Chapter 501: The Second Wave of Attacks
Tsunade gave her a thumbs-up. "You're still our village belle, you know. You have to get better soon!"
Koharu was dizzy and didn't understand the meaning of "village belle" at first. The strange word spun around in her head a couple of times before she finally understood.
"What an ugly word. Village belle? Who came up with such a stupid nickname?" She observed Tsunade's expression and feigned a look of realization. "No need to say it. It must have been your precious disciple who said it behind my back, right? Hehe..."
The old woman gritted her teeth. Dare to call me "village belle"? This isn't over. We'll have to have a good talk about this later.
While the old woman and Hinata were unconscious, Ino's Sensory, Analysis, and Interrogation Divisions had all been deployed. The matter had been thoroughly investigated.
At the critical moment, Koharu had killed the old stonemason, pushed Hinata away, and thrown herself forward to seal most of the explosive tags, ultimately preventing a crisis that would have engulfed the entire village.
Now, only the back mountain, the Hokage Rock, and a few surrounding houses had been blown up. The losses were not too great.
The old stonemason killed by Koharu was named Gennō, a former ninja from the Kagerō Village in the Land of Mountains. The ninja of this village were skilled at making explosive tags. As a result, they were targeted by the great ninja villages during the Second Great Ninja War. Their tag-making techniques were stolen, and most of the ninja in the village were slaughtered.
This wasn't just Konoha's fault; other ninja villages had also taken action to strengthen their military capabilities. But Konoha was a big tree that attracted the wind. Gennō, as a survivor from back then, had directed his hatred toward Konoha.
He had spent thirty years, occasionally taking on jobs in Konoha, secretly setting up his plan.
He had originally needed to make many more preparations, but a short while ago, Akatsuki had approached him and provided him with a large amount of funds and explosive tags. With more resources at his disposal, the old stonemason lost his former meticulousness, which was why he had been discovered by Hinata, and his plan had ultimately failed.
The incident report reached Jiraiya's hands. The Fifth Hokage rubbed his head in frustration.
Heaven knows, he had never even heard of this Kagerō Village in the Land of Mountains. This mess was probably from the Third Hokage's youth, or maybe even the Second Hokage's time. Now, he was the one taking the blame. It was truly unfair.
Ino gathered a large number of Hyuga ninja and conducted a carpet search of the entire village.
A large number of deeply buried explosive tags were dug up. Ninja were experts at destruction. Trying to remove a paper tag without damaging the building? That was a bit difficult.
Gennō had buried too many explosive tags. More than three thousand ninja in the village worked for a whole night and dug up a total of eighteen thousand explosive tags. Some of the tags had been buried for so long that they had fused with the environment. There was nothing to be done but to demolish the buildings along with them!
Gennō's explosive tags would have at most collapsed the back mountain and the buildings near it. The Konoha ninja, in their own home demolition, had knocked down houses, torn up roads, and left their homes in a mess. At a glance, you would believe it if someone told you it was a ruin.
The first day of the Chunin Exams had been extremely eventful.
Itachi Uchiha died, Gennō created a massive explosion that endangered the entire village, and the village's Hokage Rock was completely turned to rubble.
Ino was busy for a whole night and only finished the search mission at dawn.
Thinking of Hinata being hospitalized, she decided to go to the market to buy some vegetables to make soup for her later.
As she was thinking, she suddenly felt something abruptly break through the Konoha Sensory Division's barrier, interrupting her thoughts.
Who? Who's attacking Konoha?
Konoha in the early morning was not quiet. Many villagers and ninja had been busy all night, and the streets were full of people.
Ino looked up at the sky.
At first, she thought the rice carrier had arrived. But upon closer inspection, she realized it wasn't him.
A massive figure emerged from the dark clouds. A huge artificial structure was flying rapidly toward Konoha from the south.
"What the hell is that thing?!" Ino couldn't be bothered with soup anymore. She used the Flying Thunder God Technique to teleport back to her Sensory Division.
Seeing her appear, the ninja of the Sensory Division called out to her in various ways.
Some were her father's subordinates, so they called her "Miss Yamanaka." Some were ninja who had joined after the Sensory Division was established, so they naturally called her "Chief." And some were from the Yamanaka clan, who calmly called her "Clan Head."
The titles were different, but they were all referring to the same person.
Ino was polite and greeted them one by one.
Tobitake Tonbo and Mawashi Dōgoma, who had once been Inoichi's subordinates and were now Ino's, quickly reported the situation to her.
"In Sector A-3, a huge object has appeared in the southeast!"
"It's moving very fast. It's expected to enter the main urban area in three minutes!"
Ino connected to the Sensory Division's machine. The view was much clearer now. In the night sky, there was a saucer-shaped stone structure. Steam billowed from within, and on the front of the structure, there was a runway. From time to time, small, ant-like ninja would launch from the runway with the help of technological devices and fly rapidly toward Konoha.
"The timing is so perfect. Gennō's chain explosion must have been the first wave of attacks, and these guys are the second wave. Notify A-5 and A-17, target the sky in the southeast, and open fire!"
Konoha had captured a relatively intact Cloud Village chakra cannon on the battlefield. They couldn't innovate, but they could copy.
Now that the village was holding the joint Chunin Exams of the five villages, the higher-ups generally believed that there would be trouble! So, they had deployed cannons at several key locations in the village. If the enemy dared to come, they would blast them to hell!
Ino's Sensory Division didn't directly control the cannons, but she had the right to make suggestions. Fourteen seconds after she gave the order, the cannon at A-5 fired first!
With a loud boom, the surface-to-air shot missed.
After A-5 fired, the cannon at A-17 also activated.
The village's alarms blared nonstop. Well-trained ninja immediately took up their battle positions, while some second-line ninja helped to evacuate the civilians.
The enemy's sky fortress hovered at the edge of the Konoha Sensory Division's range. Only two of Konoha's chakra cannons could reach it, but the attack angle was poor, and most of the shells fell into empty space.
"The enemy has deployed more air forces!" Tobitake Tonbo shouted anxiously, wearing a receiver that looked like a large pot.
"Don't worry. Pass on my orders." Ino's target had always been the rice carrier. She didn't care about these enemies who had appeared out of nowhere.
"Neji Hyuga, lead your team to the shop at the ten o'clock position. There are two enemies there."
"Genma's team, seven o'clock position. An enemy squad will land in ten seconds."
"ANBU Team 3, go protect the Hokage and the advisors."
Ino issued her commands in an orderly manner.
The enemy ninja, as if controlling some kind of glider, continuously launched from the runway of the sky fortress, launching a surprise attack on Konoha from the air.
