Chapter 28 - NASA

The bus had barely moved for several minutes.

A long column of vehicles stretched across the access road leading toward the NASA headquarters complex. Engines idled impatiently beneath the afternoon sun while security officers at the distant checkpoint slowly filtered visitors through the gates.

Inside the university tour bus, the students had started losing their excitement. Phones were out, conversations were fading, and the mood had settled into the dull boredom that always came with traffic.

Grace leaned against the window, watching the white research buildings rising in the distance. Even from far away the NASA complex looked enormous—vast hangars, antenna towers, and glass research structures stretching across the horizon like a small city dedicated entirely to science.

Near the front of the bus, the younger boy who had somehow managed to obtain the extra tickets earlier had stepped outside during the wait. He stood near the roadside barrier, staring at everything with the kind of excitement only a child could have.

Then the sound arrived.

At first it was so faint most people didn't notice.

A deep vibration rolled through the air like distant thunder, low and heavy, almost more felt than heard.

Grace frowned slightly.

That sound was wrong.

Within seconds the vibration intensified.

The distant rumble turned into a powerful mechanical roar that spread across the sky like an approaching storm.

Students lifted their heads.

"Do you hear that?"

The bus windows trembled faintly as the noise grew louder.

Then the sky above them darkened.

A massive aircraft swept overhead.

The moment it passed above the bus the force of its engines struck the ground like a hammer.

Wind exploded downward.

Dust blasted off the road in violent spirals, dry leaves shooting across the pavement while gravel rattled against the sides of the bus. The younger boy outside grabbed the railing to keep his balance as the sudden storm of air whipped his clothes violently around him.

Inside the bus several students shouted in surprise.

"WHAT IS THAT?!"

The aircraft roared forward before banking sharply above the NASA complex.

Now everyone could see it clearly.

It wasn't a normal helicopter.

The machine looked like something pulled from a classified military program. Two massive rotors were mounted on rotating arms, their angles shifting as the aircraft adjusted its flight path with mechanical precision.

A VTOL.

And a large one.

Its engines thundered so loudly the sound echoed across the entire facility.

But it wasn't alone.

Another shape appeared behind it.

Then another.

Two dark military helicopters swept across the sky from the opposite direction, moving into formation above the VTOL like silent guardians.

A third aircraft streaked across the upper atmosphere.

This one was different.

A sleek military jet tore through the sky at incredible speed before banking sharply away from the complex, its engines leaving a fading roar behind it.

Inside the bus someone whispered, "What the hell is going on today?"

The VTOL descended slowly.

As its engines tilted downward the force of the rotors intensified dramatically.

The landing zone wasn't even close to the road, but the sheer power of the aircraft still reached them.

The ground erupted.

Dust surged upward in a massive cloud as the rotors pushed hurricane-force air toward the pavement. The entire entrance area disappeared behind a swirling wall of sand and debris.

Visibility dropped instantly.

Even inside the bus the storm of dust rattled the windows.

The younger boy outside covered his face with his arm, staring through the storm with wide eyes as the enormous aircraft settled onto the ground.

The roar gradually began to fade.

The rotors slowed.

The violent storm weakened into drifting clouds of dust.

For a brief moment the landing zone looked like a battlefield after an explosion.

Then the aircraft door opened.

A heavy metallic panel slid aside along the side of the VTOL.

A ramp lowered slowly toward the ground.

Several figures emerged.

Soldiers.

Not ordinary guards.

Each one moved with frightening discipline, wearing dark tactical suits layered with body armor. Their posture alone made it obvious they were elite professionals.

They stepped off the ramp and spread outward instantly, forming a defensive perimeter around the aircraft.

But the real spectacle was still coming.

Engines suddenly roared across the surrounding roads.

Black vehicles began appearing from every direction.

They poured onto the access roads like a coordinated wave.

Sleek black sedans.

Large armored SUVs.

More vehicles than anyone could count quickly.

Within seconds the entire area was surrounded.

The vehicles didn't stop randomly.

They moved with military precision, sliding into formation around the aircraft while their doors opened in synchronized motion.

More armed guards stepped out.

Rows of them.

Each one carrying the same cold discipline as the first group.

Their formation expanded outward, creating layer after layer of security around the landing site.

Inside the bus the students stared in stunned silence.

Someone whispered, "Even the President doesn't travel like this…"

The helicopters above the area continued circling slowly, their rotors cutting steady patterns through the sky.

The jet that had passed earlier roared overhead again briefly before disappearing into the distance.

Then the final figure appeared.

He stepped into the doorway of the VTOL.

For a moment he stood there, framed by the aircraft behind him while the dust continued drifting through the air.

Then he walked down the ramp.

His shoes touched the ground with quiet certainty.

The difference between him and the soldiers surrounding him was striking.

Where they moved with tension and alertness, he walked calmly.

A perfectly tailored black suit fit him flawlessly, its fabric untouched by the chaos that had surrounded the landing.

He didn't hurry.

He didn't look impressed by the massive convoy forming around him.

He simply walked forward like the entire operation existed purely for his convenience.

A woman stepped forward from one of the black sedans.

His assistant.

She held something in her hand.

Sunglasses.

He took them without breaking stride.

Then, with an effortless motion, he slid them onto his face.

The simple gesture somehow made the entire moment feel even more unreal.

The soldiers shifted instantly, forming a moving corridor around him as he approached the line of vehicles.

The engines of the sedans started simultaneously.

The convoy began rolling forward.

Rows of black cars surrounded him like a moving fortress as he walked toward the entrance of NASA headquarters.

Inside the bus no one spoke.

Dozens of students watched through the windows in complete silence.

Even the younger boy outside stood frozen beside the railing, staring at the overwhelming display of power unfolding just a short distance away.

Grace leaned closer to the glass.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Something about the way that man walked…

the calm confidence…

the effortless authority…

felt strangely familiar.

And that thought made absolutely no sense.
