Chapter 143 - Chapter 143: Small-Scale Mutant Animals

"Maintain suppressive fire! Machine gunners, focus! A mutant bison is charging from the front!"

The bellow echoed across the battlefield. A monstrous bison—six meters tall with horns like steel drills—barreled forward at terrifying speed, its momentum rivaling a full-throttle tank. Rifle rounds pinged harmlessly off its hide.

"Move! Everyone, get out of the way!"

The front-line unit scrambled. They had maintained a 300-meter distance, but the bison's velocity left no room to dodge. Death was only seconds away.

Then—bam! A slab of rock burst from the ground beneath the bison's hooves.

The beast tripped mid-charge and crashed down hard, earth trembling beneath its massive weight.

"Thanks for the save, Brother Xiuyu!" Lei Gang wiped the sweat from his brow. Had Su Xiuyu not acted, the entire squad would've been flattened.

Moments later, several stone spikes erupted beneath the bison's belly, skewering its abdomen and severing its spine. The beast twitched violently, paralyzed.

But there was no time to celebrate.

Another wave of mutant animals surged across the horizon—over a hundred strong. Antelopes, wild horses, and other once-normal beasts, now twisted into charging death machines.

"Open fire! Fire at will!"

The tank stationed behind the guard team finally roared to life. A dozen shells blasted through the enemy ranks, sending bodies flying and reducing dozens of mutants to pulp. Survivors scattered in all directions, retreating into the wilderness.

Yet no one cheered. These encounters had become routine—daily skirmishes against nature's warped revenge. The real danger lay further ahead.

Roughly a thousand meters away, shadowy figures shifted. The true beast tide—tens of thousands of mutant creatures—was gathering.

"Chief!"

"Chief!"

The guards saluted Lei Gang, the Special Service Bureau's commander and their direct superior. Yangcheng, classified as a second-tier city, had no formal garrison. The Bureau alone bore the burden of defense.

Thankfully, foresight had saved them. Years ago, Yangcheng stockpiled weapons, ammunition, and rations. As the crisis worsened, tanks and armored vehicles were added to the mix—even helicopters.

Only fighter jets remained absent. Not due to lack of funds, but pilots. Air combat had become suicide—mutant birds roamed the skies in swarms, making any sortie a one-way trip.

"Everyone, hold your positions," Lei Gang said firmly. "I'll stand with you. We protect Yangcheng together!"

He didn't believe in empty speeches. His loyalty was earned by action—by fighting beside his men, not from behind them.

"Captain, this isn't right," one soldier protested. "You're our commander! Give orders from the rear. You can't change the tide alone!"

But Su Xiuyu, standing nearby, smiled faintly. This was exactly why Lei Gang earned such respect. It was easy to talk about leadership. Living it? That was rare.

"Lei Gang, I'll be back in a bit," Su Xiuyu (his wooden clone) said nonchalantly. "This kind of skirmish is beneath me, but I'll send someone to help. After all, this is still my hometown."

Without hesitation, Su Xiuyu opened a dimensional rift and reached out—summoning help from another world.

Back in Konoha, he stood before the Uchiha compound.

"Fugaku! I need fifty chunin, five jonin, and ten Uzumaki experts proficient in sealing techniques. Also, notify Uchiha Shisui. He'll lead them. We move in ten minutes."

Though confused, Uchiha Fugaku didn't hesitate. Orders were orders.

Ten minutes later, Su Xiuyu addressed the assembled force.

"This is a cleanup mission in another world. The enemies are beasts—large, but not particularly dangerous if you stay alert. Shisui, you'll be in charge. Watch over everyone."

"Yes, Master Xiuyu!"

This time, Su Xiuyu made no attempt to hide his actions. He deliberately amplified the spatial disturbance, a silent announcement to Konoha's major clans: something big was coming. Forces would soon be crossing over—en masse.

"Let's go."

The squad stepped into the rift and vanished.

Back in Yangcheng, the sky split open with a rumble. The guards panicked.

"Space crack detected!"

Ever since dimensional fractures started occurring, sudden rifts meant danger.

"Don't fire! Hold your fire!" Lei Gang shouted. "It's Brother Xiuyu!"

As Su Xiuyu emerged from the rift—along with a battalion of ninja—the stunned soldiers lowered their weapons.

"Lei Gang, no need to be stingy with the shells. Blast the area clean. I've brought help."

Dozens of shinobi poured from the portal. The sight of men appearing through a dimensional rift left the gate guards speechless.

"Did we just witness a god-tier transfer technique…?"

Some whispered in awe. Others stood frozen. They weren't far off. Su Xiuyu was a big shot—and Yangcheng had just become the center of something far greater.

"This is Uchiha Shisui, their captain. Uzumaki, set up sealing barriers. Lei Gang, find someone familiar with the city walls. Everyone else—prepare for reinforcements."

"After the tank barrage ends," Xiuyu continued, "Shisui's squad will clean up. They'll take point. Support them."

"Yes, Master Xiuyu."

Orders flew.

Lei Gang rallied the South Gate team, who launched a relentless bombardment. The moment efficiency outweighed ammunition conservation, modern weapons became devastating.

The battlefield exploded with fire and steel. Mutant bodies were torn apart. In just one hour, every shell was spent—ordinance meant to last an entire day.

Su Xiuyu turned to Shisui. "Did you see that? That's modern firepower. Even if you're a jonin, a direct tank hit means death. Unless you have Earth Release or Instant Movement, you won't make it."

