Chapter 4 - I'M LATE, I JUMPED THE FENCE, NOW I'M BEING HUNTED BY A DEMON.

E.Y.E.S: FRACTURED DESTINY

Arc 1: Sync of Destiny

The second Krishna's feet hit the pavement, he realized something.

THIS WORLD WAS CRUEL.

Morning air? Hot as hell.

Sunlight? Aggressively obnoxious.

The breeze? Blowing, sure—but somehow, it felt like it was mocking him.

What, you think you're cool getting off a minibus like that?

Krishna stood still for a moment.

Exhaled.

Tried to get his head straight.

"Okay, Krishna. You got this..."

But the second he looked ahead—

HIS EYES FROZE.

In the distance. Right there, standing in front of the school gate...

Mr. Udin.

THE LEGENDARY SECURITY GUARD.

He stood tall and proud, like a statue of some unsung national hero.

His bald head gleamed under the morning sun.

From a distance, it looked like he was charging up an RPG power-up. Krishna almost got hypnotized by the damn thing.

His mustache?

STILL THE SAME.

Thick.

Black.

Majestic as ever.

Mr. Udin stood with his arms crossed, his sharp eyes fixed on the gate.

Krishna glanced at his watch.

7:25 AM.

DEADLINE.

His brain immediately went into overdrive.

Plan A: Walk through the main gate.

Risk: Total disaster. Baldie was obviously gonna tear him a new one.

Plan B: Turn around and bail. Pretend school didn't exist today.

Risk: Spend tomorrow eating cassava leaves and getting mistaken for a goat.

Plan C: Walk in casually and pray for a miracle.

Risk:

SAME DAMN RESULT, YOU IDIOT.

Krishna glanced to his left.

The back wall of the school.

A tall fence.

Covered in rusty barbed wire.

BUT BEYOND THAT...

Freedom.

Krishna pondered for a moment.

"Yeah, I think I gotta go that way... Gotta be willing to take a risk."

Then, without another thought—

HE MADE A RUN FOR IT.

He darted left.

Walked casually at first, just to avoid drawing attention.

But once he was far enough away—

HE TOOK OFF LIKE A FUCKING LIGHTNING BOLT.

Mission: Infiltrate the School Without Getting Your Ass Kicked — START.

When he reached the back of the school, Krishna felt like a goddamn ninja.

The tall fence stood right in front of him.

But when he took a closer look...

PIGEON SHIT. EVERYWHERE.

SO. MUCH. OF. IT.

Scattered across the wires.

Smudged all over the metal bars.

Some of it still FRESH. Some of it practically fossilized.

Krishna stood there.

Chest rising and falling.

Taking a moment to reflect on every sin he'd ever committed.

No time to think.

He grabbed the fence with both hands.

Took a deep breath.

"In God's name..."

HE CLIMBED.

One foot up.

Hands searching for a grip.

Knee pressed against the wire.

CLICK.

Something stuck to the sole of his shoe.

Krishna looked down.

Pigeon shit.

"SON OF A BITCHHHH!!!"

He nearly twisted his ankle from sheer disgust.

But then...

There was something else.

A small coin.

A faint blue glow shimmered along its edges.

Krishna blinked.

"What the hell is this?"

He leaned down a little to get a better look.

The coin seemed... stuck to his shoe.

He shook his leg.

It wouldn't come off.

"Even bird shit falls off, but THIS thing won't?!"

He sighed.

"Whatever. Fuck it."

He finally reached the top.

Then he prepared to jump down.

But apparently, the universe wasn't done screwing with him.

The wire he'd grabbed—

HAD SHIT ON IT TOO.

"OH, FOR THE LOVE OF GODDD!!!"

He instinctively let go.

His balance went to hell.

AND—

THUD!

HE FELL INTO THE SCHOOL GROUNDS.

He hit the ground on all fours, ass sticking up, nose buried in the grass.

Silence.

Heavy breathing.

He tried to gather whatever remained of his dignity.

Then, slowly, Krishna got back up.

Wiped his hands on his pants.

Looked at the mess on his shoes.

His lips trembled.

But before he could reflect on his sins—

"HEY!!! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING OVER THERE?!"

A loud voice rang out from the direction of the field.

Krishna turned.

EVANA.

Standing in the distance.

Black sunglasses.

Oversized hoodie.

And in her hand...

THE STUDENT COUNCIL BATON.

THEIR EYES MET.

Krishna immediately froze.

His lips began to move.

"...Dear God, please help your poor servant. Why the hell do I have to run into that creature AGAIN?"

Evana RAISED THE BATON.

Krishna glanced left and right.

NOWHERE TO RUN.

He took a slow step forward.

His gaze went blank.

At the end of Evana's student council baton, every last bit of hope in his life seemed to die.

