June, 1993.
Harry had completed his second year at Hogwarts.
...
A desolate island perpetually shrouded in darkness.
The surrounding sea was pitch black.
This was Azkaban—the prison that made every evildoer in the wizarding world tremble.
It housed the most dangerous and vicious dark wizards.
No one wanted to be sent here. Even murderers who killed without blinking would break down and beg for mercy upon learning of their sentence to Azkaban.
The prison was guarded entirely by Dementors. No human could find it pleasant to work alongside them.
Because Dementors loved cold, damp places, the island had been enchanted so that no sunlight ever reached it.
As for the prisoners inside—needless to say.
Not that any of them would care about the warmth of the sun. More than half had already gone mad.
Dementors sucked out all the happiness from a person's mind, leaving behind only pain and despair.
Inside the prison, a Dementor drifted through the corridor, trailing a dark, misty shadow. If it sensed someone still held joyful memories, it would stop in front of the iron bars and inhale gently. The prisoner would instantly be plunged into cold—not just physical, but a soul-deep chill.
In one of the cells, a large, emaciated black dog lay curled in the corner.
Despite its bony, frail appearance, anyone looking at it would have no doubt that in a healthy state, this dog would be enormous.
A Dementor drifted past the cell. It paused, sensing something strange about the emotions inside. They weren't quite human—too simple, not complex enough.
Perhaps it was just a lunatic teetering on the edge of madness. The Dementor moved on.
Dementors had no eyes. They relied on emotions to detect humans—fear, excitement, rage...
Over the years, this wizard had discovered something vital—when he transformed into a dog, the Dementors ignored him. They weren't sensitive to animals' emotions.
The large black dog held a newspaper in its paws.
He had snatched it from Cornelius Fudge.
Today, the Minister for Magic had come to inspect the prison. He had mocked the dog-like prisoner, saying that the era of Voldemort was over and that the boy he had once tried to kill—Harry Potter—was alive and well, about to begin his third year at Hogwarts.
In a sudden burst of madness, the wizard had reached through the bars and snatched a newspaper from Fudge's hands.
Startled, Fudge thought he was under attack, but upon realizing the prisoner only wanted the newspaper, he was both embarrassed and angry at his own cowardice.
"Pah!" Fudge spat on the prisoner's matted hair. "Lunatic." Then he stormed off.
The paper itself wasn't special.
The front page told the story of a lucky Ministry employee who had won a prize—five hundred Galleons. Their family used the money to take a summer vacation in Egypt.
The front page photo showed the whole red-haired family standing in front of a golden pyramid, smiling and waving at the camera.
One of the boys held a scruffy, balding old rat.
The article mentioned that the boy was a classmate of Harry Potter and would soon be returning to Hogwarts.
The black dog clutched the photo with clawed paws, eyes filled with ferocity.
"Wormtail. Peter."
"So you're still alive..." The voice that followed was ghostly and cold, like vengeance rising from the depths of hell.
The reason this black dog had remained sane all these years was because he knew he'd been wrongfully imprisoned. That belief brought no joy—so the Dementors couldn't suck it out of him.
That thought kept him lucid. It reminded him of who he was. It preserved just enough of his magic.
Because of one mistake, one that he blamed himself for, he had lost his best friend. That guilt was why he chose not to defend himself at trial. It was his punishment.
But now—only he knew the real traitor was still alive.
He had to get to Hogwarts.
...
A few days later.
The already ragged black dog had grown even thinner.
Clang!
The prison gates opened.
Dementors floated in to distribute food, placing trays in front of each cell.
The wizard who could transform into a dog did so again. He was so emaciated now that he could squeeze through the bars.
And so, slipping through the narrow gap, he passed right under the noses of the Dementors.
One of the Dementors paused, sensing movement, and stared at him.
The dog froze, fur bristling.
But the Dementor, confused, simply took him for a small animal. It glanced once and moved on.
The black dog slipped past the gates of the prison.
He looked up at the sky, shrouded in dark clouds. For the first time in years, he felt light. This was the taste of freedom.
He didn't transform back into a human. If the Dementors detected a person escaping, they'd react instantly.
He was weak—far too weak. He had no wand. He couldn't fight back against a Dementor.
The sky above the island swarmed with them.
And yet... the black dog found himself grateful that it was only Dementors guarding the place. If it had been wizards, he would never have found a way out.
Now he ran across the island, unseen by the Dementors, who drifted as they always had.
Splash!
The dog reached the edge of the island and leapt into the frigid sea.
Still in dog form, he swam through the icy water. Starving, having not eaten for days just to thin his body enough to escape, he burned through his remaining strength.
But rage and the need for vengeance kept him going.
At last, he reached the shore.
He turned north—toward Hogwarts. That was where he would wait for Peter.
But first... he wanted to see that child. Just a glimpse.
He wasn't ready to explain things yet—to tell the boy the truth about his parents.
Because surely that child believed he was the murderer.
He'd have to capture Wormtail—Peter Pettigrew—first, before explaining everything.
And knowing Dumbledore, the old man would probably withhold the truth, keep the boy from learning that Sirius Black was his godfather.
After all, knowing that your parents were betrayed not just by a Death Eater, but by someone they trusted most... that kind of pain was unbearable.
With guilt and remorse weighing on him, the dog began his life on the streets.
