Just as the atmosphere was becoming increasingly tense, Nanu suddenly smiled carefree.
"In that case, let's go."
He tilted his head to the side. At the same time as he slipped his Sword and Shield back into his pocket with his left hand, he pulled out a Poké Ball with his right.
"Come back, Krookodile. You've worked hard."
Krookodile, which had been standing in front of Nanu, instantly turned into a red beam of light and disappeared into the Poké Ball.
Facing the slightly astonished looks of the others, Nanu asked in confusion, "What? Didn't you say you wanted to verify my identity?
"Anabel wasn't wrong. I may have left the International Police, but I'm still officially on their roster. Those guys can't possibly just sit back and watch me get thrown into jail, can they?"
His carefree attitude made Anabel roll her eyes.
Jasmine also hadn't expected him to be so laid-back. She couldn't help reminding him, "You should think this through carefully."
"Relax. I've been sick of it for a long time.
"How about we make one last big score together? Once I'm done, I'm planning to run off to Alola. There are Dark-type Meowth and Persian there, and I'm really curious about them."
With both hands in his pockets, Nanu leaned forward slightly, looking as though he were secretly plotting something enormous.
Silas looked at Anabel, whose body was trembling beside him, then looked at Nanu.
He shook his head helplessly.
Jasmine was also thoroughly stunned by Nanu's words.
Judging from his strength, there was no doubt that his position within the International Police had once been quite high.
For someone like that to say something like this was completely at odds with his status.
"Is something wrong with his brain?"
Silas walked over to Anabel and lightly patted her shoulder as he asked.
Anabel glanced at him expressionlessly.
"It is."
"Pfft."
Silas immediately burst out laughing.
"The battle is almost over."
Anabel awkwardly changed the subject. Her pale violet eyes looked toward the coastline in the distance.
Silas responded with a simple, "Mm."
As an important commercial city in Johto, Olivine City possessed a fairly strong defensive force.
Against an ordinary attack by wild Pokémon from the sea, they had quickly gained the upper hand.
If Xurkitree's sudden appearance hadn't caused some of the equipment to overload and malfunction, the entire battle would have ended even sooner.
After all, although battles were fought between Pokémon, command and coordination were an entirely different matter.
The gloomy sky gradually returned to normal as well.
Bright moonlight pierced through the clouds and fell upon the ground, illuminating the smoke and dust so clearly that they could still be seen in the darkness of night.
"This time, the damage to Olivine City is pretty serious."
Silas looked at the thick smoke rising from the harbor and spoke thoughtfully.
Anabel wasn't familiar with the matter, but she remained completely calm.
"It's fine. The people above will provide compensation."
Looking at her unconcerned expression, Silas could only think that it was easy to say that when you weren't the one handling the money.
But what did that have to do with him?
The International Police, who traveled around the world maintaining law and order, were quite wealthy.
Besides, part of their funding originally came from the Johto League.
So compensating Olivine City could also be considered returning the money to its original source.
"Woof! Woof!"
A powerful bark came from outside the woods.
"Officer Jenny of Olivine City requests permission to enter!"
A familiar female voice followed.
"Let's go."
Jasmine stood together with Nanu and called out to Silas and Anabel.
The relationship between the two clearly didn't resemble that between an arresting officer and a criminal.
Although Jasmine had just been talking about punishing Nanu, she wasn't stupid. She had only said it to vent her frustration, and Nanu hadn't actually caused any serious consequences.
Most importantly, Nanu had surrendered far too quickly. He didn't look anything like a powerful International Police officer.
Officer Jenny Niji blinked when she saw the two men and two women walking out of the woods.
"This is Mr. Chuck junior disciple Silas Alaric, along with two International Police officers, Nanu and Anabel.
"They're all here to help resolve this unexpected incident."
As the Gym Leader of Olivine City, there was no way Jasmine wouldn't know the personality of her fellow officer. Before Niji could say anything, she hurriedly stopped her.
Silas wondered if it was just his imagination, but he thought he caught a fleeting trace of disappointment in Niji's eyes.
"Snap."
Officer Jenny saluted.
"Thank you very much for your assistance. Olivine City welcomes you."
"All right. First, take Mr. Nanu and Ms. Anabel back to verify their identities. I'll go deal with the aftermath here.
"As for you, Silas, you can return to the Pokémon Center and get some rest. Come to the Gym tomorrow and find me."
