Chapter 502: Pain's Assault
The equipment of the attackers was hard to classify as either advanced or backward.
Instead of traditional kunai and shuriken, a bunch of ninja were using a device that could be called a kunai launcher. It was shaped somewhat like a rifle. When the trigger was pulled, the chakra propeller in the chamber was activated, launching a continuous stream of kunai.
The advantage was that it saved effort. After all, throwing a kunai with your arm consumed more stamina than pulling a trigger.
The disadvantage was that the kunai thrown this way had no soul! Even Ino thought it looked ugly! Look at the Uchiha clan's throwing techniques, so artistic. What was this? You pull a trigger and just "rat-a-tat-tat" kunai?
Aoba Yamashiro, who was in charge of intelligence, quickly sent over a message. "The enemy are Sky Ninja, a group of ninja without a village. They have always been hostile to the five great villages. I didn't expect these guys to still be alive."
Konoha was very experienced in dealing with attacks. Ino's Sensory Division took over most of the command, deploying troops and handling everything in an orderly manner.
Tendo Pain's Rinnegan looked at Konoha's sky and underground.
The Konoha Sensory Division had set up more than five defensive barriers in the village. In the Rinnegan's vision, there were barrier talismans with the character for "barrier" written on them everywhere. It was an impossible task to enter without being detected.
Tendo Pain used his Rinnegan and the super-sick Hayate Gekkō as a key to deceive the sensory barrier and walked right in.
The Six Paths of Pain entered the village, knocked out Hayate, and split up.
The Human and Animal Paths went to find the Seven-Tails and Nine-Tails jinchuriki.
The Sky Ninja's attack was being held back by Ino in the south of the village; the north was not much affected.
Tendo Pain, controlled by Nagato, wandered alone through the streets of Konoha.
As he walked, he came to the front of Ichiraku Ramen.
He had heard of this place and knew it was a famous ramen shop.
Tendo Pain sat quietly in the shadows behind the ramen shop for a while. When he got up and walked out of the darkness, he came face to face with Naruto, who was treating Konohamaru's team to ramen.
"The Nine-Tails jinchuriki?" Tendo Pain asked flatly.
This was the first time Naruto had seen the Rinnegan. The indifference in the other's eyes was beyond his comprehension. The Rinnegan's suppression of the Nine-Tails also affected him as the jinchuriki.
"You? Who are you?" Naruto was no fool. He knew the other had ill intentions. He used the question as an opportunity to block Konohamaru and his team.
"Run! Quick! Go get the Pervy Sage and Ino!" Naruto formed the "Boar" seal and created a large number of shadow clones, surrounding Tendo Pain. Then he signaled for Konohamaru and his team to run.
At the same time as Tendo Pain appeared, the other five Paths also began to act.
The new versions of the Asura, Preta, and Naraka Paths were not as easy to use as the old ones.
The black rods Nagato had were indeed created out of thin air by the Rinnegan's ability, but creating them was not without cost. Nagato had to accurately calculate the little life force he had left and couldn't just create black rods wantonly.
The number of black rods was small, which meant the control over the new three Paths was not as smooth as the old ones.
The Preta Path's ability to absorb chakra and the Naraka Path's ability to summon the King of Hell both originated from the Rinnegan, so there wasn't much loss in that respect.
The Asura Path had suffered the greatest loss.
The old Asura Path's missiles, lasers, and strange brute strength were all abilities granted by its puppetry modification, not from the Rinnegan. That had been done with Sasori's help when he was still alive. Where was Nagato supposed to find Sasori now? The new Asura Path didn't have these puppet abilities and could only wield two swords, making it an ordinary Path.
With Tendo confronting Naruto, the only remaining old-version Paths of Pain were the Human Path, which extracted souls to read information, and the Animal Path, which specialized in summoning.
The Human Path only had single-target attack capabilities. He occasionally attacked Konoha ninja, trying to find the whereabouts of the Seven-Tails jinchuriki.
The Animal Path caused the most destruction. He continuously used summoning jutsu, summoning the giant crab that used Water Release, the infinitely multiplying dog, the giant bird that dropped explosive eggs, and a thirty-meter-tall, muscular rhino.
The giant summoning beasts appeared abruptly in Konoha, and in various locations, causing civilian casualties in the first moments.
Ino immediately notified Jiraiya. "Lord Hokage, Pain has appeared. The six of them are in Sector B-2, D-5, D-9, five o'clock direction from the hospital, seven o'clock direction from the Analysis Division, and in front of Ichiraku Ramen."
"Where is the one that looks like Yahiko?"
"In front of Ichiraku Ramen. Naruto is also there."
"I understand." Jiraiya put on his Hokage hat, strode out of the building, and went to face Tendo Pain himself.
With the arrival of the Six Paths of Pain, the Sky Ninja became even more audacious. They intensified their attacks, and numerous Sky Ninja on gliders entered Konoha's airspace.
Ino was a bit flustered trying to command everything. Precisely eliminating every enemy was a very difficult task for the Sensory Division.
She had no choice but to pull Shikamaru in to help her micromanage!
"Asuma-sensei, move five meters to the left, look at your three o'clock."
"Shino? Is that you, Shino? There are two enemies in the tree behind you."
"Anko, there are seven enemies to your left rear. Fifteen meters to your right, there's one enemy."
"Almighty Push!" Tendo Pain waved his hand and eliminated more than two hundred of Naruto's shadow clones.
Naruto couldn't figure out the principle behind the enemy's move and could only use shadow clones and the Rasengan to fight back.
"Idiot!" Sasuke charged out from the side, his short sword stabbing fiercely at Tendo Pain's heart.
Almighty Push, like Obito's Kamui, couldn't be used continuously; it had a cooldown time.
Sasuke had timed his attack perfectly, striking in the interval when Tendo Pain couldn't use Almighty Push.
He infused his short sword with Lightning Release chakra, and it emitted a sharp hum. The blade shot out, fast, accurate, and ruthless.
For Sasuke, it had been less than half a day since Itachi's death. His mind was a blank slate; he hadn't yet figured out his place.
He didn't care about the other villagers, but Naruto, he truly cared about. Helping the seemingly foolish Naruto fight Tendo Pain was Sasuke's choice.
"Sasuke!" Naruto was fighting alongside Sasuke again, and his heart was overflowing with joy.
"Itachi's younger brother? Boy, it's a bit early for you to be participating in a battle of this level." Tendo Pain sidestepped the Chidori Blade, raised his palm, and activated Universal Pull.
This was the first time Sasuke had seen such a bizarre move. He stabbed his sword into a nearby stone wall to anchor himself, but his body was still pulled toward Tendo Pain by the gravitational force.
