Chapter 7 - Careless Waiter

That morning, the atmosphere felt different. Diana still seemed pressured and slightly traumatized after last night's events. Her eyes couldn't stop scanning every corner of the room, and it seemed she couldn't be far from Nathan, as if she was afraid something might happen again. Nathan could feel it, and though he tried to stay calm, his heart was slightly troubled.

"Diana," Nathan said softly, looking at her with understanding, "you don't have to follow me everywhere. You can relax, we still need to find that fortune teller."

Diana nodded slowly, though her eyes still looked anxious. "I know, Nathan. But... I'm afraid last night's incident might happen again."

Nathan approached her and gave a smile that he hoped would reassure her. "I'll always be here to protect you. But you also have to be strong. We need to finish this."

They sat together and began to eat breakfast as usual, though the atmosphere was a bit awkward. Nathan tried not to let his mind wander, but the talk about the fortune teller still haunted his thoughts.

After breakfast, they decided to continue searching for information about the fortune teller. They visited several people around the city, hoping someone knew something, but they still hit a dead end. The townspeople seemed to know nothing. Nathan grew more frustrated, and his mind returned to the vampire's words from last night. "Found you."

What did it mean? Why did that creature say that? Nathan felt that there was something bigger than just a group of vampires they had to face.

Finally, after almost an entire day of no results, they decided to take a break at a place to eat. Diana, starting to feel hungry, suggested they stop for a moment, and Nathan agreed.

They sat at the dining table, still thinking about what they were up against. When their food arrived, the waiter seemed a bit rushed and accidentally spilled some food on their table. The waiter looked very nervous.

"Oh, I'm so sorry, sir! I'll replace this food right away," he said with a face full of regret.

Diana and Nathan just smiled slightly, not angry at all. The waiter quickly went back to the kitchen to get new food. However, at that moment, they heard a loud voice from behind.

The waiter was being harshly scolded by his boss. The voice sounded rough and impatient, berating the waiter with quite hurtful words. Nathan and Diana exchanged glances, feeling sorry for the waiter.

The waiter returned with a slightly flushed face, looking very anxious. However, they didn't say anything, only accepted their new meal with genuine smiles.

"Don't worry about it," Nathan said to the waiter, trying to offer some comfort. "It's okay, we're not angry."

The waiter just awkwardly nodded, his eyes a bit brighter upon hearing Nathan's words. "Thank you, sir," he replied quietly, then went back to the kitchen.

Diana looked at Nathan and then said softly, "Poor guy. It looks like he's really working hard."

Nathan nodded, smiling a little. "Sometimes we don't know what others are going through. Maybe for them, it's a struggle to survive."

They continued eating in silence, but there was a different feeling this time. Perhaps living in this world full of chaos and danger forced everyone to fight—whether for survival or to uncover hidden truths.

After feeling full and resting for a moment, Nathan and Diana returned to their main objective: searching for information about the mysterious fortune teller. Although they had been going around since yesterday, the results were almost nonexistent. But this time, luck seemed to be on their side.

An old man sitting in front of his house finally gave them a small clue. His face was full of wrinkles, but his gaze was sharp, as if he held many secrets he was reluctant to reveal.

"You're looking for that fortune teller?" the old man asked, his voice raspy and heavy.

Nathan and Diana nodded eagerly. "Yes, sir. Do you know where she is?" Nathan asked hopefully.

The man exhaled deeply before speaking. "That fortune teller is very reclusive and rarely socializes. Only a few people know of her whereabouts, including me," he said quietly, as if ensuring no one else could hear.

Diana nodded quickly. "We really need to meet her. Can you tell us where she lives?"

The man stared at them for a few seconds before finally giving them the address they needed. "But remember," he warned, "she's not someone you can approach just like that. If you want to meet her, be prepared to face something you might not expect."

Hearing that, Nathan and Diana exchanged looks. Their feelings were mixed—happy because they had finally gotten a lead, but also anxious about the old man's warning. However, they still thanked him sincerely.

"Thank you so much, sir. We really appreciate it," Nathan said, bowing slightly.

After receiving that valuable information, they didn't waste any time. Nathan and Diana quickly headed toward Rovan's house. Yesterday, when they spoke, Rovan had mentioned his address. With eagerness, they walked quickly, almost running, wanting to share the good news with Rovan.

However, when they arrived in front of his house, the atmosphere changed immediately. The house looked very quiet, even somewhat gloomy. The lights inside the house were off, and the windows were tightly shut, as if the inhabitants didn't want to face the outside world.

Nathan knocked on the door a few times. "Rovan, it's me, Nathan. Diana is here too."

A few seconds later, the door opened slowly, revealing Rovan, who looked much more gloomy than usual. His face was a bit pale, his eyes seemed empty, and his posture was weak.

"Rovan, are you okay?" Diana asked, her voice full of concern.

Rovan sighed heavily before answering, "I... haven't left the house since yesterday." He lowered his head, his hands slightly trembling. "I'm scared, Nathan. Everything's happening too fast... it's too terrifying."

Nathan looked at his friend with sympathy. He understood Rovan's feelings—not everyone could immediately accept the reality that they were facing something far beyond human logic.

"We understand, Rovan," Nathan said softly, trying to calm him. "But we can't keep hiding. Diana and I finally got some information about the fortune teller."

