"We were not in that localized space for more than thirty minutes," Ethan stated, his brow furrowing as he pulled his S.H.I.E.L.D.-issued smartphone from his pocket.
The moment the device reconnected to the global satellite network outside the mirror dimension's interference, a cascade of delayed notifications flooded the screen. Ethan checked the digital clock and sighed heavily.
An entire day had passed in the outside world.
"The flow of time within a constructed mirror space is entirely relative to its creator's energy output," Luna explained calmly, her eyes tracking the winged demons circling the cavern ceiling.
"Because the temporal vectors are intentionally slowed down, a mere fragmented ray of Jehovah's consciousness can comfortably exist in that pocket dimension for thousands of years without fully dissipating."
"Well, that temporal discrepancy certainly explains why Roarke's demonic hit squad managed to catch up to us so quickly," Ethan muttered, pocketing his phone and rolling his shoulders.
"Fortunately, we do not seem to have missed the main event. Let's clear a path and locate Coulson and the rest of the team."
Without waiting for a response, Ethan raised his hand.
By manipulating the kinetic vectors of the surrounding air molecules, he drastically increased their friction coefficient. The localized air compressed and superheated in a fraction of a second, igniting into a massive, blinding sphere of ionized plasma.
With a flick of his wrist, Ethan directed the forward velocity vector of the plasma sphere, sending it tearing through the cavern.
The superheated projectile instantly incinerated the vanguard of charging demons, reducing them to floating ash before they could even scream.
Ethan and Luna moved methodically through the winding stone corridors, systematically eliminating the scattered demonic forces along the way.
Just as Ethan was calculating the most efficient route to rendezvous with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, a heavy stone door embedded in the cavern wall suddenly groaned and swung open on its own accord.
A figure stumbled out of the shadowy room, breathing heavily.
It was Johnny Blaze, the stunt rider who had blindly followed Father Moreau into the depths of the monastery to finally lift the curse of the Ghost Rider.
At this moment, Johnny collapsed to his knees on the cold stone floor. His face was a picture of absolute, unadulterated shock and overwhelming joy. He frantically ran his trembling hands over his leather jacket, feeling his chest, feeling the steady, normal rhythm of a human heartbeat.
He closed his eyes and reached inward, desperately searching for the burning sulfur, the whispering madness, and the uncontrollable hellfire that had plagued his existence for years.
It was gone. The parasitic soul of the Spirit of Vengeance had vanished completely. He had genuinely been reverted back into an ordinary, mortal human being.
"It actually worked. The ritual was successful! I am finally free!" Johnny shouted at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing down the dark corridor. He was so ecstatic that he desperately wanted to grab someone, anyone, and share the profound weight lifting off his shoulders.
However, his joyous shouts had unintended consequences. The loud echoes attracted unwanted attention, and three grotesque, winged demons immediately crawled out from the adjacent intersecting corridor, their red eyes locking onto the kneeling man.
Johnny's triumphant smile collapsed instantly, replaced by a pale mask of stark terror. "Uh, hey guys. I wasn't exactly calling for you, so could you maybe just turn around and go back?"
He scrambled backward, a cold realization washing over him. Who could possibly explain to him why a supposedly impenetrable holy sanctuary was currently crawling with hellspawn?
More importantly, he was now just a regular guy in a leather jacket. He no longer had indestructible bones or hellfire chains to defend himself. He was completely powerless to stop the devil's claws from tearing him apart.
The demons shrieked and lunged forward, their talons extended.
Just before the fatal strike landed, a compressed sphere of vector-manipulated plasma slammed into the demons' center of mass, violently vaporizing them against the far wall. Ethan stepped out of the shadows, his hand still raised, smoking slightly from the displaced thermal energy.
"Don't even bother asking me what the hell is going on here, because I honestly have no idea yet," Ethan said, completely cutting off Johnny before the bewildered stuntman could even open his mouth to form a question. "So, let's keep moving and ask someone who actually knows."
After navigating the labyrinth for another five tense minutes, the trio finally arrived at the central courtyard of the ancient holy site.
The situation they walked into was a high-tension Mexican standoff. The cavernous room was strictly divided into three heavily armed factions. On one side stood the surviving demonic forces.
On the other stood the tattooed ascetic monks, their weapons drawn. In the middle stood Phil Coulson, Melinda May, Nadya, and, surprisingly, Father Moreau, who had explicitly chosen to align himself with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents rather than his monastic brethren.
Although Coulson's team and the ascetic monks were technically cooperating to hold the defensive line against the encroaching demons, it was painfully obvious that the two human factions were incredibly wary of one another, constantly exchanging suspicious glares.
