Xia Weiwei could hear voices around her.
They sounded distant at first, as though several people were speaking from the other side of a river.
Slowly, the voices became clearer.
"Her temperature is thirty-eight point nine," Gu Yan said. "It is still high, but no longer immediately dangerous."
"Why hasn't she woken up?" Mo Shian asked.
"Her body has been under tremendous stress. Give her time."
"How much time?"
"I don't know, Mo Shian. Human beings do not come with timers."
Weiwei wanted to smile.
Even while unconscious, she could recognize Gu Yan's exasperated tone. Mo Shian must have been making his life difficult again.
She tried to open her eyes.
Her eyelids felt heavy, but after several attempts, she managed to lift them.
The bedroom ceiling appeared blurry.
"Weiwei?"
Mo Shian's voice sounded directly beside her.
She turned her head.
He was sitting on the bed, holding one of her hands. His face was pale, and the fear inside his blue eyes made her heart ache.
