After Princess Katrina left, Queen Fortuna let out a deep breath and sighed. "I have to deal with your concubines every day. It's not easy, Karl."
"I don't understand, Fortuna. You were the one who agreed to it. You told me I could keep them," the king reminded her. It was as if she had forgotten all the times he pushed them away, the times he tried to stay faithful but she insisted otherwise.
"So now it's my fault?" Fortuna asked, her voice shaking as tears gathered in her eyes. "I should be the one to suffer alone, right?"
"Don't start, Fortuna. Tonight is not the night for this and you know it," the king said and stood up, walking away from her.
But she didn't stop. She followed him into the bedroom.
"I'm suffering, Karl. Can't you see that?" she cried. She knew what tears did to him. She knew he couldn't stand to see anyone cry. Especially not her. It always made him pause, made him soften.
