Chapter 47 - Dragon Leveling Chapter 46 Return to the Demon Castle

"Nope. Absolutely not?!"

"Thanks, Aphrodite! I really… wait, what?"

"Just kidding, I'm only messing with you."

"O-Oh, okay."

Issei replied with a low, somewhat awkward laugh, as Aphrodite had gotten him worried there for a second after he had asked her if she could cover for him and his upcoming absence as he went back to the Demon's Castle.

It had been a week since Ragnarok, and life had returned to normal for him and his friends. Issei had been kept busy with his usual school schedule, his occasional devil duties, and his work as an S-rank Hero with the Hero Faction. Under normal circumstances, he wouldn't have had a single free day, let alone enough time to clear the Demon's Castle. It was obvious that reaching the next major floor would take far longer than the small number of five days it had taken him and Ingvild to push from the first floor to the fiftieth, even with how much he had grown since then.

That was why the storm heading toward his town worked in his favor. School was closing for safety reasons, so he only had his duties as a devil and a hero to worry about, though Aphrodite could easily cover it because she was his patron. More or less, it left him with a rare week of actual free time, and he didn't want to waste it.

"Okay, here you go." Aphrodite said as she handed back the truck driver his digital clipboard and the pen she had used to sign the displayed paper. The driver gave a brief nod and walked back to his truck, lifting an arm to signal his crew, and the workers immediately started transferring the items Aphrodite had recently bought into her mansion.

"Hey, be careful with that!"

Aphrodite called out when two crew members nearly tilted a heavy statue off its support as they eased it out of the truck, the thing wobbling dangerously for a moment before the two men managed to steady it. Not that Issei could blame them for the slip up, not with Aphrodite standing near and being the distraction that she was for them.

"Here, let my guys help with that." Issei said, before a group of Orc Shadow Soldiers emerged behind him. At once, they moved forward and took over the operation, with two of them walking ahead, making the human workers back away as they picked up the statue as if it weighed nothing before carrying it into the mansion with slow, steady steps.

"Huh. Maybe I should've asked you to help from the start." Aphrodite said with a small shrug before walking back inside with Issei following her, taking her seat on the couch with one leg crossing over the other. "So, color me interested, but where are you going this time? Back to the Labyrinth, I assume?"

"I intend to make it one of my destinations. I beat the Minotaur but there are still a lot of monsters down there." Issei answered as he sat down on the sofa across from her. Technically, he was telling the truth, since the Labyrinth had become the basement level of the Demon's Castle, him heading back there would mean he was returning to the same location, all things considered.

"You know, you're the first man I've met in three thousand years who willingly goes back there a second time, even if you have the means to traverse it safely." Aphrodite said, sounding more amused than anything else. "I assume that you also want me to send words to Cid and let him know that you won't be available to accept missions."

"Yeah, I do."

"Hmmm, I'm sure Hephaestus and I can work out something to cover for you just like last time. I can be convincing, but no one'll believe it if I tell them you're just following me around." Aphrodite said while tapping her chin with a thoughtful expression, which then relaxed into a smile as she leaned sideways on her couch and turned her eyes back to him "I guess we can add one more time you owe me. How many favors is that now?"

"Quite… a few." Issei said, chuckling nervously while scratching the back of his head. "I'll pay you back, I promise."

"Oh, you better." Aphrodite winked with a playful smile, making Issei chuckle before she continued "So, when will you be leaving?"

"I'll leave later this afternoon."

"Oh, that soon?" Aphrodite asked, arching an eyebrow in surprise before pushing herself up from the couch "In that case, I better go prepare something for you to bring along on your trip. Wait here."

"Aphrodite, you really don't have to…"

"Are you refusing the generosity of a Goddess, boy?" She cut him off, shooting him a light glare with her hands on her hips.

Chuckling a little, Issei raised both hands in mock surrender. "No. Of course not, ma'am."

"Good. You'll need something decent in your stomach when you head back into that place." Her glare softened into a satisfied smile before turning toward the kitchen with an easy sway in her step, her voice calling back to him before she disappeared behind the closed door. "And don't even think about sneaking out before I'm done."

With that, Issei turned back and reached for a teacup sitting on the table, carefully pouring the steaming tea into it. Cradling the cup in his hands, he sank into the sofa and let his eyes follow the sunlight streaming through the windows.

For some reason, he had a strange feeling it might be a while before he got to see this view again.

"Alright, I'm heading out."

Issei announced, grabbing his backpack and flinging it over one shoulder.