Jasmine didn't give Niji any opportunity to speak and arranged everything in just a few sentences.
Although Silas found it somewhat strange, considering Jasmine's position, there didn't seem to be anything wrong with the arrangement. He quickly nodded.
"Sure. I'll come find you tomorrow afternoon."
Why afternoon instead of morning?
Dealing with the aftermath wasn't something that could be completed in a short time. Silas estimated that Jasmine would be lucky if she managed to get to sleep before eight in the morning.
"Bye-bye, young Silas~"
Before leaving, Nanu enthusiastically waved goodbye to Silas, acting as though the two were old acquaintances.
Anabel didn't even want to comment anymore.
"Just like that guy said."
Nanu muttered to himself before getting into Officer Jenny's police car.
"Hmm?" Anabel looked at him suspiciously.
Nanu smiled and shook his head.
"Nothing. A friend of mine knows that kid too, and he thinks very highly of him.
"Come to think of it, I absolutely have to go to Alola and catch a Dark-type Persian for him, just so I can show his Persian what a truly powerful Pokémon looks like."
Anabel completely ignored the latter half of his statement.
"He really is a very talented Trainer."
That was her assessment.
Nanu glanced at her.
"Stop right there. You two freaks can keep praising each other in private. Please don't do it in front of me."
As he spoke, he casually leaned against the Arcanine beside him.
"Woof!"
Arcanine stuck out its tongue and barked foolishly.
"You're really hot, big guy. Can't you cool yourself down?"
"Woof."
"You can't? Then can you breathe ice?"
"Woof! Woof!"
The sound of barking continued throughout the journey.
Meanwhile.
After returning to the Pokémon Center, Silas knocked on the door of his room.
"Who is it, meow?"
A trembling voice came from inside.
Silas smiled and deliberately changed his voice.
"Officer Jenny. Room inspection."
"Clang! Bang! Crash!"
A chaotic series of noises immediately came from inside the room.
Silas helplessly slapped his forehead.
"This trio really is something else."
"All right, it's me. Open the door, James."
This time, he used his real voice.
"Click."
After clearly sensing someone peeking through the peephole in the door, the room door finally opened under Silas's watchful gaze.
"Whoosh!"
He suddenly felt a powerful force grab his arm, and his entire body was pulled inside.
"Bang!"
The door was slammed shut.
"You damn brat! Are you trying to scare us to death?"
A furious female voice rang out after the tension finally broke.
Silas stared blankly at his arm without responding.
He looked up at the red-haired Jessie standing in front of him, then thought about it carefully. It seemed there was nothing particularly wrong with the situation.
"How have you been?"
Silas didn't say much and simply asked them how things had been going.
"It's amazing, meow!"
Meowth was sprawled comfortably across the sofa, looking completely satisfied.
"No wonder the boss loves sitting on sofas so much, meow! They're unbelievably comfortable, meow! I feel like I could just die on this sofa, meow!"
It completely ignored Jessie's murderous glare and continued enthusiastically expressing its opinion.
Given their usual habits, even if they had money, they would most likely choose to stay at the cheapest hotel they could find, or simply make do somewhere outdoors.
This was the first time Meowth had enjoyed such luxurious accommodations.
"I never knew the Pokémon Center had rooms this fancy, meow!"
"It's a VIP room, the most luxurious kind. That's perfectly normal."
James explained the situation.
"You damn brat, first explain why you tried to scare us!"
Jessie was completely exasperated.
Silas glanced at her.
"This? Well...
"I remember Mr. Ganta once telling me that there was a red-haired girl who liked going to his office after every class and making a bit of noise outside."
"I'm truly sorry. I was being rather rude just now."
Under Meowth's astonished gaze, Jessie, whose temper was practically explosive, surprisingly restrained herself and apologized.
James didn't find anything strange about it.
Back then, Jessie and he had both studied at the Pokémon Technical School.
Given the way Ganta Sasaki treated his students, Jessie naturally respected the principal from the bottom of her heart.
It was simply that her way of showing that respect was somewhat different from that of ordinary people.
Of course, James had never expected that the two people who had once been expelled from the school would eventually meet again at Team Rocket's training school.
Before that, he and Jessie had never openly mentioned the incident.
"This kind of life is wonderful."
