Chapter 29 - Alex?

The convoy began moving.

Engines awakened in perfect sequence.

A deep mechanical chorus filled the road as dozens of black vehicles rolled forward at once, their polished bodies reflecting the harsh afternoon sunlight like moving mirrors. The soldiers who had formed the outer security layer shifted with precise discipline, creating a moving perimeter around the man at the center.

The VTOL behind them still hummed with fading power, its rotors slowly winding down while dust continued drifting across the landing zone.

But the spectacle was far from over.

More vehicles appeared.

From the far road leading toward the research hangars, a line of matte-black armored SUVs accelerated toward the entrance, sliding smoothly into formation behind the sedans already surrounding the central figure. Their engines rumbled with deep power, each vehicle identical, each driver perfectly synchronized with the convoy ahead.

Above them, the escort helicopters adjusted their positions.

One of them dipped lower, circling slowly above the entrance road while the other climbed slightly higher, maintaining a wider aerial perimeter. Their rotors cut heavy arcs through the sky, the rhythmic thudding echoing across the NASA complex like the pulse of a giant machine.

The convoy itself expanded.

Cars continued joining the formation from surrounding access roads—vehicles that had clearly been waiting beyond sight until the aircraft touched down. They merged seamlessly with the moving column, their tinted windows hiding the people inside.

Within moments the small road outside the entrance had transformed into something far larger.

A moving fortress of steel and black glass.

At the center of it all, Alex walked calmly toward the nearest sedan.

The soldiers around him adjusted instantly, forming a protective arc while the car door opened automatically.

But he didn't enter immediately.

Instead, he paused.

His gaze shifted briefly toward the road where the bus remained stuck in traffic.

From this distance no one could clearly see his expression behind the dark glasses.

Yet something about the subtle tilt of his head made Grace's stomach tighten.

He was looking in their direction.

The younger boy outside the bus froze completely.

Even from dozens of meters away, the atmosphere around the convoy felt oppressive. The soldiers standing near the outer perimeter carried themselves with such cold efficiency that approaching them felt unthinkable.

The boy swallowed nervously.

Inside the bus someone whispered, "There must be… fifty cars."

"More."

"Why would someone need that much security?"

The question hung unanswered in the air.

Alex finally moved again.

But instead of entering the sedan waiting beside him, he walked past it.

The assistant who had handed him the glasses adjusted her pace instantly, following half a step behind him while speaking quietly into a small communication device.

The convoy reacted.

Two of the sedans ahead pulled forward slightly, clearing a path.

An armored SUV rolled closer, its door opening as it stopped beside him.

Alex stepped inside without hesitation.

The door shut with a soft mechanical thud.

The moment it closed, the entire formation began moving.

The front vehicles accelerated first.

Then the ones behind.

Dozens of engines roared to life simultaneously, the convoy sliding forward with controlled power as it headed toward the main NASA entrance.

From the bus, the scale looked surreal.

Black cars stretched across the road like an endless procession.

Helicopters circled above them.

Security personnel lined the edges of the road, their presence alone forcing every other vehicle to remain completely still.

The convoy passed directly in front of the bus.

For a brief moment the armored SUV carrying Alex moved slowly enough that the students inside could see the silhouette of the passenger through the dark glass.

Grace leaned forward instinctively.

Something inside her chest tightened.

The figure sitting inside looked relaxed—one arm resting casually against the door, his posture loose, completely unconcerned by the massive security surrounding him.

Like someone who had lived with this level of power his entire life.

The SUV continued rolling forward.

Then something unexpected happened.

A second aircraft roared across the sky.

This one came from the opposite direction of the earlier jet.

The sound arrived first—an ear-splitting sonic crack that echoed across the complex as the aircraft streaked overhead at incredible speed.

The students inside the bus nearly jumped.

"WHAT WAS THAT?!"

The jet didn't slow.

It sliced across the sky above the convoy before banking sharply and disappearing beyond the horizon.

But the message was obvious.

Even the airspace was being monitored.

The convoy finally reached the main entrance road.

Security gates that normally took minutes to process vehicles opened instantly.

The entire formation drove through without stopping.

Within seconds the black cars disappeared deeper into the NASA complex, their engines fading gradually into the distance.

The helicopters followed.

One by one they lifted away from the area, their rotors cutting through the sky before drifting toward the inner airfields of the facility.

Silence slowly returned to the road.

Dust settled.

The traffic that had been frozen for nearly fifteen minutes began moving again.

Inside the bus, no one spoke for several seconds.

Then someone finally broke the silence.

"…Who the hell was that?"

No one answered.

Even the tour guide sitting near the front looked completely confused.

Grace remained staring at the road long after the convoy had vanished.

Her mind replayed the moment again and again.

The aircraft.

The soldiers.

The endless line of black cars.

And the man inside the armored SUV.

The way he had tilted his head earlier.

The way he had looked toward the bus.

Her fingers slowly tightened around the edge of the window frame.

Because the more she thought about it…

the more impossible the thought became.

Yet she couldn't push it away.

For a split second, when the SUV passed in front of the bus—

she had been certain.

Absolutely certain.

That the man sitting inside that convoy…

looked exactly like Alex.
