"I'm fine, really," Silas said with a smile to Blaziken.
"Togepi~!" Togepi raised both of its tiny hands in agreement.
Although Togepi couldn't sense emotions as precisely as Blaziken could with its aura, as a Pokémon naturally attuned to warmth and joy, it could feel the happiness in Silas's heart.
Blaziken gave a slight nod, signaling its understanding.
Silas was thoughtful for a moment. Come to think of it, Togekiss also had the potential to learn Aura Sphere.
It might be a good idea to have Blaziken teach it sometime.
"Snivy~"
"What are you all talking about? I don't get it." Snivy looked up at the trio with wide eyes, puffing out its cheeks as its vines wrapped around Silas's leg.
It had seen Blaziken use aura before and had been curious enough to ask Silas about it afterward—only to learn it couldn't learn it itself, which left it sulking.
Silas crouched down and gave it a fond pat on the head, chuckling.
Before long, Togepi leapt from his arms and began playing around with Snivy.
The two little ones, being close in age, got along quite well and were having a great time together.
Walking along the path through Mosswood Town, Silas opened the map to plan his next route.
To the right of Mosswood Town was Dark City. However, the Dark-type Gym there was unofficial, and its badge would not be valid for entering the League Tournament.
And despite being called a "city," Dark City didn't have any notable industries or development. Its ranking among towns was quite low. If not for the current Gym Leader having decent strength, it might have fallen to the bottom already.
Silas remembered clearly that in the future, Dark City would become even more desolate. The current Dark-type Gym would likely disappear, to be replaced by two private Gyms: the Kazz Gym and the Yass Gym.
It was a natural progression—unless a Gym was official, its survival relied entirely on the efforts of the Gym Leader. That meant going on wild expeditions and taking on dangerous missions to fund operations.
A single misstep in the wild could easily lead to death, and Gym Leaders prepared themselves for that possibility well in advance. The unfortunate ones, however, were the local townspeople left behind.
Silas shook his head. What did any of that have to do with him? It wasn't like he could go around warning people about the future. He didn't know enough to make a difference anyway.
To the left of Mosswood Town was a popular fishing spot: Lake Dratini.
Of course, the name was mostly for show. Since its establishment, no one had ever caught a Dratini or Dragonair there.
Its popularity stemmed from the fact that the lake connected to various waterways from other regions, making it possible to fish up Pokémon that were rare or unseen in Kanto.
For example, Chinchou (Water/Electric-type), Lotad (Water/Grass-type), or Corphish (Water-type).
In the present time, connections between regional Pokémon Leagues weren't nearly as close as they would be in the future.
It would likely take the development of convenient transportation and more frequent travel for ordinary people to become familiar with the common Pokémon of other regions.
Moreover, importing Pokémon from other regions posed ecological concerns. Catching one or two in the wild was fine, but letting them form a population could disrupt the local food chain and cause serious issues.
Still, for those who loved Pokémon, what could be more exciting than seeing a rare species up close? It was no wonder the lake was so popular.
But for Silas, there wasn't much point in going.
To the north was Stone Town, where he had just come from. Looking at the map, Silas realized he only had one real option left.
He traced a path on the map with his finger, landing on a city: Nameless City.
Next to it, a note listed its highlights: Exeggutor Forest.
"Well then, that'll be my next destination," Silas said cheerfully as he rolled up the map.
And yes, the name of the city was really "Nameless City"—not in the sense of having no name, but literally named Nameless. So don't be too surprised.
Silas snapped his fingers at the sky, and Pidgeot, ever obedient, burst out of its Luxury Ball in a flash of light. It understood right away.
After recalling his other three Pokémon, Silas climbed onto Pidgeot's back and gave it a pat, signaling it was time to go.
Yes, Silas had improved. He no longer had to lie flat on Pidgeot's back—he could now sit upright, a cause for celebration.
If not for that Skarmory suddenly grabbing him mid-air last time, he wouldn't have embarrassed himself then either.
"Pidgeot~"
With a soft cry, Pidgeot beat its large wings and rose smoothly into the sky, drawing the attention of the villagers below.
"Wow!" the kids gasped, jaws dropped. "What a big bird!"
A little girl standing outside the potion shop Silas had just visited looked on with curiosity.
"Kiara, stop staring outside. Come help grind herbs," came Granny Leshy's voice from inside.
"Coming, Grandma!" the girl answered and darted inside.
Nameless City wasn't as small or simple as Mosswood Town. Before long, Silas looked down from above and saw a relatively bustling city appear beneath him.
Pidgeot descended slowly, landing just outside the city.
