Chapter 38 - The Hotel of Broken Souls

The Hotel of Broken Souls

Gerard and Jian approach the abandoned hotel where Drake has fortified himself. But Drake isn't the type to be cornered easily. Meanwhile, Meiying's resentment toward Gerard continues to simmer, her fear twisting into something darker. But Gerard's own bloodlust is becoming a greater threat than any outside enemy.

00:15 – The Mountain Road – Arrival at the Hotel

The SUV's tires crunched over the gravel-strewn road as they crested the final hill. The abandoned hotel rose before them, its decayed grandeur cloaked in shadows.

What had once been a luxury resort now stood as a hollowed carcass of the past. Ivy and rot clung to its exterior, consuming wood and stone alike. Its towering facade loomed over the surrounding forest like a jagged crown of rust and decay.

Gerard stared at the building, his eyes sharp and unyielding. His breath clouded the air, the night's chill seeping into his bones. The darkness here was different—heavy, oppressive. As if the building itself had swallowed too many secrets and choked on them.

Jian's voice shattered the silence. "This place looks like the set of a horror movie. What's the plan, boss? We sneak in all quiet-like, or do we kick down the front door?"

Gerard's fingers tapped against the steering wheel, his gaze never leaving the hotel. "We go in quiet. Take out their sentries first. Make them panic."

Jian grinned. "You know, you're starting to sound more like me every day."

Gerard's eyes flicked toward him, their coldness a sharp contrast to Jian's enthusiasm. "No. I'm just learning how to be efficient."

The system remained silent. But the familiar hunger lingered.

00:30 – The Hotel Perimeter – Clearing the Guards

They slipped through the forest, their movements swift and soundless. The air was damp and heavy, the scent of pine and rotting leaves clinging to their skin.

Gerard's eyes gleamed with predatory focus, his Enhanced Combat Awareness mapping out the positions of the guards as they circled the hotel's perimeter.

Two guards stood at the rear entrance, their voices muffled by the mist. Their postures were lax, their weapons held carelessly.

Gerard struck first. His knife slid into the first man's throat, the blade slicing through flesh and windpipe in a single, precise motion. Blood gushed over his hand, warm and thick.

The second guard managed a strangled gasp before Jian's knife plunged into his chest. The man crumpled, his eyes wide with the shock of his own death.

Jian's smile was wild. "This is too easy."

Gerard wiped the blood from his blade against the guard's jacket. "Then let's make it harder for them."

00:45 – The Hotel's Lower Level – The Slaughter

The interior of the hotel was a labyrinth of decay. Once-beautiful wallpaper now peeled away in long, ragged strips. Floors creaked beneath their feet, each step releasing puffs of ancient dust.

Their presence was a whispered death. Room by room, hallway by hallway, they tore through Drake's men with a brutality that left the air soaked in violence.

Gunfire burst in sporadic exchanges, the muzzle flashes cutting through the darkness like lightning. Bodies piled up in their wake, blood pooling over cracked tiles and seeping into rotted carpets.

The system stirred, its voice a low murmur.

---

[Ding! System Notification – Maintain Ruthlessness]

- Blood alone is not enough. Make them suffer. Let them fear you.

- Your enemies must know the price of their betrayal.

---

Gerard's gaze darkened, his steps growing heavier. His movements became more vicious, each kill less a necessity and more a statement.

Jian watched him with open fascination. "You're enjoying this a bit too much, boss."

Gerard didn't answer. His hands were already stained. And the system's hunger was insatiable.

---

01:15 – The Hotel's Upper Floors – The Confrontation

The air grew colder as they ascended the stairwell, the creak of each step echoing through the desolate corridors. Gerard's Enhanced Combat Awareness pulsed like a second heartbeat, guiding his movements, his thoughts.

The top floor was a wreckage of shattered glass and broken furniture. And there, at the end of the corridor, Drake waited.

Drake stood with his back to the large bay window, the glass spiderwebbed with cracks. His eyes were sharp, the kind of man who had built his reputation on cruelty and efficiency. His pistol was leveled at Gerard, his smile a crooked sneer.

"Walker. I was beginning to think you'd died in the rubble."

Gerard's own gun was raised, his gaze unyielding. "You thought wrong."

Drake's voice dripped with arrogance. "You know, I respect your persistence. It's almost admirable. But this ends here."

Gerard's smile was a shadow of malice. "You think I came here to die? No. I came here to bury you."

---

[Ding! System Notification – Unleash Your Wrath]

- Drake is within your grasp. End him mercilessly.

- The system demands blood and suffering.

- Make your vengeance known.

---

Drake fired.

Gerard's reflexes kicked in, his body moving with a speed that defied human limits. He ducked, rolled, and came up with his gun blazing.

Bullets shredded the air between them, the roar of gunfire deafening. Glass shattered, shards falling like rain.

Jian darted forward, his knives gleaming as he tore through the remaining guards who had taken cover. His laughter was manic, bloodlust painting his features.

Gerard's shots tore into Drake's shoulder, spinning the man around. His scream was cut short as Gerard's fist slammed into his jaw, the force of the blow sending him crashing against the cracked window.

Drake gasped, blood foaming at his lips. "You... you're a damn monster."

Gerard's smile was cold, his eyes filled with nothing but hatred. "No. I'm worse."
