Silas had never imagined that there could be such a way of doing things.
After all, every individual Ultra Beast was an extremely dangerous existence.
Forget something like Guzzlord, which could swallow an entire building in one go. Even Xurkitree, not far away from them, was stronger than the vast majority of Pokémon at the so-called "Quasi-Champion" level.
Fortunately, it was Jasmine's Steelix that was facing it, giving her an overwhelming type advantage. Otherwise, in weather like this, Silas had reason to believe that this Xurkitree could even contend with Champion-level Pokémon.
In other words, the fact that a pure Electric-type Pokémon could achieve this much against a Steel/Ground-type Pokémon was enough to demonstrate just how powerful the former was.
The threat posed by such a creature appearing near a city was obvious.
"Uh, Xurkitree isn't particularly aggressive or dangerous. Generally speaking, it won't actively attack humans who aren't its target."
Nanu simply spread his hands and gave a brief explanation.
In fact, according to the data they currently had, aside from Guzzlord, most of the other Ultra Beasts weren't particularly violent by nature.
Their attack patterns tended to be more passive.
That was also why the International Police dared to let Anabel operate outside the Alola region.
Otherwise, the League would never have allowed something like this to happen.
"Then how do you explain the situation we're in right now?"
Silas narrowed his eyes.
He could completely understand the International Police's reasoning.
It was nothing more than the fact that Alola was under too much pressure from having to deal with Ultra Beasts on its own, so they were simply trying to divert some of that pressure elsewhere.
Compared to the Alola region, which consisted of four major islands, the other regions had far greater capabilities.
At least that was the case as long as the four Island Guardians didn't intervene.
But understanding something and accepting it were two different things.
Although Viridian City probably didn't have to worry much about the threat posed by Ultra Beasts with Giovanni stationed there, what if something went wrong?
Silas had lived in Viridian City for nearly twenty years, and he had many people he knew there.
"Well, about that..." Nanu's expression visibly became somewhat awkward. "It's mainly because this happened to coincide with the rampage of the sea Pokémon. Otherwise, things shouldn't have turned out like this."
If there hadn't been a thunderstorm, he could have dealt with Xurkitree on his own. There would have been no need for Jasmine to intervene.
After all, he had once been the head of an International Police department. He still had that much strength.
The awkward part was the weather.
In a thunderstorm, putting aside the fact that the weather could help facilitate Electric-type attacks, the constant cycle of expenditure and replenishment alone was enough to push the power Xurkitree could display to another level.
On top of that, Ground- or Rock-type Pokémon, which had an advantage against Xurkitree, were greatly weakened by this kind of weather.
With one side gaining while the other lost, even though one of Nanu's main Pokémon was a Ground/Dark-type Krookodile, he was still struggling greatly against Xurkitree.
Fortunately, Jasmine had arrived quickly enough.
Only now did Silas notice that a Krookodile was fighting alongside the Steelix.
Every time it burst out of the ground, the powerful attacking Krookodile would inflict tremendous damage on Xurkitree.
One focused on offense while the other focused on defense. The two Pokémon worked together with remarkable coordination.
"Speaking of which, if a Rock- or Ground-type Pokémon has water covering its body, wouldn't it be protected from Electric-type attacks?"
Silas rubbed his chin and muttered to himself.
He had simply remembered the scene from Pikachu's early days when it faced Brock's Onix.
But saying that Pikachu had actually injured Onix with its Electric attacks didn't seem quite right either. Onix looked more like it had simply been damaged by the water itself.
After all, Water-type attacks were four times super effective against a Rock/Ground-type Onix.
At the same level, even a Water Gun could produce an effect comparable to the standard power of a Hydro Pump.
"How could that be?"
Nanu immediately rejected Silas's words.
"How could type advantages be broken that easily?"
He was starting to wonder whether the young man standing in front of him was really the Silas that Looker had talked about.
How could a genius Trainer not even understand something like this?
"Just kidding. Don't get nervous."
Silas smiled.
Nanu felt that he probably couldn't keep up with the way modern youngsters thought anymore, even though he wasn't actually that much older than them.
"Eh..."
"Don't you have any Pokémon that can help? At this rate, the battle is going to last much longer than expected."
Silas directly interrupted Nanu just as he was about to say something.
Nanu rolled his eyes at being interrupted.
"Xurkitree is an extremely powerful attacking Pokémon. Don't be fooled into thinking it can't do much damage to Steelix and Krookodile. That's entirely because of their type advantage.
"Even if my other Pokémon could damage it, they'd be defeated very quickly.
