Noah woke up to three missed messages from Anna.
He read them in order.
*It went wrong.*
*Ben is dead.*
*Don't come to the motel.*
He sat on the edge of the bed for a moment, processing.
Ben was dead. That matched what he remembered. Damon and Stefan had handled him — and Grams had sealed the tomb. The grimoire arc was essentially over.
Which meant the fallout was just beginning.
*Ding!*

Noah stared at the interface for a moment. Then closed it and got dressed.
___
School was quieter than usual.
Not the normal quiet — the kind that meant something had rippled through the town overnight and people could feel it without knowing why. Mystic Falls ran on that frequency. Everyone half-sensing the darkness underneath and choosing not to look directly at it.
Noah walked through it like he always did. Head down. Listening.
By second period he'd picked up enough fragments to know the official story was already spreading. Something about a gas leak near the old church. Nobody dead — officially.
*Of course.*
Elena was absent.
Stefan's seat was empty too.
Bonnie came in late, sat near the window, and spent the entire class staring at her hands.
*Her grandmother,* Noah realized with a jolt. *Grams.*
He'd forgotten about that part. Sealing the tomb had cost Sheila Bennett everything. By now she was either gone or barely holding on.
He watched Bonnie from across the room. The way she was sitting — hunched slightly, like something inside her had quietly collapsed — told him everything.
*She already knows.*
Noah looked back at his notebook.
He didn't write anything for the rest of the period.
___
Lunch.
He sat in his usual spot and pulled up his interface quietly. Five thousand EXP sitting there, waiting.
"Level me up," he said under his breath.
*Ding!*
**LEVEL UP!**

The familiar surge moved through him. Quiet. Controlled. Nothing visible on the outside.
He closed the panel and picked up his fork.
Across the cafeteria, Jeremy Gilbert walked in alone. No Anna beside him. He got a tray, sat down, and stared at the table.
*He doesn't know yet,* Noah thought. *About Ben. About what happened. He just knows Anna has gone quiet.*
He watched Jeremy for a moment.
In the show, this was the part where Jeremy started unraveling. Lost. Grasping. Anna would come back — for a while — but it wouldn't last.
Noah looked away.
*Not your story to fix.*
___
After school he found a quiet corner of the parking lot and typed out a message to Anna.
*You okay?*
The reply came faster than he expected.
*No. My mother is furious. The tomb is sealed. Everyone we came here for is still inside.*
Noah read it twice. Typed back.
*Where are you?*
*Does it matter?*
He thought about that. In the show Anna stayed in Mystic Falls. Kept pursuing a way to open the tomb. It cost her everything eventually.
He typed slowly. *It matters if you're about to do something that gets you killed.*
A long pause.
*I'll be fine.*
Noah pocketed the phone. He didn't believe that for a second.
"You're getting attached," Freya said.
*I'm being practical.* He started walking. *Anna is a useful contact. Losing her would be inconvenient.*
"That's a very cold way to describe someone who trusted you."
Noah was quiet for a moment. The motel sign blinked ahead of him in the fading afternoon light.
*Yeah,* he thought. *It is.*
___
He spent the evening in his room running through the next stretch of the timeline in his head.
The tomb was sealed. Grams was gone. Bonnie's powers were about to accelerate dramatically. Elena was going to learn more about Katherine. The Original vampire Elijah was still months away — but Klaus was always closer than anyone thought.
And somewhere in the middle of all of it, Noah Blackwood was living in a motel on Route 9, eating gas station food and leveling up in the dark.
He pulled up the shop. SP: 520.
His eyes moved through the listings slowly this time. No rushing.
One skill sat near the top of his radar.
**COMBAT MASTERY [Cost: 1,500 SP]**
*— Grants the host advanced hand-to-hand and weapons combat knowledge. Integrates with existing speed and strength stats.*
*That one next,* he decided. *Stealth and disguise can only get me so far.*
Because the further into this timeline he went — the more unavoidable the fighting was going to get.
He closed the shop and lay back on the bed.
*Save the SP. Stay low. Watch Bonnie.*
He stared at the ceiling.
*And figure out what to do about Anna.*
