Sarah pulled away just enough to hold my face in her hands. "What about Olivia? The kids? Are they safe? Are you safe?"
I nodded slowly, not trusting my voice.
Her eyes scanned me like she needed to memorize my face all over again. "I tried to visit yesterday. They wouldn't let me through."
Ash's voice cut in gently from beside me. "That was on us."
Sarah turned toward her, wary.
Ash stepped forward, her tone calm and cool. "Security precautions. There were too many variables we couldn't control. We had to limit access for everyone's safety."
Sarah gave a short, sharp nod. "Fine. But an explanation would've been nice."
Ash blinked. "Duly noted."
I almost laughed at their dynamic... Sarah, a hurricane of heart, and Ash, composed like a queen who only let loose behind closed doors. They couldn't have been more different. But in that moment, both of them… were mine.
Sort of.
I turned back to Sarah. "I missed you."