Krishna slowly lifted his head...

AND SAW EVANA STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM.

Her pastel-colored eyes burned with pure hatred.

"...YOU. YOU AGAIN. WHY IS IT ALWAYS YOU?"

Her voice was flat, but the disgust behind it could've powered an entire universe.

Krishna instinctively flashed a grin.

"Hehe... Morning, Van."

Evana exhaled.

Pressed a hand against her forehead.

"Krishna... I have one question for you."

She stared straight into his soul.

"WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR PROBLEM?"

Krishna shrugged.

"Life's boring as hell, Van. I'm just adding a little color."

"YOUR ASS IS THE COLOR! YOU'RE TURNING MY ENTIRE LIFE BLACK AND WHITE!"

Evana slammed the baton against the ground.

Her eyes were sharp enough to cut steel.

Like a landlady who'd just discovered her water jug had gone missing.

Krishna was about to fire back, but—

Evana suddenly crouched in front of him.

"Okay. You think I don't remember all the shit you've pulled?"

Krishna glanced from side to side.

"Ooh... We playing Remember the Crimes now?"

Evana leaned closer to his face.

"LISTEN UP, YOU LITTLE SHIT."

"LAST WEEK, YOU STOLE THE FLAG-RAISING TEAM'S SOCKS JUST TO HANG THEM ON THE SCHOOL FENCE."

"...I was just messing around."

"TWO DAYS AGO, YOU PUT UP A POSTER OF MY FACE IN THE CAFETERIA BATHROOM WITH THE CAPTION 'RULER OF THE DARK WEB.'"

"It was a tribute, Van. You should be honored."

"LAST NIGHT, YOU HACKED THE SCHOOL SPEAKERS AND PLAYED THE PENGUIN DANCE SONG DURING BREAK TIME!!!"

"That was charity work, Van. The students needed some entertainment."

Evana slammed her baton into the ground again.

"AND TODAY? WHAT ABOUT TODAY, KRISHNA?!"

"YOU SHOW UP LATE AND SNEAK INTO SCHOOL THROUGH THE BACK FENCE?!"

"DO I NEED TO HAND OUT A FUCKING AWARD FOR 'CLASS CLOWN OF THE YEAR' JUST TO GET YOU TO STOP?!"

Krishna leaned back against the ground.

"What can I say? Being normal gets boring, Van. This is way more fun."

Evana went SILENT.

Her eyes narrowed.

Her nostrils flared.

Inside her head:

If I beat this kid to death, would the school get charged with a crime?

Then, out of nowhere, Krishna piped up.

"You really hate me that much, huh?"

Evana reflexively CHOKED THE AIR IN FRONT OF HER.

"OH MY GOD, IT'S NOT EVEN HATRED ANYMORE, YOU IDIOT! THIS IS A FUCKING NATIONAL TRAGEDY!!!"

"IF THE SCHOOL COULD LEGALLY BAN PEOPLE LIKE YOU, I'D PERSONALLY SUBMIT THE PAPERWORK TO THE UNITED NATIONS!!!"

Krishna just grinned.

"You care about me an awful lot, don't you?"

Evana froze.

Krishna continued.

"Think about it, Van. If I disappeared, you'd lose your main source of stress. You wouldn't have a purpose anymore. You might even spiral into a quarter-life crisis."

Evana's eyes twitched.

"YOU... YOU'RE INSANE."

Krishna's grin widened.

"I know."

They stood in silence for a moment.

Then Evana SMACKED HIM ON THE SHOULDER.

"WHATEVER. COME WITH ME. NOW."

Krishna got up.

"What if I run away?"

Evana turned to look at him.

"You think you'd get away with it?"

The two headed toward the school field.

Meanwhile...

The field was heating up.

The flag was ready to be raised.

Students stood in neat rows, pretending to pay attention while secretly wishing they were back in bed.

Elsewhere, Krishna walked down the corridor with Evana right behind him.

Walking?

Not really.

Being dragged?

Pretty much.

Getting slammed into the ground?

Not yet.

Every five steps, Evana jabbed him in the back with her baton.

"HEY! MOVE YOUR ASS! I'M SICK OF WATCHING YOU DRAG YOUR FEET!"

Krishna dragged them even slower.

"Chill, Van. I'm a human being, not a shopping cart."

WHAM!

Evana kicked him in the calf.

He nearly did a fucking backflip.

"YO! THAT HURTS, YOU BITCH!"

"Huuurts?" Evana sneered.

"I CAN STILL SEE YOU BREATHING, SO KEEP MOVING!!!"

WHAM!

Another kick.

Krishna grinned.

His lips moved silently.

At the front of the assembly line, a pair of clear eyes glanced in his direction...

Half-bun.

She looked at Krishna.