"Ultra Beasts become stronger after defeating Pokémon, almost like having the Moxie Ability, so they absolutely can't be sent out.
"Although, what about you? I remember Looker saying that you're pretty strong. Why don't you go and help?"
"Pidgeot and Blaziken? You expect me to send them up there just to feed them to it?"
Silas's expression remained unchanged.
One was a Flying-type facing an Electric-type, while the other was a Fire-type fighting in the rain.
His two ace Pokémon really had no room to display their abilities here.
The two Poké Balls at his waist shook unhappily, but neither made any further movement.
Both Pidgeot and Blaziken knew that Silas was right. He wasn't deliberately putting them down.
"Fine."
Nanu shrugged indifferently while playing with his kendama.
"Don't worry. It'll be over soon."
His expression was completely calm.
Silas glanced at him.
Mr. Riddle, please get out of Olivine City. Thanks.
"Hm?"
Just then, he sensed something and looked into the distance.
Nanu followed his gaze and glanced over.
With his usual laid-back tone, he said, "See? Isn't that what we've been waiting for?"
In their field of vision, a dazzling blue-purple light flashed across the sky.
As a glowing white sphere shot into the sky, the dark heavens instantly became bright.
Even the dense storm clouds showed signs of dispersing, and the torrential rain suddenly weakened considerably.
"Alakazam, use Psychic!"
A somewhat androgynous voice rang out across the sky.
The next moment, an Alakazam with a long mustache appeared in the clearing among the trees, carrying a person with it.
"Whoosh..."
Alakazam's eyes suddenly widened. It raised the three-fingered hands holding its spoons and crossed them in front of its chest.
"Vmmm..."
An invisible wave spread outward.
Xurkitree had clearly sensed that something was wrong as well and attempted to react.
But how could a Psychic-type Pokémon's attack be so easy to dodge, especially when Alakazam had struck first?
"Bang!"
With its limbs, which had been firmly embedded in the ground, forcibly pulled out, Xurkitree was caught completely off guard and was sent flying by the Psychic.
And that wasn't the end of it.
"Roar!"
A deep-red Krookodile appeared directly in Xurkitree's path.
A white light flashed across both of its claws. It was Hone Claws, a move capable of increasing its offensive power.
Immediately afterward, a dark brown energy filled with immense malice condensed around its claws.
Under the cover of the night, the energy looked even more sinister.
"Graah!"
Both claws swung out in succession, and Xurkitree let out a tremendous scream of pain.
Silas narrowed his eyes.
What a fast reaction.
He recognized the move. It was one of the Dark-type moves, Assurance.
Its base power wasn't particularly high, but when used against an opponent that had already been damaged, its power would double, making it no weaker than a powerful same-type attack.
This kind of move and fighting style were practically the trademark of Dark-type Pokémon.
"Steelix, use Earth Power."
Although Jasmine had no idea who the Alakazam was or who the powerful Psychic-type Trainer who had suddenly appeared was, she immediately followed up with another attack.
Steelix's tail glowed faintly before it slammed heavily into the ground, yet strangely, it made no sound at all.
After a delay of one or two seconds.
"BOOM!"
A pillar of earth shot into the sky, sending Xurkitree, which had only just managed to stand back up, flying into the air once again.
Xurkitree had no face, so it was impossible to tell what expression it was making, but Silas could read its panic from its movements.
Yellow arcs of electricity raced wildly across Xurkitree's body.
It endured the tremendous damage from the Ground-type attack and prepared to use Magnet Rise to adjust its position in midair.
"Whoosh!"
A yellow figure appeared above Xurkitree.
"Alakazam, use Dazzling Gleam!"
Following its Trainer's command, pink light erupted from the two spoons in Alakazam's hands.
The dazzling light made Silas instinctively narrow his eyes.
When everything finally settled down, Xurkitree had already crashed onto the ground.
Deep craters surrounding it told the story of the brutal beating it had just endured.
They didn't even know each other. This was their first time working together.
Yet because of the strength of their Pokémon and the abilities of their Trainers, the Pokémon and Trainers worked together with astonishing coordination.
"Whoosh!"
A ball flew through the air in a beautiful arc and landed on Xurkitree.
It immediately turned into a red beam of light and disappeared inside.
It looked just like catching a Pokémon.
Upon closer inspection, however, the Poké Ball was not a type that could be found on the market.
It had a blue-black base, accompanied by spiderweb-like patterns and crossed markings, with four yellow protrusions arranged neatly across its surface.
