"I said the preliminary tests did not reveal known toxins. Unknown does not automatically mean safe."
Mo Shian looked at Weiwei pointedly.
She ignored him.
"Did you find anything else?" she asked Gu Yan.
"The sample's thermal behaviour is unusual. It absorbs heat rapidly but releases it very slowly. That could explain why the stone felt warm."
"What about the visions?"
"A mineral does not normally create matching hallucinations in two people."
"Normally?" Mo Shian repeated.
"I have learned not to use the word impossible around the two of you."
Gu Yan sounded tired.
He had probably spent most of the night inside his laboratory.
"Bring another small sample later," he continued. "Preferably one containing part of the red or golden veins."
"No," Weiwei answered immediately.
"Why?"
"The veins are part of the pendant."
"You value a pendant more than medical research?"
"It is a gift for my husband."
Gu Yan became silent.
