Chapter 2 - MY CRAZY BESTIE.

GEMINI.

I was still lost in my thoughts when Ohio's teasing voice snapped me back to reality. She flicked her fingers lightly against my forehead, a mischievous smirk on her face and I glared at her playfully.

"You know, I fear for your sanity whenever you space out with that goofy grin on your face. Why are you always spacing out anyway?" She asked, her eyebrows arched, clearly amused.

"Umm...excuse me? I wasn't spacing out or grinning!" I protested before swatting her hand away from my face as she tired to flick my forehead again, even then i could feel the heat creeping to my cheeks, betraying my defiance because I knew I'd indeed spaced out again.

"Oh, please!" she scoffed, rolling her eyes as if we'd had this talk a hundred times before. I scowled at her playfully, but Ohio simply rolled her eyes and settled back into her seat. She's right, I do space out a lot!

Let me properly introduce my best friend. Her name is Ohio Abigail Johnson—though never, and I mean never, call her Abigail. It's a hard no! She'll skin you alive for even thinking about it. I've had the pleasure of knowing Ohio for just two months. If you think it's crazy to be best friends with someone you've only known for just two months then you will definitely find how we became best friends even more crazy.

It was that chaotic first day of school. Where old and new students were pouring into campus and everyone was in a hurry to get somewhere. I was blissfully sipping a banana smoothie, feeling like I was on top of the world, after the Dean of my faculty informed me that my scholarship covered everything from accommodations, textbooks to monthly living expenses.

I was thinking with a little part-time job I would be able to send some money back home to my Grandma every now and then. And then bam, disaster struck! Before I knew it, someone crashed into me, sending my smoothie flying everywhere. I was temporarily blinded by the sticky mess that now covered my glasses unable to see. That was the day I decided that wearing my contact lans was always going to be a better option than my nerdy glasses.

Anyway, back to my story. I was still struggling to clean my glasses when i heard a girl's panicked voice asking me if I was okay and apologizing to me again, and again. And when I was finally able to use my eyes, I was met with the healthiest curly red hair I'd ever seen in my life—the girl's face was mortified. She was still desperately attempting to wipe the smoothie off my clothes, her striking amber eyes wide with embarrassment. Little did I know, that messy mishap would be the beginning of our crazy and wonderful friendship.

"Oh, I'm Ohio by the way!" She introduced herself a moment later, her voice matching her enthusiasm. My reaction, however, was a little more blunt.

"Who names their kid freaking Ohio?" I blurted out before I could stop myself, and to my surprise, Ohio's grin only widened.

"Right? That's exactly what I've been telling my parents! Finally, someone who gets it; we're going to be best friends!"

The confidence in her voice back then made me wonder if she was joking or slightly loony. Yet, as we laughed because of the messy smoothie situation, it felt like we had forged an unexpected bond. Ohio's words turned out to be more true than I thought; they were prophetic. Since that day, we've been inseparable, and I couldn't have been more grateful for this chaotic best friend this place had given me.

Here's the thing about us. Despite coming from different backgrounds, our friendship is what I call a mixture of brains, beauty, and stinking wealth on Ohio's part. As a non-scholarship student, Ohio is from a pretty well-off family, which should have put her in the same category as most of the snobbish non-scholarship kids I've met so far. But Ohio is completely down to earth, a breath of fresh air in this endless sea of entitlement at St. Moore.

I'd drafted back into my thoughts again, when Ohio suddenly grabbed my arm, yanking me from my seat. Her eyes sparkled with excitement.

"Come on, Gem! Let's go to the library, real quick. I need to check something!" she bubbled, practically bouncing in her feet.

Eyes wide, I waved my half-finished sandwich in her direction. "Seriously, woman! What's the rush? I haven't even finished my sandwich!" But Ohio wasn't paying attention.

I tried playing the 'I-have-to-go-to-work' card on her but it fell flat when she shot me a mischievous look.

"That's not for another thirty minutes, and this won't take long. Now, come on!" she retorted, still tugging me along.

With a resigned sigh, I waved goodbye to my precious half-eaten sandwich while letting Ohio lead me away to whatever madness awaited me in the library, knowing nothing good ever happens whenever she gets excited about something.

Don't get me wrong, I loved going to the library just as much as the next person. I spent most of my time in the library back in highschool and I do the same thing with my free time here now, especially because the library here feels like you're stepping another world. But I'm grumpy because I was trying to enjoy a delicious sandwich before my shift at the store-that place is bigger than the biggest shopping mall in my hometown, I don't know why they call it a store. Then, again it's on St. Moore campus so I don't know what to say.

Anyway, what does my crazy best friend want from the library that can't wait for me to finish my sandwich?

The moment we made it into the huge library, Ohio disappeared from my sight probably going to look for whatever made her drag me here and I sighed running my hand through my hair before deciding to look around too.

I was already here, it wouldn't hurt to find some new books to keep me busy, right?