"Going already? You barely got back from Olympus." Rias crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow as she looked at her boyfriend as she stood with Issei in the living room of Hyoudou Residence, having gathered there with the rest of the house to see him off. The others watched with curiosity, though none of them could hide their disappointment at not being able to spend the whole week at home with him.

Outside, rain pounded against the windows as the storm moved in on the town. Water ran in rivulets down the glass, and the low rumble of thunder could be heard in the distance.

"Yeah, we leave later tonight, so I better get there and help with the preparation." Issei nodded, smiling at his crimson haired girlfriend as he continued "Don't worry. I'll be back before you guys know it."

"Don't push yourself too hard, okay, Ise?" Ingvild said, standing up from her seat to give him a hug after he had kissed Rias. She was the only one who knew where he was actually going, while the others all assumed that he was escorting Aphrodite on her trip to Egypt.

Grinning, Issei put his hand on her back and embraced her briefly, giving her a reassuring smile once she had pulled back from him "I'll be careful. You don't have to worry about anything, Ingvild."

"Take care of yourself, Issei-kun." Akeno said as she also moved over to Issei and gave him a hug, one that Issei returned without hesitation. Her long hair brushed lightly across his shoulder before she stepped back with her usual warm smile, which had returned ever since her problem with her father had been settled. Issei had even heard she'd been sending him bento boxes every few days, and it honestly made him happy to see her in such a good place again.

"Please come home safely, Issei-san."

"We'll pray for your safe return!"

"Guys, I'm just going on a trip," Issei said, staring at the church trio with a flat look, but still let out a small chuckle at how dramatic they were being.

If they had known where he was really going, their reaction wouldn't have been exaggerated at all.

"Alright. I better go now." After bidding his goodbye to Koneko and Ravel, as well as Rossweisse, who had moved into his home to live with them and save rent money after accepting Rias' offer to become the second Rook of her Peerage, Issie activated Shadow Exchange, causing a wave of darkness to erupt from his shadow and wrap around him. "See you guys in a week."

With that said, Issei disappeared, and the shadow he had switched places with appeared in his spot. It was the same one he left in the Demon's Castle when he left it last time with Ingvild, and the poor soldier, who had been stuck alone in that dungeon for weeks, threw his arms up in excitement the moment he realized he was finally being used again. However, his celebration was short-lived, and he froze when he noticed everyone staring at him, making him lower his hand down to wave awkwardly at them.

"Well, I guess it'll be just us girls here then," Akeno said before glancing toward the window. "The storm's getting worse. I should go up to the roof and bring the plants inside."

"I'll help you, Akeno," Rias said before turning to Ingvild. "Ingvild, do you want to…"

But the question never made it out fully, because the entire room fell silent when they all noticed Ingvild lying on the couch with one arm hanging off the side and a few strands of her lavender hair draping over her face.

At the same time, Issei emerged in the fiftieth floor of the Demon's Castle. The moment he materialized, the familiar heat, and the scent of smoke and scorched stone, of the burning city that made the environment of the floor hit him, just like when he'd last left it. The corpse of the Necromancer Metus lay exactly where he had dropped it, slumped against the broken rubble of its throne. There was no demon in sight, nor any sign that the ones above had come down to reclaim the area, leaving only the pillar of light that would lead him to the next floor pulsing steadily behind Metus' throne.

"We are back, Ddraig." Issei smiled, taking a deep breath as he felt excitement bubble in his chest.

This was it.

"Ah, here we go." Issei chuckled as he turned his attention down to look at the Notification Panel that had popped up before him.

[!] New Main Quest:

Collect Demon Souls (2)

The Demon King, Baran, resides on the top floor of the Demon's Castle. Defeat Baran and collect his soul.

[Completion Requirements] – Defeat the Demon King

[Rewards:

1. Class-specified Rune Stone.

2. 30 to all Attributes

3. Undisclosed Reward

"So I've only gotten one target now." Issei said, nodding to himself as he read his new quest. The rewards, however, were all better than the last time, especially that Rune Stone.

[Before we ascend to the next floor, how about you do some last minute check, partner?]

"Oh, you're right, Ddraig. We didn't have the chance to do it at all, did we?" Issei said, nodding his head along with his dragon partner before lowering himself down on knee.