Rovan's eyes brightened a little at hearing this news, although the fear still lingered on his face. "Really? You know where she lives?"

Nathan nodded. "Yes. We were given her address."

Rovan seemed to think for a moment, then sighed. "I'm glad we finally have a lead, but I'm not ready to leave the house. I still need time."

Nathan and Diana exchanged looks before Nathan lightly patted Rovan's shoulder. "I understand. You don't have to force yourself. But we need you, Rovan. So, when you're ready, you know where to find us."

Rovan nodded slightly, then looked at Nathan with a guilty expression. "Sorry about yesterday... I was too angry with you."

Nathan smiled faintly. "It's fine, I didn't take it to heart. What's important now is that we focus on what's ahead of us."

After talking for a while, Nathan and Diana said their goodbyes. They walked away, leaving Rovan with his thoughts.

As they were on their way home, something happened. Nathan, who was walking casually, suddenly bumped into someone, causing that person to fall.

"Oops, sorry!" Nathan quickly said, helping the person up. When Nathan saw the person's face, he was shocked.

It was the waiter from the restaurant earlier.

However, the man's face now looked much more somber. His eyes were empty, and his shoulders drooped, as if the weight of the world was on him.

"Hey, are you okay?" Nathan asked with concern.

The waiter sighed deeply before replying, "I... was fired."

Diana was shocked. "Huh? Why?"

The waiter wiped his face tiredly. "I was too careless, upset customers, and my boss couldn't take it anymore. So, I got fired today..."

Nathan and Diana exchanged looks, feeling sorry for him. They knew very well that his boss had scolded him harshly earlier.

"We're sorry to hear that..." Diana said softly.

Nathan nodded. "You must be really disappointed. But listen, you're not a failure just because of one job. Sometimes, failure leads us to something better."

The waiter looked up and stared at Nathan. There was a slight warmth in his eyes, despite the sadness still clearly visible. "You're really kind... thank you."

After a moment, the waiter sighed and gave a small smile. "By the way, my name is Johann Thane."

Nathan and Diana smiled slightly as well.

"I'm Nathan, this is Diana," Nathan replied, extending his hand. Johann hesitated but eventually shook Nathan's hand firmly.

Although Johann seemed calmer now, there was still an aura of sadness surrounding him. Nathan couldn't explain it, but something about this man made him feel like they would meet again.

After parting ways, Nathan and Diana continued their journey home, while Nathan's mind began to fill with new thoughts. About Johann. About the fortune teller. And, of course, about the vampire that kept haunting them.

After saying goodbye to Johann, Nathan and Diana continued their walk home with lighter steps. They talked occasionally, but their minds were still occupied with the events that had just occurred. However, something caught their attention along the way: a night market that looked ready to open.

Diana, who had seemed anxious and gloomy earlier, suddenly looked at the night market with more lively eyes. The colorful lights starting to glow, the cheerful laughter from the crowd that had started gathering, and the tempting smell of food in the air lifted Diana's spirits a little.

"Hey, Nathan... look, the night market!" she exclaimed cheerfully. "It's finally open, right? It looks so fun!"

Nathan looked at Diana with a slight smile. Although their days were filled with worry and tension, seeing Diana so excited reminded him of the simpler and happier side of life.

"Well then, how about we stop by for a bit?" Nathan replied with a nod, trying to comfort Diana. "But let's wait until it's really open, so we can fully enjoy the atmosphere."

Diana immediately smiled brightly upon hearing that. "Really? Come on, come on! I've been wanting to go to a night market again for so long!"

The two of them walked toward the night market, which was starting to get crowded. Many people were gathered around stalls selling food, toys, and other goods. The atmosphere that night was filled with joy, although in Nathan's heart, there was still a lingering concern that was hard to shake off. However, seeing Diana looking cheerful again made the weight he carried feel a little lighter.

Upon arriving at the night market, they wandered through the street filled with various stalls and colorful tents. There were all kinds of typical night market foods available, from crispy fried potato chips, cotton candy, to heavier foods like satay and meatballs. There were even small games that brought out the laughter and happiness of the children playing them.

"Wow, look at that!" Diana exclaimed, pointing at a ring toss game. "I want to try that!"

Nathan chuckled softly, seeing Diana's enthusiasm reignite. "Alright, then let's give it a try."

They joined the crowd of people who were waiting in line for the game. Diana looked very excited as she tried to toss the rings onto the target, and Nathan couldn't help but smile at her. Even though they didn't know what would happen next that night, for a moment, they could forget all the things weighing on their minds.

After a while, Diana managed to win a small prize—a cute teddy bear that she immediately hugged tightly. "Look, Nathan! I won!"

Nathan smiled proudly. "Nice job, Diana. That teddy bear suits you perfectly."

Diana laughed lightly, feeling a happiness she hadn't felt in a long time. That night, her mood felt much better. Although the world outside was filled with tension and mysteries yet to be solved, for that moment, they could just enjoy each other's company and forget about the scary things.

They continued to walk around the night market, sampling food, enjoying games, and chatting about things they liked. Everything felt simple, yet so precious. Nathan knew that even though tension and danger would always loom, for a moment, Diana could experience the pure happiness she so needed.

And Nathan, though his mind was still full of questions, felt a little more at peace. In the middle of that joyful night, he realized one thing: sometimes, little things like this could bring more peace than an endless search for answers.
