Chapter 154 - Chapter 154: Cleanup

"Apologies for the interruption—Janine, please switch to a different battle Pokémon."

At this moment, the referee stepped in.

"Huh?" Both Silas and Janine voiced their confusion at the same time.

"League regulations," the referee said succinctly.

"But my Weezing is only level 40! Just three levels over the cap—it's fine, Uncle Ji," Janine pouted playfully at the referee, clearly familiar with him.

"It's not about that," Silas suddenly remembered. He had gotten caught up in the moment earlier and overlooked it. "Weezing can't be used against Fire-type Pokémon in an enclosed space. Unless you want to blow up the entire Fuchsia Gym."

He sighed in exasperation. Normal battles were usually held outdoors, so this specific regulation rarely came into play.

And here I was getting all fired up… he thought, feeling a bit disappointed.

Janine's expression twisted into an odd mix of embarrassment and annoyance. She had prepared so much, only to be told she couldn't use it?

As for her other two Pokémon—Muk was her starter and far too high-leveled; using it would be unfair. And Nidorina had only recently started training, not strong enough to battle Blaziken.

"Screw it," she muttered, waving her hand dismissively.

She recalled her Weezing and sent out a properly regulated Gym Pokémon instead.

"Go, Mothim."

Her voice now carried a hint of boredom.

"Blaziken, Flamethrower," Silas responded without objection. It was a little disappointing, but he quickly issued the command anyway. The sooner the battle ended, the sooner he could get to the Pokémon Center for some well-earned rest.

All that bargaining today had worn him out.

"Mothim, use Confusion to control the flames!" Janine called out sweetly. Although she was no longer in the mood, she still carried out her role professionally.

While the two of them were engrossed in their heated battle, a major operation was unfolding across the Pokémon League.

"Sorry to trouble you all—Bruno, Lt. Surge, Koga, and Sabrina."

Professor Oak addressed the four Gym Leaders in front of him.

"No trouble at all."

"Just doing my duty."

"My pleasure."

"…Mm."

Each response was as unique as its speaker.

"Giovanna headed into the depths of Viridian Forest to commune with the Power of Viridian again. Otherwise, we'd have brought him along for this op," Oak added with a brief explanation—even though he knew the others didn't mind.

Today, Professor Oak had ditched his usual researcher's coat and donned his old combat gear.

The arms and physique hidden under the lab coat were now fully visible. Even though he wasn't as young as he used to be, his body still retained most of its strength from his prime—only slightly diminished with age.

"No worries. Just tell Giovanna later—he's hard to reach most days anyway," said Bruno with his eyes seemingly shut, wearing a constant half-smile. Though it was hard to tell if his eyes were actually closed or if that was just how he always looked.

"Fair enough," Oak nodded. "Then—let's move out!"

He looked ahead toward the Viridian Black Market and gave the order.

"Dragonite, Kangaskhan—smash it open!"

"Professor Oak's battle style is still as wild as ever," Bruno chuckled, still squinting. "Guess I'll lend a hand."

"Tyranitar, Steelix, Golem—support Professor Oak!"

"Raichu, Electivire, use Thunderbolt!"

"Crobat, Weezing, hit them with Venoshock and Sludge Bomb!"

Lt. Surge and Koga followed right behind with their commands.

Bringing up the rear was Sabrina. Her eyes were glowing faint blue, and though she gave no verbal commands, the twin spoons in Alakazam's hands crossed in front of its chest as invisible psychic waves rippled through the air.

The Viridian Black Market descended into chaos.

At the same time, in a black market outpost in Pewter City:

"Gramps, the cleanup has started," said a tanned, squinting man.

It was Brock, speaking to his grandfather, Master Wubo.

"Good." The elder Wubo, though aged, still spoke with incredible strength and vigor.

In Cerulean City:

"Misty, watch closely. This is the true power of Water-types," said an older man to the orange-haired girl.

They were another grandparent-grandchild pair.

Ahead of them, a Clawitzer, with its left arm cannon glowing, unleashed Water Pulse, sweeping the area clean. No one could resist its force.

