Chapter 520: The World Itself Is Against You
Kuisqi would never have imagined this. Before, when he was focused on evasion and stalling, he had managed to narrowly escape Arthur and Groudon's pursuit several times. But now, when he decided to go all-in and fight to the death, Arthur had nearly beaten him to a pulp before Groudon even made a move!
He was afraid, he was angry, he was roaring, and he couldn't accept it!
"I am a Champion!!"
But his final, desperate roar couldn't bridge the gap in combat ability. Arthur closed in and slashed upward with his sword!
Even though Kuisqi tried to dodge with all his might, he only managed to avoid a fatal blow from the first strike. An arc of light flashed, and his right arm was severed at the shoulder!
"ARGH!!"
Kuisqi let out a bloodcurdling scream of agony. He had just emphasized that he was a Champion, but the power of a king had deserted him in an instant.
In the face of death, his mind was clearer than ever. "Rapidash, ram him!"
The Champion's battlefield judgment was still sharp. He had seen early on that Gengar and Charizard were Arthur's main forces. His Metagross was currently trapped by Gengar's Shadow Tag and wouldn't be able to escape anytime soon. But Rapidash still had a chance! Arthur's Lapras wasn't strong enough! And in the desert, the Water/Ice typing was at a natural disadvantage!
He saw it clearly; there was still a chance!
But—
The moment Rapidash tried to move, the sand nearby exploded! The fastest among the arriving Chieftains, the Krookodile Chieftain, had used Dig to reach the front lines first!
Bursting from the ground with its jaws wide open and claws spread, it pounced on Kuisqi's Rapidash like a hungry tiger! Its ferocious, mocking eyes seemed to ask—
"Surprise, motherfluffer!"
Rapidash let out a long neigh as it was tackled to the ground. The Seven Chieftains of the Ashen Desert might not be at the Champion level, but they were certainly the elite among captains! Rapidash wasn't Kuisqi's ace, and even in a fair fight, it might not have beaten the Krookodile Chieftain. Being ambushed like this sealed its fate!
Pinned to the ground, it was subjected to a series of death rolls by the Krookodile, like a zebra falling into the jaws of a crocodile!
Seeing that Rapidash was out of the picture, Kuisqi gritted his teeth and rolled away clumsily, screaming as he went. "Togekiss, come back!"
Sand getting into the wound on his severed arm caused a pain so intense he almost blacked out. But his fierce will to live kept him going.
However, in the sky, Togekiss, who had just gained the upper hand in a clash with Lina, encountered another obstacle. It hadn't expected a third Charizard to be in the air!
Old Flame was exhausted, and Lina was intercepting Raichu. But at that moment, Togekiss spotted a slender female Charizard entering its field of vision! It was Old Flame's mate!
The whole Charizard family was in the fight today! Although her Mega form was artificially induced and her actual combat power was being surpassed by her daughter, she could still step up and deliver a crucial hit when it mattered!
Blocking Togekiss's dive, she turned with determination and swung her tail! The move—Dragon Tail!
Using the forced switch-out effect of Dragon Tail, she hit a beautiful home run, sending Togekiss flying far away! Not only did this prevent it from joining the battle below, but it also sent Togekiss flying straight toward the source of the scorching sun in the distance.
As Togekiss struggled to stabilize itself, a massive pillar of fire, dozens of feet in diameter, engulfed it from below!
Groudon: Flamethrower!
"NO!!"
Looking up and seeing his Togekiss plummeting from the sky, trailing sparks and smoke, Kuisqi let out a despairing wail.
But that was just the appetizer. Before he could call for any more of his Pokémon to save him, another attack arrived first, cutting off his cry for help.
Another beam of pure white, high-energy light shot across the battlefield! Exeggutor's second Solar Beam had arrived!
Little Eevee, having just delivered a headbutt, quickly used his Chlorophyll-boosted speed to jump away. He looked back just in time to see the Solar Beam mercilessly engulf the already damaged Starmie.
Groudon, the Seven Chieftains of the desert, the Exeggutor—they had all joined the fray!
Only now did Kuisqi realize with despair that his true enemy was far more than just Arthur! The backlash from plotting against Groudon had finally erupted in full force!
To fight Groudon in the desert was to make an enemy of the entire desert ecosystem!
Looking around, Kuisqi saw enemies everywhere! Every single one of his Pokémon was locked in a desperate struggle! No one was coming to save him...
Arthur, on the other hand, seemed to have the world itself on his side, his pursuit becoming more and more relentless!
Kuisqi's distress signal had been sent, but he had vastly overestimated how long he could last. Since the battle began, he hadn't even lasted two minutes...
As he scrambled to his feet after rolling away, Arthur caught up and delivered a straight kick to his chest, knocking him back down. Then, Arthur stepped forward and planted a foot on his chest.
Kuisqi's vision went black again. The pain of his severed arm and the repeated blows to his chest stripped away the last of his dignity. In his final moments, he tried to glare at Arthur, to let out a defiant roar to express his unwillingness and pride.
He was a Champion!! His end should have been spectacular!
But the pain and suffocation left him weeping uncontrollably, and the only thing that came up his throat was a mouthful of blood.
"Guh-hack!!"
In the end, all he managed was a short, hoarse, meaningless sound.
Arthur had no interest in listening to a dying man's last words. From beginning to end, his face remained mask-like in its cold indifference. Dominant, ruthless, decisive! His battles had always been this pure, this sharp!
With a thrust of his sword, Arthur cleanly pierced Kuisqi's throat.
No dialogue. No surrender accepted.
Arthur hadn't risked his life and the lives of all his Pokémon to stall for an hour just to listen to someone preach about righteousness or babble nonsense.
As he withdrew his sword, Arthur's face showed neither joy nor sorrow. Killing a current Sinnoh Champion might be something others would brag about for a lifetime, but to Arthur, it was just standard procedure.
He was even a little unsatisfied. This Champion's psychic emotional control technique was unique and ahead of its time, but it was a pity his combat skills were garbage.
Of course, only he would dare say such a thing. In reality, Kuisqi, with multiple Champion-level Pokémon and a host of peak captain-level aces, was undoubtedly one of the top trainers in the world on paper!
But that "top tier" was limited to the current era. Unfortunately for him, the opponent he faced was a legend from another, more brilliant age!
In this duel between new and old Champions, spanning over two hundred years—
Arthur wins!
