Chapter 20 - Into the Viper’s Nest

Into the Viper's Nest

The pieces are moving. With an uneasy alliance formed with the assassin, Gerard prepares to infiltrate the Black Lantern. Meanwhile, Madam Wei's suspicions about Li Xian grow deeper, and Wei Meiying begins her search for answers. The underworld is shifting, and Gerard must stay ahead—or risk being swallowed whole.

The Plan – A Dangerous Gamble

Jian leaned against the kitchen counter, arms crossed, eyes sharp. "I still think this is a mistake."

Gerard finished adjusting the harness under his jacket, checking the hidden blades and silenced pistol. "Noted."

Jian scoffed. "You know, you could at least pretend to care about my input."

Gerard smirked. "I do. I'm just ignoring it."

The assassin sat in the corner, cleaning his own weapon. His expression was unreadable, but there was a quiet amusement in his gaze.

"You two bicker like old lovers."

Jian shot him a glare. "Shut up, traitor."

Gerard ignored them both, focusing on the blueprint of the Black Lantern laid out before him.

A fortified warehouse, heavily guarded, with underground storage units for Madam Wei's shipments.

Most of the guards were mercenaries. Well-trained, but not elite.

The real challenge was getting inside unnoticed.

Jian exhaled. "Alright, genius, how do we pull this off?"

Gerard tapped a marked entry point. "We go in through the waterway tunnels."

The assassin raised a brow. "Gutsy. Those tunnels are old, unstable. Could cave in at any time."

Gerard's smirk was razor-sharp. "Then we better not take too long."

Meanwhile – Wei Meiying Starts Digging

A high-end café in the city center, bustling with professionals and university students.

Wei Meiying sat at a private booth, stirring her tea lazily as she studied the man sitting across from her.

Chen Rui.

One of Li Xian's former schoolmates.

Tall, well-dressed, with an air of arrogance that screamed second-generation wealth.

He smirked at her. "To what do I owe the honor, Meiying?"

She tilted her head, offering a polite, but distant smile. "I wanted to ask about my brother."

Chen Rui chuckled. "Your brother? Why the sudden interest?"

Meiying's gaze was sharp. "Humor me."

Chen Rui leaned back, tapping his fingers against the table. "Li Xian was… well, Li Xian. Soft. Nice enough, but never someone you'd call strong. He avoided fights, never stood up for himself."

Meiying took a slow sip of her tea. "So you'd say he was weak?"

Chen Rui laughed. "Absolutely."

A long pause.

Meiying set her cup down. "Then explain to me how that same 'weakling' just survived an ambush from trained killers and took down some of Mother's best men."

Chen Rui's smirk faltered.

Meiying's voice was cool, yet edged with intrigue. "Tell me, Chen Rui. Did my brother ever show signs of being something more than he appeared?"

Chen Rui hesitated, as if struggling to recall something.

Then, slowly, he spoke.

"There was… one time."

Meiying leaned forward slightly. "Go on."

**"It was during university. Some thugs tried to rough us up after a party. We all ran. But Li Xian…"**Chen Rui's brows furrowed. "He froze. Then, something changed. It was like he became someone else. He beat one of them so badly the guy was hospitalized. But afterward, he acted like he didn't remember doing it."

Meiying's grip on her cup tightened slightly.

Chen Rui exhaled. "I thought it was just adrenaline. But maybe…"

His words trailed off.

Meiying offered a small, unreadable smile. "Thank you, Chen Rui. You've been very helpful."

As she stood to leave, a single thought ran through her mind.

Who are you, really, Li Xian?

Infiltration – The Black Lantern

The sewer tunnels reeked of stagnant water and decay.

Jian grimaced. "Remind me why we couldn't just shoot our way in?"

Gerard didn't answer. He moved swiftly, silent, following the tunnel system toward the underground entrance of the Black Lantern.

The assassin kept pace beside him, watching Gerard carefully. "You move like a soldier."

Gerard didn't react. "And you talk too much."

They reached a metal hatch, leading up into the storage sector of the facility.

Gerard pressed his ear against it—listening.

Two guards.

Casual conversation. Unaware.

Gerard held up two fingers, signaling the others.

Jian nodded, readying his weapon.

The assassin merely smirked. "Shall we?"

Gerard moved first.

The hatch opened silently, and he was on the first guard before he could react.

A swift, brutal strike to the throat. The man collapsed without a sound.

The second turned—too slow.

The assassin's knife slid clean across his windpipe.

Two bodies down. No alarm raised.

Jian exhaled. "Remind me never to piss you two off."

Gerard gestured forward. "We're inside. Move."

Meanwhile – Madam Wei's Next Move

Back at her estate, Madam Wei listened as Meiying recounted her findings.

A rare flicker of uncertainty crossed her face.

Her stepson was weak. Soft. Unremarkable.

And yet, this new Li Xian moved like a killer. Thought like a strategist.

Meiying's voice was calm. "Something isn't right. Either Li Xian was hiding his true self… or someone else is in his place."

Madam Wei tapped her nails against the desk, deep in thought.

Then—a decision.

"It's time we test him."

Meiying arched a brow. "How?"

Madam Wei's lips curled into a slow, calculating smile.

"We invite him home."

The Game is Changing

Deep inside the Black Lantern, Gerard was moments away from uncovering the truth.

But across the city, a new trap was being set.

Madam Wei was no longer just hunting him.

She was inviting him into her lair.

And Gerard would have no choice but to walk straight into it.
