Long story short,Joey's dad was completely wasted and furious.
Apparently, Joey's parents were drowning in debt and were afraid they'd lose their house. One of his dad's friends was a Gamma in another pack, and that Gamma's daughter had always had a crush on Joey even though she was four years older.
When her mate unexpectedly died just a couple of weeks after they met, her father was desperate to make her feel better. So, the Gamma offered Joey's parents enough money to pay off their mortgage on the condition that Joey agreed to marry his daughter.
Joey wasn't even 18 yet. He was in love with Jessica and convinced she would be his mate one day. He thought his dad's plan was absolutely insane and refused to marry anyone but Jessica.
I know all this because when I got there, his dad was shouting the whole story in rage.