Setting his backpack in front of him, Issei started surfing through the items that he had brought along for the trip, starting with the fresh sets of clothes, an extra pair of sport shoes, a magic bottle that had been filled with enough water to last him week, and the bento box, the same one as the last time, Aphrodite had made for him, with a total of fourteen meal portions inside. There was also a lucky charm he had bought with Asia at the new souvenir store that had recently opened for business near Kuoh Academy, a handheld gaming console borrowed from Gasper, and a dozen extra batteries for it. He had also brought along a compass, a pair of binoculars, an empty notebook, two pencils, an eraser and several other miscellaneous tools.

"Okay, we got half of what we'll need here." With that confirmation, Issei stored everything inside his backpack into his Inventory, where he began to surf through the more important items he had prepared for the journey. Obviously, just like last time, Issei had packed his own supplies for the journey. His weapons were there, just as they always were, though Issei also noticed that he had forgotten to give Ravel back the Phoenix Soul bow.

Since he never had much use for them, the fifteen Greater Healing Potions he had bought from the System Shop months ago were still there, though he'd probably have to replace them with the Mystical Healing Potions for their stronger recovery effects. The vials of antidotes, stat-boosting elixirs, and power-amplifying flasks were all still there, but it was the mana potions that demanded the most attention, as he would need them to constantly sustain his Shadow Army.

"Oh, speaking of…" Issei said, glancing over to the yard before him before calling out "You ten, come out here."

In an instant, his shadow expanded, and the ten commanders of his Shadow Army materialized in a kneeling formation before him. Gladio took the lead, hands gripping the hilt of his Demon Knight Greatblade, his posture was just like that of the honorable, but fearsome knight he was known to be. To his right, Asterius and Vulcan took their positions, their powerful frame radiating latent strength even while kneeling.

Tempest and Blade were on the right, the heaven wind knight holding his spear upright with a disciplined stance, while the ice elf assassin had both hands on the handle of his weapons with his ever sly smirk plastering across his face. Directly behind Gladio were Glacia and Kateara, their aura of magic clashing subtly as if to compete with each other, as they always did.

At the very back of the formation was Aegis, the weight of the Attractive shield that was held in his hand and his heavy armors seemed to act as the anchor for the other commanders, whose presences alone were enough to hint at the destruction that they could unleash on his command. Flanking him were the two beast leaders of his army, Lycaon and Tora, their streamlined forms coiled and ready.

"Since when did you guys learn how to do this?" Issei asked, feeling genuinely intrigued and impressed by the displaying formation and discipline, something that only Gladio, Tempest and Aegis were known for in his army. "No matter. Stay where you are. Lemme go over your levels really quick."

[Wooh, look at those levels…] Ddraig noted in impress.

"Yeah, our guys sure have leveled up a lot during Ragnarok, huh?" Issei remarked, feeling a sense of pride as he reviewed the numbers with Ddraig. A frown then crossed his face, however, when he noticed that the required experience to level up for his highest-ranking commanders had skyrocketed as well, though it wasn't anything that he hadn't expected.

With all the demons still waiting across the fifty floors ahead, Issei was confident that Asterius, Vulcan, and Tempest would have no trouble reaching the maximum levels needed to be promoted to Elite Knight. However, the top-tier commanders like Gladio, Blade, and Glacia would inevitably take much longer to gain further growth. And that didn't even take into account the Tower of Ascension challenges he had yet to complete, such as defeating Igris to unlock the General Rank for Gladio.

"Here, take these, Asterius."

Pulling up the System Shop and making the purchase, Issei handed Asterius two EXP stones, which the Minotaur accepted with an appreciated grunt. As he brought the stones to his chest, both items shattered and dissolved into glowing particles that circled around his form before being absorbed into his body. Within moments, the energy settled and Issei grinned when he saw that Asterius had jumped fifteen levels, putting his closer to Vulcan and Tempest while moving him closer to the rank promotion he would soon achieve.

"Alright, listen up." Issei's voice rang out, drawing the attention of all ten commanders as they shifted slightly, acknowledging his words. "Before we hit the next floor, I'm splitting you into five teams. Each team has two objectives: first, defeat every enemy you come across; and second, immediately report back to me if you locate the demons that carry the entry permit we need to advance."

"Gladio and Glacia, you two will lead the Shadow Troopers and Ice Elf Mages up North. You two will be team A." Issei then continued, bringing out his notebook to note down the strategies "Lycaon and Tora, you two will be team B. I'll have you two handle the southern region. Blade and Aegis, you two will be team C, take your troops East and deal with anything you guys encounter there. Asterius and Vulcan, you two will be team D. Head west and crush anything that stands in your way."

The two behemoth exchanged a fierce roar in unison before clasping hands in a brotherly handshake, sending a brief shockwave rippling across the yard. Issei gave a small chuckle at the two before looking at his last commanders, who were eagerly awaiting his instruction.