"This is a Beast Ball. One of these costs several million."
Seeing that Xurkitree wasn't resisting inside the ball, Nanu, who had remained calm throughout, finally breathed a sigh of relief before explaining.
"That's all?"
Silas, on the other hand, found it somewhat strange.
A Poké Ball capable of catching an Ultra Beast naturally had to contain an extraordinary level of technology. These weren't ordinary Pokémon from this world, after all.
"That's only the manufacturing cost. If you're talking about its actual value, it would be worth more than double that. Who knows how much was spent on research and development beforehand?"
The Trainer of Alakazam added from the side.
Silas rolled his eyes at her.
"I really didn't expect Anabel to show up here so quickly. Don't tell me this thing really came here because of you?"
"There's a mission taking place nearby recently. So that's probably the case."
Anabel nodded as she brushed her long purple hair aside.
"Normally, their tracking ability has a certain delay. I didn't expect it to happen so quickly this time."
That's right.
The Trainer who had arrived to provide support with her Alakazam was none other than the future Battle Legend, Anabel.
With her long hair and the uniform she wore, she didn't look nearly as difficult to distinguish from a woman as she would in the future.
"You know her?"
By now, Jasmine had also brought Steelix over to Silas's side.
She looked at Nanu with an expression that wasn't particularly friendly.
If it weren't for the fact that he was affiliated with the International Police, Jasmine felt that as a Gym Leader and the guardian of the city, she would definitely have to teach this guy a proper lesson.
A Pokémon of this level had appeared near her city, yet the person responsible couldn't even deal with it.
Wasn't that just asking for trouble?
Fortunately, it was an Electric-type Pokémon.
Otherwise, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
"Yeah. This is Anabel from the International Police. We've spoken a few times. She's very strong.
"And that's Nanu, a former member of the International Police. I've heard of him, but I don't know him well."
Silas briefly introduced the two.
The difference in how close he was to them was obvious.
A helpless look flashed across Anabel's face.
As expected, Jasmine's expression immediately changed.
"Former International Police? So that means the uniform you're wearing is fake?
"I am now ordering you, as the Gym Leader of Olivine Gym, to come with me to the Olivine City Police Station so that we can verify your identity.
"Otherwise, I have reason to suspect that you pose a threat to the city, and I will be justified in taking action against you here and now.
"Please recall your Pokémon immediately."
Nanu's face instantly stiffened.
"Well, although I did leave, I'm still technically..."
"Then there's no need to say anything more. Please cooperate with my work."
Jasmine's expression remained stern, and she didn't give him an inch.
Steelix very naturally adopted a fierce expression.
Nanu immediately turned toward Anabel and gave her a pleading look for help.
Actually, if this had been most other cities, the Gym Leader probably wouldn't have taken such a strong stance.
Unfortunately, this was Olivine, and the Gym Leader was Jasmine.
After all, as a Trainer specializing in Steel-type Pokémon, how could her personality possibly be soft?
"Um... Although Nanu did leave the International Police, his name is still on the roster, and this wasn't his intention."
Anabel had no choice but to explain softly.
Normally, if it were an ordinary colleague, she would simply cooperate. In the end, the International Police would probably step in, apologize, provide compensation, and get the person released.
Nanu still had enough influence for that.
But Nanu was also one of the people who had saved Anabel's life.
Back then, if Nanu and Looker hadn't taken care of Anabel after she had fallen out of an Ultra Wormhole with her memories lost, she very likely would have been killed by an Ultra Beast long ago.
Anabel naturally couldn't simply watch Nanu get taken away.
More importantly, the International Police really were in the wrong this time. They had no solid ground to stand on, otherwise the situation wouldn't have become so awkward.
The atmosphere instantly became tense.
[A/N: Nanu would eventually become the Island Kahuna of Ula'ula Island. Later, Professor Kukui invited him to become one of the Elite Four of the newly established Pokémon League, but he refused. At this point in the story, his strength isn't particularly high, as this takes place around the period when he leaves the International Police after discovering Anabel.
Jasmine's strength is based on her level as a Master Rank Pokémon Contest participant. Her participating Pokémon is Steelix, and her primary occupation is still being a Trainer, with Pokémon Contests merely being a hobby. The power classifications are the same general Normal, Great, and Master divisions used later in the Pokémon World Championships, although Pokémon Contests have different competition formats, so the number of participants is different and there is no "Masters Eight" designation.
Note 2: According to Looker's account of Wicke's statement, a Beast Ball costs several million.
Wicke is the Aether Foundation's assistant branch chief.]