And kept looking.

Her eyes widened.

Then... she tilted her head slightly.

"Huh? Is that... him?"

Her eyelashes fluttered.

Once.

Twice.

...

She looked kind of happy.

Just a little.

Maybe a little amused, too.

Krishna was still getting treated like a soccer ball by Evana.

WHAM!

"JESUS CHRIST, VAN! TAKE IT EASY!!!"

Half-bun tried to hold back a laugh.

But her cheeks were getting warm.

Srada, standing behind her, glanced at Krishna too.

Srada:

"..."

Half-bun looked at Krishna.

Krishna looked back.

Half-bun quickly turned to face the front.

Then sneaked another glance.

Meanwhile...

WHAM!

Evana kicked Krishna in the shin again.

"HEYYY!!!"

Evana smirked.

"Do I look like I give a damn?"

Up front, Mr. Joni began his speech.

The microphone crackled.

"EVERYONE!!! WE MUST BECOME THE GOLDEN GENERATION!!!"

Krishna resumed his inner monologue.

Golden what? If I end up in the hospital because of Evana, the only thing I'll get is government health insurance.

His eyes darted back and forth.

His brain was sprinting.

Because he knew...

If he stayed for the assembly, he'd end up getting punished anyway.

Why?

Because he'd been getting kicked around like a leaky bucket someone's mom was dragging into the backyard.

And now?

Evana was right behind him.

One hand tucked into her hoodie pocket.

The other...

Holding the student council baton.

Her eyes looked like those of a parking attendant watching someone reverse their car at the slightest wrong angle.

If Krishna tried to run normally?

Evana would beat the shit out of him first.

He needed a plan.

A smooth, slick, mind-blowing way to escape.

Then...

A DEVILISH IDEA STRUCK.

Krishna put on a casual expression.

Took one slow step...

Then another...

Just a little farther...

And suddenly—

"WHOOOOAAAAHHH!!!"

KRISHNA PRETENDED TO SLIP.

His body flung backward, landing flat on his back.

Evana instinctively reacted.

"HUH?!"

Her eyes widened.

She stumbled back a step.

But—

A SPLIT SECOND BEFORE KRISHNA'S HEAD HIT THE GROUND—

BOOOOM!!!

HIS RIGHT HAND CAUGHT THE FLOOR.

THE MUSCLES IN HIS ARM FIRED, PUSHING HIS BODY UPWARD.

THIS WASN'T YOUR AVERAGE PUSH-UP.

THIS WAS A PUSH-UP THAT DEFIED FATE.

His right arm became a lever.

He launched himself into the air.

Then—

Using the momentum from that push...

His body spun sideways.

WHOOOOOSHHH!!!

IN A FLASH, HE ROTATED HIS BODY INTO A RUNNING POSITION.

SLIPPERY.

FAST.

ZERO LOADING TIME.

This move was way too advanced for an ordinary human being.

Evana WASN'T READY.

SHE WAS STILL STEPPING BACK.

SHE WAS STILL STUNNED.

HER BRAIN WAS STILL LOADING.

AND THEN—

SHE LOST HER BALANCE FORWARD.

HER FACE ENDED UP RIGHT IN FRONT OF KRISHNA'S.

HER EYES WIDENED.

HER BODY WOBBLED.

THEY ALMOST COLLIDED.

A 0.1-SECOND PAUSE.

Evana:

"OH, SHIT?!"

Krishna:

"Huh?"

THEIR EYES MET.

Krishna grinned.

"BYE, VAN."

AND HE BOLTED.

At the front of the assembly line, HALF-BUN—who'd still been sneaking glances at Krishna—was stunned.

Her mouth fell slightly open.

Her eyes went round.

But then...

HER EYES SPARKLED.

HER HEART WENT—

THUMP!

Half-bun's inner monologue:

OH MY GOD... THAT WAS SO FUCKING COOL.

WHAT THE HELL?! WHY WAS THAT SO COOL?! AM I FALLING IN LOVE? NO! THIS IS A TEST OF FAITH!

HE'S A DEMON... SO WHY IS THIS DEMON SO DAMN COOL?!

Her cheeks turned a little red.

But she kept her expression as casual as possible.

Behind her, Srada was GOBSMACKED.

Usually, the kid had a joke ready for everything.

But now?

SILENCE.

Srada's inner monologue:

Hold on... Was that Krishna? Like, ACTUALLY Krishna? Not a stunt double?

He's usually such a clown.

BUT WHY THE HELL DID HE JUST PULL OFF A MOVE STRAIGHT OUT OF AN ANIME?!

Srada was beginning to question reality itself.

Evana was still buffering.

But the moment her brain finally came back online—

"YOU LITTLE DEMON!!! KRISHNAAAAAAAAAA!!!"