"Ethan! Where have you two been?" Coulson shouted over the din of battle, his eyes lighting up with immense relief as he spotted Ethan and Luna entering the fray. Naturally, his relief was heavily laced with professional frustration. "We have been desperately looking for you for an entire day!"
"My apologies, Coulson. We had to take care of a minor cosmic errand, but I assure you, it is entirely finished now," Ethan offered a quick, unapologetic smile.
He then turned his sharp gaze toward the remaining swarm of demons pressing in on the S.H.I.E.L.D. position. Ethan didn't bother drawing a weapon; he simply raised both of his hands toward the high, vaulted ceiling of the cavern.
A sudden, incredibly violent gale-force wind erupted within the enclosed space. Ethan was manipulating the atmospheric pressure gradients on a massive scale.
Under the precise, flawless control of his vector manipulation, the ambient moisture in the cavern's air began to rapidly gather and condense, forming a localized, thick layer of dark storm clouds right beneath the rocky ceiling.
By actively increasing the friction between the manipulated air currents, Ethan artificially brewed a massive electrostatic charge within the condensed clouds.
Brilliant, crackling bolts of blue lightning illuminated the dark cavern. With a sharp downward motion of his hands, Ethan created conductive pathways through the air resistance, guiding the kinetic and electrical vectors directly downward.
CRACK!
A devastating barrage of lightning bolts poured from the artificial storm, striking the demonic horde with pinpoint, surgical precision.
The demons screamed in agony as the millions of volts surged through their unholy bodies, reducing them to scorched husks. For a Level 5 Meta like Ethan, who had mastered the manipulation of electromagnetic forces and kinetic vectors, summoning and directing a localized lightning storm was now as effortless as waving his own arms.
Watching the terrifying, overwhelming scene where the demonic threat was systematically and entirely wiped out in mere seconds, Coulson finally let out a long, heavy sigh of relief.
He lowered his weapon and cautiously led May, Nadya, and Moreau over to Ethan's position.
Conversely, the tattooed ascetic monks did not relax. Instead, they gripped their silver weapons tighter, their expressions turning even more fanatically vigilant as they deliberately pulled away, putting a considerable, safe distance between themselves and Ethan's terrifying display of power.
"Alright, someone talk to me. What exactly is the situation here?" Ethan asked, looking back and forth between Coulson's exhausted team and the highly defensive ascetic monks. "Weren't you all supposedly on the same side an hour ago?"
"It is exactly as it looks. They blatantly lied to us," Father Moreau spoke up first, his voice trembling with a mixture of profound grief and intense anger. He fiercely gritted his teeth, visibly the most emotionally compromised person in the room.
Among everyone present, Moreau was undoubtedly the one who had placed the most blind faith in these ascetic brothers. He had personally assured S.H.I.E.L.D., Johnny, and Nadya that this hidden monastery was an absolute safe haven. To have that trust violently betrayed was devastating. "The method they promised to use to 'save' the child... was to murder him in cold blood."
"It is the only righteous, unequivocally correct path to salvation," the leader of the ascetic monks countered, stepping forward with an unwavering, terrifyingly calm expression. "As long as the corrupt, demonic blood of Roarke flows through that boy's veins, he will remain an apocalyptic hidden danger to humanity. Even if Roarke is defeated today, the boy's inherent power will inevitably be exploited by other lords of Hell in the future. Therefore, the most logically sound and correct method to permanently defend this world is to eliminate the vessel now."
"Just because this innocent child was unfortunately born with demon's blood in his biology, your immediate solution is to coldly sacrifice his life? To brutally murder a child just to satisfy your twisted, fanatical sense of absolute righteousness?" Coulson argued back, his voice thick with uncharacteristic fury.
What the monks had attempted to do unequivocally violated every single moral and ethical bottom line the veteran S.H.I.E.L.D. agent held dear. "Why would you even consider doing this, and what possible moral authority gives you the right to make that call?"
"You are entirely correct, Agent Coulson. I am fundamentally not qualified to make this judgment. In fact, no mortal man is qualified to do this except God Almighty," the ascetic leader replied, his heavily tattooed face completely devoid of any remorse or doubt.
"That is precisely why I fully planned to personally execute the child, and then immediately commit suicide by my own blade. I am more than willing to damn my own soul and bear the eternal sins of murder, so long as the Earth remains safe from the Devil."
Hearing this chillingly calm declaration, Coulson, who had been fully prepared to argue logic and international law, felt his words completely freeze in his throat.
