The night after that conversation settled over the apartment like a quiet dream that Ayla did not dare disturb.

For a long time she remained sitting on the sofa exactly where Silas had left her, the tablet still held carefully between both of her hands as if it were something fragile that might disappear if she loosened her grip even slightly. The screen had dimmed to darkness several minutes ago but she had not noticed.

Her eyes were fixed on the black reflection staring back at her.

Her own face looked unfamiliar.

Soft.

Flushed.

Her heart was beating far too fast.

Slowly she lifted one hand and pressed it against her chest as if she could physically calm the restless rhythm beneath her ribs. It felt impossible to believe what she had just heard.

Silas had said they would live together.

For years she had trained herself not to hope for anything from him.