James looked at Jessie, who had managed to restrain her temper, then glanced at the somewhat dazed Meowth on the other side. A smile appeared on his face, one of the countless smiles he had shown since leaving home.
He nodded at Silas.
"Since you're back, that means the situation must have been resolved. We'll be leaving now."
Jessie and Meowth both froze for a moment before quickly moving behind James.
"That's right. We're very grateful for your help, but we still have things to take care of, so we won't bother you any longer."
"Villains can't stay at a Pokémon Center, meow! It's a matter of professional ethics, meow!"
Watching the three of them awkwardly climb out through the window, Silas reached out a hand.
"Uh this is the tenth floor..."
"AAAAAH!"
Their screams echoed through the night sky, but no one paid them any attention.
The next day.
After finishing a full day of training, Silas hurriedly took a shower before leaving the Pokémon Center.
His destination was a trapezoid-shaped building with a room resembling the letter H sitting on top of it.
This was the Olivine Gym.
Ignoring the conspicuous "CLOSED" sign hanging on the door, Silas simply pushed the door open and walked inside.
Seeing him enter, the people inside assumed he was a member of the Gym staff and didn't say anything.
As soon as he entered the Gym, a straight path came into view.
The interior structure of the Olivine Gym was just as straightforward as Jasmine's personality. As long as one followed this path, they could reach the Gym's battle area.
Scattered around it were small rooms used for training apprentices, along with storage rooms for various pieces of equipment.
Silas didn't spend much time looking around and instead quickly made his way toward the deepest part of the Gym.
Jasmine was already waiting there.
"Yo, you're here."
Wearing a special outfit, Jasmine waved at Silas from high above while brushing Steelix's teeth.
Steelix also exposed a row of teeth as a friendly greeting.
With its gums covered in foam, it looked completely different from its usual fierce appearance. Instead, it looked rather adorable and foolish.
Looking at the mysterious fragments of rock scattered around the area, Silas remained completely calm.
"Good evening, Jasmine."
"Wait over there for a moment. I'll be done soon."
Jasmine continued working with her hands while giving him instructions.
Silas casually found a place to sit.
Before long.
After finishing Steelix's care, Jasmine began discussing the ruins they had discovered with Silas.
"Falkner has probably already told you the general situation. They're located somewhat north of Olivine City.
"There are only a few ordinary villages and towns in that area, so I don't know why ruins would have appeared there.
"As for the danger, it shouldn't be too great.
"Based on the information we've gathered so far, the ruins don't appear to possess any offensive capabilities. Their main characteristic is their ability to cause confusion and deception. We suspect there may be a Pokémon inside that specializes in creating illusions.
"A Pokémon that creates illusions? Something like Stantler?"
Silas nodded knowingly.
However, what Jasmine had described was slightly different from what Falkner had told him.
"Equipment malfunction?" Jasmine thought for a moment. "That's actually nothing strange."
She explained, "You aren't a resident of Olivine City, so you wouldn't know this, but the magnetic field in the northern part of Olivine has always been rather unstable. So it's perfectly normal for detection equipment to malfunction there."
Silas frowned.
"Is that so?"
For some reason, he felt that there was something different about this situation from what Jasmine had described.
Moreover, the names of those four villages and towns gave him an inexplicably familiar feeling.
"Could they be from an anime storyline again?"
He pondered hard.
Having a photographic memory was useful, but it only helped if he had actually seen something before.
Silas hadn't been a hardcore Pokémon fan in his previous life. There was no way he had watched every single episode.
"Forget it. I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I'll see what happens when the time comes."
After thinking about it, Silas decided that it wasn't a major issue.
As for the Johto region, there were nothing more than Ho-Oh, Lugia, Latias, Latios, and Celebi among the Legendary Pokémon.
He was very familiar with the first two. He was certain the middle two weren't here, and the last one had a gentle personality and wouldn't hurt people.
"So, our target tomorrow is the village on Route 38?"
Silas looked at Jasmine.
A smile appeared in Jasmine's eyes as she nodded.
"I'll go with you. Falkner will also bring people from his Gym. That should speed things up considerably."
"In that case, how about we have a battle before then?
"I only need one more badge to collect all eight Johto Gym Badges."
Silas's fighting spirit was unmistakable.
"Sure. But the Mineral Badge isn't as easy to obtain as the other Badges~"
Jasmine's voice was filled with confidence as well.