"Great job. Take a rest now. Lunch's coming up," Silas said, sliding off Pidgeot's back and giving it a pat.
Pidgeot rubbed its head against him affectionately before returning to its Luxury Ball in a flash of red light.
Silas made his way to Nameless City's Pokémon Center, grabbed a meal for himself, then walked to the training grounds out back and fed all his Pokémon.
After a bit of post-lunch exercise, the time was already creeping past 1:30 p.m.
With his team in tow, Silas began heading toward Exeggutor Forest.
Exeggutor Forest—currently the most well-known forest in Kanto for its population of Exeggcute and its evolved form, Exeggutor.
Due to their Psychic typing, Exeggutor attracted a lot of attention from trainers, and the forest drew enough traffic to contribute significantly to Nameless City's growth.
However, because of the dangers associated with Psychic-type Pokémon, neither the League nor the city government dared to fully manage the area. The risk of provoking an Exeggutor riot was too high, and such an incident could lead to unpredictable disaster for the city.
Thankfully, Exeggcute and Exeggutor were considered relatively gentle Pokémon. With proper precautions, coexistence with humans was possible.
Another major attraction of this forest? It was widely believed to contain large quantities of Leaf Stones.
That conclusion was easy to draw: since Exeggcute could only evolve into Exeggutor using a Leaf Stone, there had to be a local source for so many to exist here.
Still, the same issue remained—Psychic Pokémon were extremely dangerous. Even if you could defeat one in battle, that didn't stop a whole swarm from overwhelming a trainer.
Thus, entering Exeggutor Forest to search for Leaf Stones remained a high-risk venture.
At that moment, Silas was navigating the woods cautiously, flanked by his Gigalith and Blaziken.
"Ta~"
A lone Exeggcute rolled past him without even sparing him a glance. It had seen too many humans to care anymore.
Exeggcute, despite its appearance as six separate egg-like entities, is more accurately a Pokémon composed of plant-like seeds. Especially when one of the five cracked eggs surrounding the intact, smiling central egg occasionally reveals a yolk inside—it looks even more like actual eggs.
Don't be fooled by the cracks on their shells; Exeggcute are surprisingly tough, and they rarely separate. In fact, once the cracks reach a certain threshold, it usually signals the best time to use a Leaf Stone to trigger their evolution.
Each "egg" in an Exeggcute cluster is mentally linked to the others. They're always found in groups of six—another hint at their psychic-type nature.
Silas paid no mind to the wandering Exeggcute and continued his careful search through the forest.
His goal today was to try his luck—perhaps find one or two Leaf Stones.
Although he wasn't particularly desperate for evolution stones at the moment, no one ever complained about having too many resources on hand.
"Exeggu~ Exeggut~ Exeggutor~"
From a distance, the loud calls of Exeggutor echoed through the forest.
These grating sounds came from each of the Pokémon's three heads voicing their thoughts.
But unlike other Pokémon with multiple independently-thinking heads—like Dodrio or Zweilous—Exeggutor's heads generally got along well. They didn't argue, they just had extremely divergent thought patterns.
There's even a legend: when an Exeggutor matures sufficiently, one of its heads will fall off and form part of a new Exeggcute cluster—just one of the six "eggs."
That new Exeggcute then searches for another group missing a member, merging to complete the cluster.
It could explain why wild Exeggcute, when seen missing one egg, would mysteriously appear whole again by the next morning.
Of course, this is only hearsay. Most Exeggcute in the wild are still born the conventional way—through egg-laying by an Exeggutor and its mate.
"Flamethrower!"
Silas gave the order, and Blaziken launched a stream of flames at an aggressive Exeggutor blocking their path. This one seemed to be the hotheaded type in its group.
Thanks to both a gap in level and type advantage, the Exeggutor was quickly defeated and knocked out of commission.
This also reflected why Silas wasn't particularly keen on capturing an Exeggutor.
Despite being dubbed the "walking tropical rainforest," this Grass/Psychic-type Pokémon with its unique three-head design could amplify the power of certain moves and prove formidable in battle. Exeggutor could even learn support moves like Grassy Terrain, and the Psychic typing had many practical advantages.
However, its type weaknesses were just too severe.
With the emergence of Steel and Dark types, Exeggutor now had a whopping seven type disadvantages—most notably, a quadruple weakness to Bug-type attacks, which was practically crippling.
And even though it had plenty of resistances too, Exeggutor was far from a defensive powerhouse, making it easy prey in direct confrontations.
In the end, if one were to pick a Psychic-type Pokémon, Silas still thought Gardevoir or Alakazam would be better choices.
He couldn't help but think about them longingly.