This was the incredibly dangerous, completely intractable problem when dealing with true religious fanatics. No matter how insane or horrific their actions appeared to rational outsiders, these zealots possessed a terrifying internal logic.
They rigidly adhered to their own twisted version of justice, fully prepared to sacrifice themselves and endure eternal hellfire just to physically practice their beliefs.
You simply could not reason with someone who was already willing to die for their sins.
"Fascinating philosophical debate, really. But it begs a much more pressing logistical question," Ethan interrupted, his eyes scanning the cavern, analyzing the heat signatures of everyone present. He frowned. "Where exactly is Danny right now?"
The silence that followed was heavy and bitter.
"When we realized what the monks were planning, we drew our weapons to protect the boy," Coulson explained, staring at the ground, his voice heavy with professional failure and regret. "While we were actively fighting the monks, Roarke's demonic vanguard breached the perimeter. In the ensuing chaos and crossfire, a demon managed to slip past our defensive line. They took the child, Ethan. We failed to stop them."
"And if it had not been for your secular, misguided obstruction, we would have successfully eliminated the threat, and the Devil would have gained nothing today. This entire tragedy is the result of your worldly stupidity," the leader of the ascetic monks stated with bitter unwillingness.
"Enough!" Ethan snapped, his voice echoing with enough atmospheric pressure to rattle the stones. He had zero patience for this self-righteous bickering. "The kid is gone, which means your twisted moral debate is officially irrelevant. Roarke has his vessel. Now we need to think about how to tactically and physically prevent him from successfully completing his possession ritual."
Ethan turned to the monk. "You seem to know your demonology. Do you know where Roarke will perform the ceremony?"
"We know exactly where the Devil is heading," the ascetic leader admitted reluctantly. "Roarke must currently be traveling to the ancient ruins of Uzak Getan. It is geographically the absolute closest dimensional weak point between the legendary realms of Hell and the human world."
"In other words, it is a primary spatial nexus node between Earth and the Hell dimension," Ethan translated the mystical jargon into scientific terms, turning his attention back to Coulson. "So, where exactly is this awkwardly named location?"
"It is located in central Turkey. In modern geography, the region is referred to as Uşak, specifically near the ancient ruins of Göbekli Tepe," Coulson confirmed, immediately pulling out a high-tech S.H.I.E.L.D. data pad and projecting a highly detailed, glowing holographic map of Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
"Does the modern name really matter if the coordinates are the same?" Ethan asked, spreading his hands practically. "I have the vector coordinates locked in. Let's get to the Quinjet and intercept them immediately."
However, just as the team turned to rapidly mobilize and board the waiting Quinjet fighter, Ethan suddenly stepped directly into Johnny Blaze's path, physically blocking the former stuntman from proceeding.
"Hold on a second, Johnny," Ethan said, his tone serious and pragmatic. "You are officially a completely ordinary, mortal human being now. Your bones can break, your skin can burn, and you don't have a healing factor. Are you absolutely sure you still want to play the hero today? When we engage a literal Lord of Hell and his army, I cannot absolutely guarantee that we will have the spare bandwidth to babysit you."
"I'm sorry, Ethan, but I have to go," Johnny replied, his voice lacking its previous demonic resonance, but carrying a heavy, undeniable weight of human determination.
He looked Ethan dead in the eye. "I was the one who found that child. He looked at me, and he trusted me completely to protect him. And what did I do? I dragged him straight into this death trap just because I selfishly wanted to lift my own personal curse. If I walk away now, if I don't risk my life to fix my mistake... then what is the actual difference between me and the devils we're fighting?"
"Johnny, it's a simple matter of combat logistics—" Ethan began to argue, preparing to forcibly bench the man for his own safety.
"Let him follow along," Luna suddenly interrupted. Her voice was quiet, but it carried an unquestionable authority that was rarely heard when she was dealing with ordinary humans.
Ethan blinked, genuinely surprised by the intervention. Why would Luna, an ancient Atlantean princess who typically viewed human struggles with cold, calculated indifference, actively speak up to bring a completely powerless, vulnerable man into a highly dangerous warzone?
Ethan turned to look at her, and his eyes immediately dropped to the heavy, glowing original Bible tucked securely under Luna's arm.
Suddenly, the complex cosmic equations clicked into place in his mind. He recalled the incredibly cryptic prophecy that the golden avatar of Jehovah had mentioned just before the mirror dimension collapsed.
Someone will do me a big favor.
Understanding the hidden, overarching narrative at play, Ethan sighed and finally stepped aside, acquiescing to the strange cosmic flow of events. "Fine. Get on the jet, Johnny. Try not to die."
