The leather seats of Bernard's car felt cold against their rain-dampened clothes. Bernard drove in silence through the empty streets, the city lights blurring past the windows like tears on glass. In the backseat, Lily sat between Daniel and Mily, while Calvin occupied the front passenger seat, his jaw tight with tension.
"Bernard, where are we going?" Lily finally asked.
"Somewhere safe. Somewhere we can talk without being overheard." Bernard's eyes met hers in the rearview mirror. "Your father sent me to find you. All of you."
"Dad's awake?"
"More than awake. Furious." Bernard turned onto a quiet side street. "He figured out who's been playing puppet master with your lives."
Calvin turned in his seat. "Who?"
"Your uncle Marcus."
The name hit Lily like a physical blow. Marcus Martinez, her father's younger brother, the company's CFO, the man who'd taught her to ride a bike and helped her with her science fair projects.
"That's impossible," she whispered.