"Last but not least, Katerea and Tempest. You two will be team E. Since you both can fly, I want you to cover the sky. Along with your own troops, I'll also assign the shadow ants to your team." The two Shadows straightened themselves, acknowledging their orders.

"Make sure to bring back any loot you find as well, understood?" Issei asked, and the shadows responded by bowing their heads to him before raising to their feet, flanking Issei as he turned around and looked at the pillar of light connecting the ground they stood to the sky above. A spark of electricity flickered in his palm before the entry permit appeared, and Issei gave it a quick glance before saying "Let's go."

With that, Issei and his shadows walked into the pulsing pillar of light together, their silhouettes fading into the mass of energy before solidifying as they emerged on the 51st floor of the Demon's Castle. Another burning city stretched out before them, being swallowed in a sea of flames. The air was thick with smoke that rolled across the ruined skyline, while buildings leaned at crooked angles, some half-collapsed while others stood tall only to be gutted from the inside by fire.

"There they are." Issei said, as hordes of demons swarmed toward them from the streets ahead, spilling out from alleys, ruined storefronts, broken windows and rooftops. Some crawled along the walls like insects. Others leapt across gaps between burning structures. Their combined growls formed a chorus that echoed through the shattered cityscape.

But all of that paled compared to what loomed ahead.

A giant demon towered above the city, its massive body rising higher than even the tallest burning buildings. Its white skin looked almost metallic under the firelight, stretched over a frame so enormous that each step sent a tremor through the streets. Long, unnaturally stretched limbs swung loosely at its sides, each arm thick enough to crush a house and each finger ending in black claws as long as spears.

Its featureless face slowly turned toward them, and even without eyes, Issei felt its attention lock onto him. Its chest expanded, its massive frame pulling in air with a deep, thunderous rumble before it roared. The sound tore through the burning city like a shockwave. Several buildings folded instantly, their weakened frames snapping apart as windows shattered and walls disintegrated into clouds of debris. Streetlamps bent and tore from the ground. Chunks of pavement ripped free and skidded across the ground in every direction. Smaller demons were thrown off their feet, tumbling end over end before slamming into rubble.

But Issei and his commanders stood firm, even as the ground cracked beneath them, the force of the roar forming a rolling wave of destruction tearing straight toward their position.

It was in that instance that Aegis made his move, the heavily armored warrior surging past Issei in a burst of speed, slamming his shield into the ground with both hands. The defensive aura of the Attractive Shield expanded instantly, unfolding into a massive shimmering barrier that wrapped around the entire formation. The shockwave hit it like a runaway freight train, sparks exploding along the surface as the pressure pounded against it.

The ground behind them fractured from the force, but none of them reached Issei and the other commanders, who called out simply.

"Glacia."

At once, the Shadow ice witch launched herself upward, the Staff of Avarice spinning in front of her as cold air spiraled from her fingertips. She raised both hands, stopping her ascent midair before thrusting both her arms forward, shooting a devastating beam of icy from her staff, its energy tearing through the street and erupting with a sound that drowned out even the echo of the demonic roar.

The beam annihilated every demon in its direct path, freezing the ones on the edges solid in an instant. Entire blocks vanished beneath the surge, buildings flash-freezing before shattering under their own weight. Before the giant demon could react, the blast of ice slammed to its torso, tearing off its upper body before encasing the rest of its body in thick glacial ice.

The city fell silent for a heartbeat, while steam and frost swirled through the air.

"Hmm…" Issei smirked, throwing his Abyssal jacket on after taking it out of his inventory. The shadow beneath his feet once again expanded, before the rest of his Shadow Army emerged with the battle roar of both Vulcan and Asterius "Alright, you all know your assignments."

"Let the hunt begin."

"Master Cid, Zeoticus is here to see you."

"Ah, there he is." Cid said, smiling a little as he walked across the room with his hand extending toward the crimson haired man who entered behind his assistant "Thank you for coming."

"Well, I had some free time this evening, so I came as soon as you called," Zeoticus replied with an easy smile before his attention shifted to the large glass wall overlooking the lower lab. "Are those…?"

"Yes. They're the eggshells that Issei and I found on Jeju during the Ant Gate Raid," Cid confirmed with a nod. Below them, several researchers moved around the massive shards. Magic circles hovered over the curved, cracked surfaces as lab technicians examined them through both magical and scientific means, taking physical samples and checking composition and density of each shell. Large monitors displayed cross-section diagrams and fluctuating magical readings, each one confirming the one and only fact that they had been able to learn from the moment those egg shells were discovered.

