Chapter 42 - Watching the Flame

Watching the Flame

The loan front is in ruins, but the true war has only begun. As Gerard pushes forward, laying traps and burning through Madam Wei's assets, Jian grows more erratic, more intense. Gerard watches from the shadows of his own mind, weighing trust against survival. Meanwhile, Meiying edges closer to discovering a truth that could fracture everything.

---

08:15 – Smoldering Concrete – A Warning in the Ashes

Smoke twisted through the air like dying snakes, curling against the early morning haze. The loan front's office was now a blackened husk, its once-polished glass windows melted into warped rivers of ruin.

Gerard stood across the street, eyes narrowed as the fire engine lights flashed dully in the distance—too little, too late.

He lit another cigarette, not because he wanted it, but because it gave his hands something to do. The scent of ash mingled with the acrid taste of scorched currency and burning drywall.

Behind him, Jian stretched with a cat-like groan, blood drying on his gloves. "They'll feel that one." He leaned against a broken lamp post, eyes half-lidded. "You hear that scream at the end? Chef's kiss."

Gerard didn't respond immediately. He was listening.

Not to Jian.

To the silence in his mind.

The system was quiet.

Too quiet.

And that made it worse.

---

[Ding! Passive Observation Mode Engaged]

- Jian's emotional pressure increasing.

- System interference detected: mental instability vector rising.

- Warning: Continued exposure may result in synchronization drift.

---

Gerard exhaled slowly through his nose.

He wouldn't drift.

Not for anyone.

And especially not for Jian.

09:00 – Meiying's Side – The Pattern Begins

The Wei Estate gleamed under the golden sun, its ornate marble façade pristine and unbothered by the chaos building in the city below.

Meiying sat on the balcony of her suite, her laptop open, fingers moving in short, sharp bursts across the keyboard. The files Gerard had demanded were growing more frequent. He wanted account numbers now. Legal documents. Names of shell companies she didn't even know existed.

And she'd delivered.

Because she had to.

Because she wasn't stupid.

But today… something stood out.

She traced a financial string backward—expecting it to lead to her mother's usual network of dummy accounts. But it didn't.

This one branched off.

To someone else.

Someone in a position of proximity.

A familiar name.

Jian.

Her eyes narrowed.

He wasn't just Gerard's "friend." He had connections. Deep ones. Ones that weren't tied to Madam Wei at all.

Her chest tightened.

"Who the hell are you?" she whispered.

09:30 – The Warehouse – Containment Planning

Gerard paced the warehouse floor, the metal beneath his boots echoing like war drums in the empty space. This wasn't their base—this was something new.

A backup.

He had started preparing alternate routes, safe houses, fallback points. Not for Horizon.

For Jian.

He trusted Jian's talent. His instinct. His killer's edge.

But not his system.

And lately… not even Jian himself.

---

[Ding! Personal Log Created – Subject: Jian]

- Suspected Secondary System Detected

- Behavior: Increasingly erratic, pleasure-seeking, prone to escalating violence

- Risk Level: 7/10

- Contingency Required: In Progress

---

Jian walked in moments later, tossing a plastic bag onto the worktable. The scent of pork buns and grease wafted into the room.

"Thought you could use something that doesn't taste like blood," he said with a grin.

Gerard looked up. "Thanks."

"You sleep?"

"Not really."

Jian shrugged, already digging into one of the buns with teeth like a starving wolf. "You ever think maybe you should stop resisting so hard? Let the system help. Let it push you a little further. You might like what you find."

Gerard said nothing at first. Then: "I've found enough in the dark."

Jian chewed and smiled like he hadn't heard it.

But he had.

10:00 – Behind Their Eyes – Two Monsters, One Mirror

That night, they wouldn't speak of this.

Not the unspoken tension. Not the flickers of false friendship. Not the way Gerard's hand now hovered closer to his gun whenever Jian smiled.

The mission moved forward. Madam Wei's next asset would fall.

But the cold reality set in.

Gerard was no longer just fighting his enemies.

He was preparing for war with his own ally.
