfect time."
The audience laughed.
"If you played in the 90s, some coaches would have looked at you and said, 'He's talented.'"
"Then they would have looked at your size and said, 'Maybe he should hold the clipboard.'"
Curry laughed from his seat.
Shaq then shifted his attention toward old-school basketball.
"I have to agree with Karl Malone on one thing."
"The NBA has changed."
"Back then, players were built like trucks."
"Now we have guys like Steph running around shooting from half court."
He looked at Curry.
"Somehow, it works."
The crowd applauded.
Then Shaq turned toward Lin Yi.
"Lin."
"You have three MVPs."
"Two championships."
"You're one of the greatest players in the world."
He paused.
"But until you build a dynasty, you're still just collecting trophies."
The crowd reacted.
Shaq nodded seriously.
"Look at me."
"I had great teammates."
"Great coaches."
"And a great organization."
"That's how championships happen."
For a moment, it sounded like genuine advice.
Then Shaq smiled.
"Of course, I also had Kobe."
He looked toward Bryant.
"Kobe pushed me to become better."
Kobe nodded.
Shaq continued.
"And then Kobe pushed me all the way to Miami."
The crowd exploded.
Kobe immediately laughed.
Shaq shrugged.
"What?"
"I said he pushed me."
Even Kobe couldn't argue.
Shaq then returned to Lin Yi.
"And another thing."
"You're seven feet tall."
"You block shots."
"You dominate the paint."
"But every time you hit a jumper, you celebrate like you just dunked over someone."
He imitated Lin Yi's celebration.
"Chest out."
"Roar."
"Do that gunshot celebration and walk around like you just ended someone's career."
The crowd laughed.
Lin Yi covered his face.
The worst part was that Shaq was right.
The man could make nonsense sound completely convincing.
After Shaq left the stage, the night continued.
James Harden stepped up next.
His target was obvious.
"Lin Yi, my brother."
"I have one problem with you."
"You are better at drawing fouls than me."
The crowd laughed.
"That hurts."
"Because I've spent years perfecting that skill."
Harden shook his head.
"This nigga would be falling like some Disney princess, and guess who the prince is... the ref."
The crowd went berserk.
Kobe followed.
"Kobe Bryant."
He pointed at himself.
"I might eventually become the NBA's all-time leader in missed shots."
The audience laughed.
"But that's okay."
"Only great scorers get enough opportunities to miss that many."
He looked toward Shaq.
"And honestly, if Shaq had made more free throws, he might have challenged me."
Shaq laughed.
Everyone expected Kobe to continue attacking Shaq.
Instead, Kobe turned toward Lin Yi.
"Lin."
"Don't worry."
"You have plenty of time."
"One day, that record will belong to you. "
The audience exploded.
Lin Yi stared at Kobe.
"Really?"
Kobe smiled.
LeBron James was the final major guest to take the stage.
The King immediately went after himself.
"People call me King James."
He paused.
"But unfortunately..."
"I don't have a crown."
The audience laughed.
"That's why tonight makes sense."
"Lin's the main event; I'm the supporting act. But I sleep fine, because I know my son will win a ring before Lin's son does."
The room exploded.
Even Curry and Kobe laughed at the accidental damage.
Lin Yi nearly fell out of his chair.
Alright.
Everyone has had their turn.
The stage was cleared. Lin stood up.
The roast had been brutal.
But Lin Yi had expected this.
To prepare for the night, he had spent weeks reading fan discussions, analyzing jokes, and studying every possible criticism.
