Jamal leaned forward, resting his arms on his knees. Dawn's smile faded as she turned her attention to Tom.
"What happened?" Jamal asked. "Did you find out who was behind the attempt on Genny's life?"
Tom nodded. "We did."
He picked up a file from his desk and opened it.
"Ryan was the one who ordered his man to get rid of whichever one of you came to see to his will."
Dawn blinked. "Wait. What?"
Tom looked at her.
"He gave the order before he died. He wanted his man to make sure that either you or Genevieve was taken out of the picture. But he seemed very sure Genevieve would be the one."
Dawn stared at him.
For a moment, she could not speak. Her fingers curled around the edge of the chair.
"Is there no end to his cruelty?" she asked at last. "Even after he was dead, he was still trying to hurt us?"
Tom gave a slow nod. "That seems to be the case."
Dawn shook her head, still trying to take it in.
