Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The First King

"The story of *K* begins with something called the Dresden Slate."

"The Dresden Slate selects superpowered individuals—or even ordinary humans—and grants them the authority to summon the Sword of Damocles, becoming a King."

Once chosen, a King's physical and mental capabilities are vastly enhanced, far beyond those of ordinary humans.

"There are seven Kings in total: the Silver King, Gold King, Red King, Blue King, Green King, Gray King, and the Colorless King."

"Yashiro Isana is the First King—The Silver King."

"Each King possesses different attributes: the immortal Silver, the fateful Gold, the violent Red, the orderly Blue, the revolutionary Green, the protective Gray..."

"And the most mysterious—Colorless. Due to its undefined nature, the Colorless King's abilities vary."

Bai Luo said, "This generation's Colorless King can separate his consciousness from his body and possess others."

Misaka Mikoto: "That's such a creepy ability."

Kurumi Tokisaki: "It sounds disgusting... taking over someone's body?"

Bai Luo thought, *You're the last person who should say that.* Who knew how many versions of herself Kurumi had hidden in shadows?

Kamado Tanjiro: "Yeah, it feels really evil."

In the group, Tanjiro and Yashiro were pure-hearted kids. Mikoto, though tsundere, was kind at heart. Even Kurumi, despite her villainous role, disliked the idea of body possession.

Bai Luo: "I don't recall the Colorless King's real name being mentioned in the anime."

"But not long ago, he succeeded in tricking the Silver King and switched bodies with him."

"That's what happened before you lost your memory, Yashiro."

The group understood now—Yashiro lost his memory due to a body switch.

Yashiro: "So that's what happened? I really went through something like that..."

Mikoto: "Poor Yashiro. (Pat head emoji)"

Kurumi: "Poor Yashiro. (Pat head emoji)"

Tanjiro: "Poor Yashiro. (Pat head emoji)"

*At this point in the story, Yashiro probably hasn't met Neko yet,* Bai Luo thought. *Should I find a chance to snatch her away?*

Neko is a psychic outsider in the *K* universe—someone born with power, unlike the clansmen granted power by Kings.

Her ability allows her to alter perception and memories within a certain range—creating hallucinations and even rewriting memory.

Also, she fits Bai Luo's fluffy-animal-girl preferences. Who wouldn't like a cute, cat-like girl?

"Do you need help?" Bai Luo offered. "I can't do much for Tanjiro right now, but Yashiro, I might be able to help."

Yashiro: "Really? Then I'd be grateful—"

"Hey!" Mikoto interrupted. "You know everything about us, but we know nothing about you. Isn't that unfair?"

Kurumi: "Yes, don't think you can gloss over things, Mr. Bai Luo."

They were warning Yashiro not to trust strangers too easily.

Bai Luo realized he had been a bit too proactive.

"Haha, sorry. I got excited seeing characters I used to love from anime."

"Let me introduce myself. I'm Bai Luo, originally from China. I was transported into a light novel world called *The Eminence in Shadow*."

He kept the existence of his enhancement system a secret, but the rest was harmless.

"As for my world... well, it's chaotic."

"Chaotic?" Kurumi asked. "Is there a war going on?"

"No big wars. Just local conflicts. On the surface, it looks peaceful."

"What I mean by chaos is the underworld."

The world of *Shadow* had two layers. On the surface, things looked fine. But beneath, the Diablos Cult had infiltrated every corner of society.

They engaged in human trafficking, unethical experiments, mind control, and theft of power and wealth.

The Cult's dream world was a carefully constructed lie—most people didn't even realize they were pawns.

"I recently saved some beastkin from such a criminal organization."

Bai Luo sent photos to the group: "This is a destroyed village and the homeless children I rescued."

Kurumi: "So cute!!"

Kurumi, a cat lover, was nearly overwhelmed by the cuteness.

But realizing what happened to the children made her angry.

Kurumi: "Those bastards deserve to die!"

Mikoto: "That's awful. Those criminals are disgusting."

She mumbled, "Too bad there weren't any frog beastkin..."

Bai Luo: "There are no frog beastkin in this world."

Mikoto: "How do you know what I was thinking?! Mind reading?! Networked telepathy?!"

Kurumi: "What's happening?"

She caught on. "He guessed your thoughts? Frog beastkin? Ew."

Mikoto: "Hey! Guts is cute!!"

Kurumi: "Guts? You named a frog?"

Kurumi shivered in real life, questioning Mikoto's taste.

Mikoto: "Pictures! Look at this! Isn't Guts adorable?!"

Kurumi: "...That's so... abstract."

Kurumi was baffled but deeply shocked.

Bai Luo: "Cough. Guts is... very cute."

Mikoto: "I'm sorry for before. You're a good person."

Anyone who likes Guts can't be bad.

Bai Luo: "Uh... thanks."

Tanjiro: "I think so too. Brother Bai Luo is definitely a good person."

Yashiro: "Need any help?"

Bai Luo: "You're offering help in your current state?"

Yashiro: "Haha, it just slipped out."

Bai Luo: "I appreciate it. Fortunately, I don't have too many kids to care for. But if you can get some supplies, that would be great. I'll pay, of course."

Yashiro: "Okay, I'll think of something."

Thanks to Bai Luo's advice, Yashiro had started to sense his dormant power.

Suddenly, a soft white light enveloped him. He floated upward, passing through the ceiling and vanishing into the sky.

Unnoticed, a small white cat in the corner tilted its head, puzzled.

"Meow?"

*What was that thing?*

*How did it just whoosh away?*

Unable to grasp it, the cat hopped into the shadows.

Mikoto: "If your world's that dangerous, and you're looking after kids—isn't it too much?"

Bai Luo: "Don't worry. I can handle myself. I even drove off this world's protagonist earlier."

He posted a photo of the crater left after his battle with Shadow.

Mikoto: "WHAT?! Is that a crater?!"

Kurumi: "That's insane!"

In *Date A Live*, spatial quakes could be even more destructive—but only top-tier Spirits like Mio could do that.

Most other Spirits couldn't control such power. Kurumi, for instance, could trigger a 5km-wide quake, but she couldn't control it.

Bai Luo surviving such devastation implied he could withstand even greater destruction.

Kurumi thought: *Even if I go back 30 years, can I really kill the First Spirit with my power?*

Her inaction was partly due to doubt.

But now...

Kurumi: *If what he says is true, and he helps me... we might actually succeed!*

She resolved to befriend Bai Luo.

Yashiro finally noticed the crater photo and was stunned.

Weismann: "With power like that, Bai Luo could destroy a nation with ease."

Bai Luo: "You called yourself Weismann. Memory returning?"

Weismann: "Just fragments. I can use some of my powers."

Bai Luo: "Congrats."

Group:

Kurumi: "Congrats +1."

Mikoto: "Congrats +2."

Tanjiro: "Congrats +3."

Weismann stood atop a skyscraper, gazing at the city—unsure of where to go.

Because of Bai Luo's interference, Neko hadn't altered his memory to place him on Academy Island. The story of *K* had changed.

Bai Luo: "Are you going for revenge now?"

Weismann: "Yes. That guy can't be allowed to continue."

The Colorless King had stolen his body and was aboard the airship.

As the Silver King, Weismann had to stop him.

Bai Luo: "Need help?"

Mikoto: "I'm in."

Kurumi: "Me too."

Even Tanjiro joined: "If Mr. Weismann doesn't mind..."

Weismann felt touched. For the first time in decades, his heart warmed at the idea of being accepted.

Weismann: "Lieutenant... it seems I've found people who accept me again."