In Vermilion City, the former Gym Leader Maple was teaching his grandson.

In front of them, electric arcs danced wildly, dazzling and intense.

In Celadon City, Erika, dressed in a traditional kimono and wearing her usual gentle smile, spoke sweetly—but her words were chilling:

"Vileplume, release your fragrance~"

In Saffron City, Karate King Nobuhiko was coordinating with Yosuke, Sabrina's father:

"Machamp, Rolling Hell Attack!"

"Alakazam, Psychic Surge!"

Cinnabar Island, Dark City, PJ Town, Sea Forest City, WW Town…

Across the entire Kanto Region, every major city was taking part in a black market purge.

And not just Kanto—Johto and Hoenn were in on it too. Even distant Sinnoh and Unova were launching their own simultaneous operations.

The only difference in each region?

The insignias on the uniforms of those resisting the cleanup.

"Ugh. So boring," sighed Cynthia, resting her hand on the shoulder of her Garchomp as she stared at the disbanded remains of Team Galactic in front of her.

"Heehee~! But isn't that how it's supposed to be, Nana?" said the woman next to her—a regal, elegant figure who smiled softly, exuding nobility and charm.

At her side stood a Pokémon whose body was mostly composed of a black, dress-like substance—Gothitelle.

"By the way, Nana," the mysterious woman asked, "have you been exploring any ruins again recently?"

"No, not lately. Why?" Cynthia turned to look at her friend.

"Oh, nothing. I just… have a strange feeling, like something's off." The woman clasped her hands behind her back as her voluminous golden hair—so exaggerated in length and style it was almost comical—floated behind her in the shape of a heart.

Inside the Conference Room at the Indigo Plateau...

"So, what are your thoughts on that proposal?"

"This isn't the first time we've discussed it. My position remains unchanged—we shouldn't open it to the public. We'd never be able to justify it to the citizens."

"There's no need for that. Now that the black markets across all regions are being dealt with, if we're planning a full transition, we should make it thorough."

"Agreed. Public justification won't be a problem. If we open it, the people will only support us more."

"But the post-op cleanup needs to be properly handled. How's communication with the Officer Jenny family going?"

"They've voiced their support—but they're still short on personnel."

"Then in that case…"

------

"Snivy, use Vine Whip!"

"Snivyyyy!"

Green vines lashed out toward the opposing Pokémon.

"Zubat, dodge it! Use Astonish!"

Janine shouted, directing her Zubat into a counterattack.

Snivy's vines weren't difficult for Zubat to evade, and the bat Pokémon unleashed a loud, chilling screech in retaliation.

Snivy's body trembled.

"Don't get scared, Snivy! Use Magical Leaf!" called out Silas, encouraging his Pokémon.

"Snivyyy!"

Snivy shook off the fear and focused, summoning a stream of glowing, tracking leaves. Each blade had a faint blue glow mixed with its vibrant green. After trailing through the air, the leaves homed in and struck Zubat directly.

It was the third time this exact scenario had repeated.

Zubat crashed to the ground, no longer able to battle.

Janine stood frozen, a sour look on her face. Three times in a row, Astonish had failed to cause flinching. That was absurd!

The referee raised a flag.

"Zubat is unable to battle. Both of Janine's Pokémon have been defeated. The winner is Silas Alaric of Viridian City!"

"You did great, Snivy."

Silas recalled his Snivy back into its Poké Ball. The poor Pokémon was breathing heavily—Astonish wasn't a powerful move, but after multiple attempts and exerting so much energy with Magical Leaf, Snivy was thoroughly exhausted.

"Ugh, seriously? Your luck's insane today!" Janine huffed in frustration.

Silas gave a small smile. His luck today did seem maxed out. Trying to rely on move secondary effects like flinching? Janine was definitely overthinking it.

"Whatever." Janine sighed, then reached into the satchel at her waist and pulled out a heart-shaped, pink badge.

"Here—you've earned the Fuchsia Badge."