Whatever had hatched from these shells was far beyond ordinary, even by Gate beasts standard.

"I take that we still have no idea what they are." Zeoticus said, his tone calm but carrying a clear edge of concern as he looked at each shell on the examining table down below.

"Unfortunately." Cid answered, nodding his head as he folded his arms across his chest. "Azazel came by earlier, but even he couldn't identify the creature that hatched from these. He said the reading doesn't match any known species from all of the known worlds, not even the extinct ones. He'll return to do more tests later, but I don't think any of them will bear fruit at this point."

Zeoticus hummed thoughtfully, eyes narrowing as he watched one of the researchers recoil when his measuring spell overloaded and shattered into sparks. "And the energy output?"

"As you can see, it's still rising." Cid replied "Even separated from the shell fragments, the residual energy hasn't stabilized. If anything, it's strengthening. Whatever creature came out of those eggs, it was born strong."

"What about that red one?" Zeoticus asked, turning his attention to the lone shell secured inside a reinforced tank filled with chemical-green fluid at the center of the lab.

"I think you can probably guess what had come out of it, my friend." Cid sighed, bringing a cigarette to his lips and lighting it with a quick snap of his fingers. A thin trail of smoke drifted upward before he added. "But we won't know for sure until the scans finish."

He took one last look down at the lab before turning away from the glass wall.

"Anyway, how about we head down to the cafeteria? I haven't eaten since noon."

Zeoticus gave a small smile. "I had dinner earlier with my wife, but… why don't you let me accompany you."

"Great. Let's go then," Cid said, leading the way toward the elevator as the lab work continued behind them.

The elevator doors slid open to the soft chatter of the cafeteria. About a dozen Heroes were spread across the spacious room, some still in partial gear with weapons resting beside them and helmets placed on trays as they ate in small groups. A few nodded respectfully to Cid as he and Zeoticus entered, but most kept to their meals and conversations.

"By the way, Cid," Zeoticus said, lowering his voice just enough to keep the conversation private as they moved along the line. "How's Issei doing? I heard you've been giving him quite a few assignments lately."

Cid let out a soft chuckle as he glanced around the cafeteria for a second before turning back to Zeoticus. "He's handling them fine. Energetic as ever, maybe a little too eager at times." He said, moving up the line before continuing "By the way, did you know he left on a trip to Egypt with Lady Aphrodite earlier today?"

"Oh yes, my daughter told me about that. I had to admit I was a bit jealous of our Sekyruutei." Zeoticus nodded with a soft chuckle before a frown made it to his face "Rias also told me Ingvild passed out earlier."

"The Leviathan girl?" Cid asked in surprise, noticing a Hero letting out a laugh as he listened to the joke his friend told him "You're saying her Sleep Disease returned?"

"We're not sure yet," Zeoticus replied with a shake of his head. "We had her moved to Serafall Hospital. She's awake now, but she still needs to be closely monitored."

Cid nodded thoughtfully, shifting his tray slightly as he moved up the line again. "Good. Keep an eye on her. That Sleep Disease could get serious quickly."

Zeoticus gave a small, affirming nod. "Don't worry."

With that, Cid moved up the line, extending his tray to have it filled with food. The server was a chubby but kind woman, who greeted him with a warm smile as she carefully placed generous portions onto his tray. She hummed softly to herself as she worked, clearly used to the stream of Heroes that came through for meals.

For a moment, Cid said nothing and just watched as his place was filled.

"You know…" And then, he started in a calm, somewhat amused tone. "Everyone hates it when I smoke."

The entire cafeteria became dead silent. The clatter of trays and low murmurs vanished instantly, leaving only the faint hiss of the ventilation in the building. Even the Heroes froze mid-bite, but none of them looked at Cid as he exhaled a cloud of smoke from his lips.

"I mean… you guys sure can act as if you're disgusted," Cid said, blowing a thin stream of smoke toward the lady server, whose expression remained the same even as the smoke washed over her face. "but it's hard to not notice when you don't even breathe it in."

His katanas materialized at his hips with a faint shimmer, pulsing with arcs of purple lightning as he casually turned his head toward Zeoticus, who leaned against the counter with his arms crossed.

"As many questions as I have right now…" Cid said, holding the cigarette between his fingers while his other hand rested on the handle of one his blades. "I guess the only one that matters is whether you're going to let me finish this cigarette or not?"

Zeoticus simply turned to him and offered a calm, knowing smile.
