Chapter 38 - War Room

It was a massive room. There were dozens of torches all across the walls, but only Sin's torch gave light.

The room was made of stone, long and preserved with several stone pillars.

Resting all throughout the ground were tens of caskets--much smaller than the one that the king's guard came out of--but still dozens of them.

Sin's brows furrowed, 'That last ogre was an undead. I'm sure of it now. And this place that I have entered must be a grave site.'

He surveyed the room from where he stood, making sure not to make any sudden movements.

After noticing nothing was amiss, Sin calmly took a step back and closed the door.

Then, he turned to face the door on his left and opened it.

Inside, he saw the same thing.

He opened another and saw the same, and then another. His speed increased as he continued opening doors and seeing dozens of caskets.

By 10 minutes, he had looked into every door and had seen over a thousand caskets without a doubt.

The end of the hallway opened up to a small circular room. The ceiling was barely 15 feet tall, and the room itself was about 30 feet in total diameter.

At the center was a large pedestal holding up what looked to be a large map carved out of a flat piece of stone.

Sin walked to the other side of the pedestal--facing the eerie hallway he just made his way through and looking down at the map.

His eyelids widened slightly, "A map of the dungeon." He muttered, in slight awe.

This dungeon was absolutely gargantuan. And clearly, this map was one made for the purpose of war, not peace.

It marked all seemingly dangerous and lower locations with attack or retreat markers.

It also had chess-piece-like ogres made out of stone placed in certain areas as well.

It even mapped out some of the underwater territory that Sin had seen in the original depiction room.

Also, there were multiple buttons in each area, which Sin didn't know what to make of.

'From what I can tell,' Sin looked around--taking note of details that stood out around the room.

There were slight divots in the ground--clearly from ogres standing there--all around the map pedestal.

'The smartest warriors and strategists must have gathered here to plan their attacks against the aquatic beasts. But why here at the end of the graves? Aren't the graves supposed to be made after the war is already over?'

He pondered this for a second, 'No... it could also be that the ogres were already expecting to lose many lives, including their own. They might have even expected to potentially lose. So then it makes sense. They made these graves while the battle was ongoing. They buried soldiers while other soldiers fought for their honor. And most of all, the Spirits of their fallen brothers must have given them a raging clarity, that must be why they chose to make this place the strategy room and not any other...'

After squinting his eyes, he located where he was on the map. It was fairly simple, since all he had to do was retrace his movements.

After finding the strategy room he was in, he clicked on the button beside the room.

Each area had its own button, so Sin wanted to first safely press the button in his own area before experimenting.

As soon as he pressed the button, Sin heard a low whistle coming from a certain direction.

Suddenly, a purple energy poured in through the dark hallway that Sin was facing and absorbed into the map.

Then, the map changed and was replaced with what looked to be a reflective surface of water.

Inside of the water, he saw himself from a third-person perspective, as if he was looking at himself. He could even hear himself in the reflection, as if he was watching himself live on TV.

'The energy of the dead... some powerful shaman ogre must have made this contraption.' Sin mused, impressed with the level of technology he was witnessing.

'With this, I may be able to find out where Kael and the others are again. Then, I can simply follow this map to their location.'

Sin began to retrace his footsteps again, arriving back to the area before he and the others jumped into the hidden hole.

There, he found the lower floors. There were only 2 exits from that hole--the main entrance which was at a very low floor, or the hidden exit that Sin stumbled upon for some reason.

Even though there was only a single possible route Kael and the others could have gone initially, the path quickly split up multiple times into different rooms down there.

It was almost like a labyrinth, so Sin was automatically not enthusiastic about finding everyone.

Still, he had to try. Starting from the room where everyone else dropped, Sin began pressing buttons to all close connecting rooms.

Eventually, he saw some movements in the reflective panel before him.

'Oh?'

He saw a head of gray hair, immediately recognizing Kael. His eyes widened, slightly relieved.

Looking around, Kael seemed to be walking behind Agneil and his two guards. Other than them, however, no one else was present.

'Damn... so they got split up from the others then huh? I wonder why.'

For a split second, Sin felt an ominous feeling creep within him again. It was the same intuitive worry he had before jumping down the hole.

To relieve himself of this extra fear, he squinted his eyes and surveyed Kael and the others a little closer.

Kael had a large red gash across his left cheek. Other than that, Agneil and his guards looked totally fine.

'This dungeon isn't a normal one... they called it corrupted right? So I guess that explains why even Kael is injured. But damn... Kael is far stronger than even me. I can just tell from his movements in battle. If he could get injured like that, I need to be more cautious of what's down there.'