BANG!!!

She swung her student council baton against the ground.

Dust erupted into the air.

HER VENGEANCE EXPLODED.

HER EYES BURNED RED.

HER BREATH WAS HOT.

SHE TOOK OFF AFTER THAT LITTLE DEMON.

Krishna was already running like a man who'd just scammed a loan company.

Evana chased after him.

Elsewhere...

Krish had already arrived at Aunt Markonah's house.

He was crouching in front of a miserable-looking electric fan.

There was a massive hole in the back.

The metal safety grille was bent out of shape.

Parts of the casing looked like someone had beaten the crap out of it.

Krish stared at the fan for several seconds.

He twirled a screwdriver in his hand.

"Auntie..."

Aunt Markonah was sitting comfortably in front of the TV.

"Yeah?"

Krish pointed at the fan.

"How'd this thing end up with a hole that big?"

Aunt Markonah kept her eyes on the TV.

"Rats dragged it away."

Krish stopped moving.

"...Dragged it away?"

"Yep."

"What did they drag away?"

"The fan, obviously."

Krish stared at the fan again.

Silence.

"...Those rats must be pretty damn strong."

"Who knows? I heard a lot of noise last night."

Krish scratched his head.

"How the hell does a rat drag away a whole fan?"

Aunt Markonah shrugged.

"That's what I'm trying to figure out."

Krish finally returned his attention to the fan.

He started taking apart the damaged section.

A plate of gehu—fried stuffed tofu—sat beside him.

He grabbed one.

Took a bite.

Chewed.

All while continuing to work.

A few seconds passed.

The TV continued playing a soap opera.

Then suddenly—

STATIC.

The picture changed.

The soap opera music cut out.

A giant headline appeared on the screen:

BREAKING NEWS

Aunt Markonah immediately turned her head.

"Huh?"

A news anchor appeared.

"BREAKING NEWS — A GROUNDBREAKING NEW TECHNOLOGY FROM MIRACLE OF TECHNOLOGY."

Krish was still busy fiddling with a screw.

Aunt Markonah watched the screen.

"Whoa..."

She chewed slowly.

"Pretty cool, huh, Krish?"

Krish grabbed another piece of gehu.

"What is?"

"That."

She pointed at the TV.

"The new technology."

Krish finally glanced at the screen.

Paused for a moment.

"Oh..."

"Yeah."

"They said it's new technology."

"Yep."

Aunt Markonah looked at Krish.

"You understand any of it?"

Krish lowered his head and returned to the fan.

"Nope."

"Huh?"

Krish tightened a screw.

"I don't know anything about that stuff, Auntie."

He picked up his screwdriver.

"I'm just here to fix a fan."

Aunt Markonah chuckled.

"Fair enough."

Krish went back to eating his gehu.

The TV continued reporting on Miracle of Technology's groundbreaking invention.

And Krish?

Still crouched in front of the fan.

As if all that cutting-edge technology had absolutely nothing to do with his life that morning.

Meanwhile...

Somewhere completely random at school...

Krishna was laughing like a goddamn maniac.

One hand clutched his stomach.

His shoulders bounced up and down.

"HAHAHAHA! YO, I'M ACTUALLY INSANE! WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!"

He was hiding somewhere. God knows where.

Maybe behind an abandoned building.

Maybe behind the bathrooms.

Maybe in another dimension.

Whatever the case—

EVANA WAS NEVER GONNA FIND HIM.

The assembly was still going on.

Students were still standing under the scorching sun.

But Krishna?

HE WAS LIVING HIS BEST LIFE.

He glanced up.

Blue sky.

Thin clouds drifting lazily overhead.

A gentle breeze.

He raised his hand, tracing the distant clouds with his fingers.

"Haaaah... This is so peaceful."

And because he was so damn comfortable, he lay down.

Hands behind his head.

Legs stretched out.

A faint smile on his lips.

"No one's bothering me..."

"No Evana..."

"No student council..."

"No guidance counselor..."

"Man, this is fucking paradise."

His eyes slowly closed.

The world felt peaceful.

...

...

...

PLOP!

"OW, YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!"

Krishna immediately winced.

He grabbed his head.

SOMETHING HAD JUST FALLEN OUT OF THE SKY...

AND SMACKED HIM RIGHT ON THE HEAD!

His eyes snapped open.

His skull was still throbbing.

His heart had nearly jumped out of his chest.

"WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!"

He picked up the object.

His fingers slowly closed around it.

He took a closer look.

And the moment he realized what he was holding—

HIS JAW FUCKING DROPPED.

His mouth hung slightly open.

His eyebrows shot up.

His breathing slowed...

Because in his hand...

WAS SOMETHING THAT MADE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE.

We're hanging, but it's not like we're in a relationship or anything. 😜
