Chapter 153 - Chapter 153: The Ninja Duel at Fuchsia Gym

3 PM, in the forest outside of Fuchsia City.

At this moment, Silas was searching for the location of the Fuchsia Gym.

This was the first trial in challenging Fuchsia Gym.

Its primary purpose was to test a Trainer's ability to locate a precise target in the wild.

After all, compared to the missions where one has to find a person or a Pokémon, a large building like a Gym is already a huge and obvious target.

If a Trainer can't even find the Fuchsia Gym, they needn't even think about the challenge.

This Gym was also one of the few in the Kanto Region that included special trials beyond just the battle itself. Others like Cinnabar Gym had similar additional criteria.

To maintain this trial, the League had even deliberately removed the precise coordinates of Fuchsia Gym from the official maps, leaving only a vague written description.

Fortunately, most Trainers who came to challenge Fuchsia Gym had extensive experience surviving in the wild, so finding a Gym wasn't exactly a big deal for them.

That said, Silas couldn't help but feel a little confused.

Why is the appointment process for these Gym battles getting faster and faster?

He had submitted the request to challenge Fuchsia Gym less than thirty minutes ago, yet the confirmation and battle schedule had already been sent to his wrist device. He had assumed the earliest battle would be around 5 PM.

As a result, he had to quickly wrap up lunch and head into the forest to look for the Gym.

"Pidgeot!"

From the sky came the cry of his Pidgeot.

It looked like it had found something. Silas looked up at the circling bird and gestured for it to lead the way.

With a mighty flap of its wings, Pidgeot soared eastward.

Silas nimbly darted between the trees, with his Blaziken close behind.

Before long, following the direction Pidgeot led him, a massive complex came into view.

"...Whoa," Silas muttered, lips twitching slightly. No wonder Pidgeot found it so fast—this thing isn't hidden at all.

How is this supposed to be a test? Silas thought sarcastically.

In front of him stood the Fuchsia Gym—styled like an ancient Japanese estate, complete with sprawling grounds.

It was filled with numerous rooms and training dojos. Silas estimated its size to be at least two and a half times larger than a Pokémon Center.

Out here in the middle of nowhere, the building was impossible to miss.

He returned Pidgeot to its Poké Ball and kept only Blaziken by his side. As he approached the entrance, the door opened on its own before he could knock.

"Well then, automatic doors?" Silas raised an eyebrow. "Really doesn't match the traditional vibe of the place."

He lifted a leg to step in then stopped abruptly.

Silas raised a hand and touched the invisible wall in front of him.

This was the second trial of Fuchsia Gym—the invisible walls.

To most people, navigating through these unseen barriers and finding the right path to the battle arena wasn't easy. Even if warned ahead of time, first-timers usually smacked right into them.

But for Silas, this was no problem.

Within his heightened perception, these invisible walls were perfectly clear.

Like a skilled craftsman, he smoothly zigzagged through the corridor, and in just ten minutes, he arrived exactly at the Field One listed in his appointment info a small, dojo-style battle room.

Meanwhile, someone who had been secretly observing Silas rolled her eyes and instantly appeared in front of the room.

"Well, if it isn't Janine. Long time no see," Silas greeted, taking the initiative.

He had sensed Janine's surveillance ever since reaching the entrance of Fuchsia Gym. The lightning-fast appointment approval was likely her doing.

So that's what she had been secretly whispering to Nurse Joy about earlier, he thought.

Janine, mid-motion to greet him, froze in place and said awkwardly,

"Good afternoon."

"So you're my Gym opponent today?" Silas continued casually, walking toward the room without breaking stride.

With a neutral expression, he stepped cleanly around several obvious traps, even offering commentary as he did.

"These traps are too obvious. The wires are literally right at the door—next time, hide them better."

"And over here, the soil's clearly been disturbed. Next time, widen the area a bit, make it look like you're doing renovations or something, then lure people in before springing the trap."

Behind him, Janine grit her teeth in frustration.

Ugh, this guy...

The two of them entered the dojo-style battle room.

Inside, a referee was already in position at the sideline. When he saw Silas and Janine enter, he gave them a nod.

Once the two took their respective positions, the referee raised his flags.

"Now commencing the Fuchsia Gym challenge! Gym trainer Janine versus Silas Alaric of Viridian City!"

"This will be a 2-on-2 battle! Janine will send out her Pokémon first. The challenger sends out second and is granted first move advantage!"

The referee was clearly the no-nonsense type.

"Go, Weezing!" Janine tossed her Poké Ball into the field.

"Weeze!"

Within Silas's field of view, a Pokémon formed by one large and one small purple sphere appeared on the battlefield. It had two downward-pointing fangs in its mouth and wore a wicked grin. The larger sphere bore a skull-and-crossbones marking on its stomach, while the smaller one had only a simple ring pattern.

Several protrusions jutted from its body, continuously releasing poisonous gas.

This was Weezing, the evolved form of Koffing. A Poison-type Pokémon, Weezing loves the fumes from rotting, damp garbage and tends to live in the homes of people who don't clean up, scavenging gas from trash cans late at night.

So, while it might look frightening, Weezing is actually a beneficial Pokémon in many ways.

Come to think of it, Weezing's toxic gas—after going through special dilution treatments—can actually be used as a high-quality perfume base. Silas had been speechless when he first learned this.

Poison perfume? They're really finding every possible use for Pokémon materials...

"Hm?" Silas raised an eyebrow as he observed closely, letting out a curious hum.

"Hehe~" Janine giggled proudly. "My Weezing is super special it's triplet-bodied! How about that? Pretty cool, huh?"

On the field, Weezing slowly rotated, revealing a third spherical body behind its main two—just now coming into Silas's view.

"Impressive," Silas nodded in admiration.

Normally, Weezing is a dual-bodied Pokémon where if one side inflates, the other contracts. But in very rare cases, a Weezing with three gas spheres can appear—so-called triplet Weezing.

Generally speaking, such Weezing have more potent toxins and are significantly stronger than average.

But the real issue was… was this even legal?

"Hey, this is your personal Pokémon, not a standard Gym Pokémon, right? Aren't you violating the level cap here?" Silas didn't send out his own Pokémon. Instead, he turned to question Janine directly.

Just one glance told him this Weezing wasn't some freshly evolved level-35 Pokémon. It had clearly surpassed the allowed threshold for official Gym matches.

"Ahem. You're so strong—what's the point of using standard Gym Pokémon against you?" Janine said with an awkward smile. "How about we just battle like this, one-on-one?"

"I'll only use this one. My second Pokémon won't be mine—it'll follow the rules."

"Besides, your registration says you're using Blaziken and Snivy, right? It's fine."

Janine smiled sheepishly, showing no sign of changing her mind.

Silas looked up at the ceiling, speechless.

He was beginning to suspect that all the Gym Leader successors in Kanto had some screws loose.

Oh well. He shook his head.

In fact, only a battle between Pokémon of similar level and power would be meaningful for Blaziken's current stage of growth.

He'd just complain to Koga—Janine's brother about this afterward.

"You're way too casual about this," Silas muttered. "Alright then. Let's go, Blaziken. Burn it down."

A rare fighting spirit lit up in Silas's eyes. Come to think of it, he and Blaziken had never fought a serious, evenly matched battle like this before.

"Now that's more like it!" Janine beamed, nodding in satisfaction.