Shisui nodded grimly.

"These are the kinds of threats you'll face in the modern world. Treat this as training. Learn it well. This is the battlefield of the future."

----------------------

Uchiha Shisui stood tall, calmly absorbing Su Xiuyu's words. Though this world was vastly different from Konoha—its strange architecture, unfamiliar uniforms, and futuristic structures felt like an alien planet—Shisui remained composed.

But then again, this was Shisui of the Body Flicker. A veteran of great wars, a man who earned his name through blood and flame. He had seen enough chaos to stay grounded in any battlefield.

"Uchiha Youta, you'll lead the First Unit. Four chunin and six genin will be assigned under your command. Uchiha Takuma, take charge of the Second Unit. Same composition. Organize your squads now."

"The sealing team will hold position on the wall," Shisui continued. "I'll manage overall coordination and intervene directly if anything unexpected arises."

With efficiency born from experience, Shisui issued orders, then approached Lei Gang to finalize positioning.

"My forces will handle the eastern front. You cover the west. Make sure your artillery avoids our side—we'll keep in touch."

Though it was Lei Gang's first time meeting Shisui, the Uchiha's presence and confidence were enough. They might look like they'd walked out of a history book with their robes and ninja gear, but their strength was unmistakable.

"Understood. If things get overwhelming, pull back immediately. Our artillery teams are resupplying now," Lei Gang replied. He was genuinely thankful. The support was unexpected but desperately needed.

Yangcheng had awakened individuals with powers, but their numbers—and combat capability—couldn't compare to the sheer aggression of mutant beasts. Few were willing to stand on the front lines. That was what made Lei Gang feel so short-handed.

With their roles defined, Lei Gang turned back to directing his troops, ordering sporadic strikes on mutant groups in the west. Tanks only fired when larger clusters of beasts appeared.

But even as he oversaw his own forces, Lei Gang kept one eye on the newcomers—on Su Xiuyu's army.

The five Uchiha teams quickly moved out. The distant tide of mutant beasts loomed like a living storm. Their numbers and size were nothing short of monstrous.

Suddenly, Su Xiuyu (wooden clone) stomped his foot. "Earth Release: Earth Flowing Wall!"

With a deep rumble, a massive earth wall rose—stretching nearly a thousand meters across the terrain.

It was a staggering sight.

The Uchiha didn't flinch. Those familiar with their patriarch knew what this meant—Su Xiuyu's power was beyond comparison. A single stomp from him had shaped the battlefield.

"Brother Xiuyu… was that you?" Lei Gang asked, still stunned.

"Yep," Su Xiuyu answered casually. "Surprised? You shouldn't be. You call me 'Brother,' but I'm stronger than you think. Yangcheng's my home—I'm not letting anything happen here."

He clapped Lei Gang on the shoulder with a grin.

On the wall, Uchiha squads were already scaling its sides using chakra to grip the surface. Once at the top, they flung dozens of kunai and shuriken, each one tagged with explosive talismans.

A moment later, a series of rapid-fire explosions erupted in the horde of beasts—flashes of flame and flying limbs filled the battlefield.

"What kind of weapons are those?" Lei Gang asked, adjusting his binoculars. "They're throwing knives—but they explode?"

"Detonating tags," Xiuyu replied, pulling one from his pouch. The tag shimmered faintly with chakra runes, a large kanji for Explosion at the center.

"Wait—this thin paper can do all that?"

"Yeah. Simple but deadly. Light, easy to carry, and with enough of them, very effective."

Lei Gang couldn't help but ask, "Would you consider… selling these? We'd pay."

Xiuyu smirked. "I would—but here's the problem. You can't use them."

"What do you mean?"

"They require chakra to activate," Xiuyu explained. "These tags are powered by Fire Release sealed into the paper. Without chakra control, they're just paper."

Lei Gang's hopeful expression dimmed. "So… they need a special ability?"

"Exactly. But don't worry. I'll talk to some people and work on modifying the detonation method. It won't be quick, but maybe two months of research should get us somewhere."

He already had a plan. Orochimaru was still rotting in Konoha's prison, and this felt like the perfect time to make use of that genius. Combine Orochimaru's intellect with the Uzumaki's sealing knowledge and Uchiha's Fire Release… they might just pull it off.

"And once it's ready," Lei Gang asked, "you'll let me know?"

"Of course," Xiuyu said. "But keep in mind—these won't come cheap. Way more expensive than grenades. They can't be mass-produced like factory munitions. Every tag requires manual preparation."

Lei Gang sighed. "So the cost-effectiveness is… limited."

"Right. But think of this—your grenades weigh half a kilo each. You carry twenty, and you're already dragging a load. Detonating tags? Less than ten grams. You can carry hundreds, throw them farther, and they pack a punch."

Indeed, once thrown, the tags exploded in blazing succession. After the initial barrage, the Uchiha launched a second wave. Shuriken and kunai whirled through the air, detonations ripping through the beast horde.

This was real battlefield combat—not flashy, one-on-one duels. Even powerful ninjas didn't just charge in swinging. That was a myth. Only a few like Madara or Hashirama could afford that.

Against beasts, especially mutated ones, strategy came first. Though their intelligence had increased, they were still animals—primitive in instinct.

After several coordinated volleys of explosive tags, the monsters began to scatter. Even stupidity had limits. They realized too many of them were dying when clumped together.
