Chapter 8 - The Aquindall Inheritance: A Gift or a Curse?

Mom walked in and gasped at seeing Vyn standing next to me. With Mom and Vyn's secret all exposed to me now, I felt like I had an advantage to do whatever I pleased.

Vyn walked towards the window to leave, "Vyn, stay!" I said. Mom said nothing, and I let out a frustrated sigh before sitting on my bed with my hands covering my face.

"How long do we have to wait for her to get used to her powers?" Vyn asked Mom as I turned my gaze to her.

"A year" Mom's answer struck a chord inside me, "A year? What are my powers all about anyway, is it that difficult to harness?" I asked in curiosity.

Mom paused to look at me. "Well, you were chosen after all. You have the powers of the sea dragon—Aquindall, and the king I murdered years ago—Aldent Peirce sealed the dragon in an unknown place underwater...I had you in my womb at that point, so he transferred Aquindall's powers to you." Mom paused again.

I was stunned and bewildered, all that had happened because of Mom, "I'm sure Peirce hated you so much and had to curse me with Aquindall's powers, I wasn't chosen" I muttered angrily.

Mom went on "Your abilities allow you to control any liquid, but water is where your true potential lies, you have a five-minute foresight ability and have access to the scale shield, you also need to learn how to use the Aquilus swords and learn Aquindall's techniques as well and all this requires, focus, practice and mastery" Mom came to a stop.

"And that's why it's going to take a long time" I concluded.

I looked at Vyn who was staring right back at me, "Do you need to say something?" I asked, he nodded, indicating that nothing was on his mind.

"You'll help me with my powers," I said to Vyn and then turned to Mom, "And you'll help me practice with the Aquilus swords".

I stood up, took a deep breath, and exhaled, knowing I was beginning with something serious.

Mom and Vyn knew the look on my face, it was a sign that I wasn't going to back out of this. "Would I need to skip school at any point?" I asked Mom.

She snapped, "No! Even if a stage does require so much time, you will not! You need to at least think about your ordinary life!"

I was annoyed and I knew what she said was true but still, "I'm not going to stand back Mom, while that murderer is still out there! And what ordinary life are you even talking about? When you ruined my life even before I was born! Why did you and Dad even make a deal with Acanthus anyway?!"

Mom crossed her arms, feeling frustrated, "That isn't something you should know at this time, focus on your powers instead" She walked towards the door, "It starts tomorrow" She added before she left, slamming the door shut.

My anger was only ignited as I sat on the bed and hit the bedside so hard that my index finger began to bleed.

Vyn got on his knees and took my injured hand in his without hesitation and he began to chant a few words which I didn't understand.

Hoping to do something magical but it didn't work, he was taken aback by this, he tried several times but his magic didn't seem to work on me.

I pulled my hand away, "Whatever you're trying to do, it's not working" I suddenly felt a cold sensation on my finger, I took a look at it and was bewildered by what I saw.

My wound was covered in dragon-like scales, they reflected in the light, pale shimmering blue before disappearing.

The spot where I was wounded was now healed and refined. Vyn began to laugh.

I shifted my gaze to him, his laughter reminded me of the happy times we spent with each other but I hid my smile in a frown, "What's so funny?" as soon as I asked, he stopped.

"Sorry, seeing your face like that, your reaction was priceless, you just unlocked a new ability, I guess that's why magic didn't work", he said.

I looked at my finger again and then back at him, "So what ability is this then?" I asked.

Vyn sat next to me, "Well, it's a healing ability but may also be used as an internal shield".

His gaze drifted from my hand to my face, locking onto mine.

"What?" I asked, trying to sound casual but I felt my face get hot.

He leaned in "Want to know a little secret? I broke up with Tracy"

I was silent for a moment 'Is that good or bad?' I thought to myself.

"But why?" I asked him, Vyn leaned in closer, filling the space between us, and he wrapped his arms around my waist, "You and I both know I've liked you since we met"

I felt my heart skip a beat, and without letting a second pass by, Vyn's lips touched mine and we were wrapped together.

I felt a shiver down my spine as explored my thigh with his hand.

It was a feeling that I never wanted it to end.

After a while, we both pulled away to catch our breath, our eyes locked on each other. I felt my face flush as I pulled away completely from him.

He let out a small laugh "Why are you so embarrassed? Don't you like it?" He asked.

I sighed, "You're acting like you just did nothing".

Vyn had a smirk on his face, "That was nothing, really? I know what's on your mind" He said as I felt my stomach flipped.

I realised what he meant, "Y...you know that...wasn't what I meant" I stuttered as I immediately hid under my blanket. "You idiot" I muttered but he remained silent. He didn't go on further about it when he knew I wasn't comfortable.
