Chapter 281 - Chapter 281: Mew – Divergence

"Mew~!"

Mew let out a delighted giggle, daintily covering its mouth as its tiny body flipped effortlessly through the air, unbound by gravity.

"Eeno~!"

Seeing Mew like this so endearing and playful, Froslass couldn't help herself. She floated up to the Mythical Pokémon and pulled it into an affectionate hug, gently squishing its chubby cheeks.

"Mew?"

Startled, Mew blinked its large eyes for a brief moment before realizing what had happened. Then, with a mischievous smile, it Teleported behind Froslass in a blink of light—and in the same instant, its body shimmered and transformed into Lugia, effortlessly grabbing Froslass in a reverse grip like a plush toy.

The tables had turned. Froslass, still wrapped in the gentle yet overwhelming presence of the transformed Mew, looked helpless and exasperated. The aura radiating from Lugia was so commanding that she could hardly summon the will to struggle.

Thankfully, Mew meant no harm. A few seconds later, it reverted to its true form, gently waved its tiny hand and in a flash, Paul, his Pokémon, and Froslass were all vanished from the spot.

When they reappeared, they were standing high atop the Tree of Beginning.

"Vireee~!"

"Gaaaar~!"

"…"

It was their first time being whisked away by Teleport, and the expressions on the faces of Paul's Pokémon betrayed their surprise as they looked around the surroundings.

Despite its name, the Tree of Beginning wasn't a tree in the traditional sense. Standing atop it felt no different than standing on the flat crest of a mountain. The only distinction lay in its structure—this colossal formation resembled a tree, but it was in fact a living geological phenomenon.

Looking inward toward the heart of the "tree," exposed crystals shimmered on the surface. Inside one of its many cavernous chambers, a pile of colorful toys, dozens of them lay scattered. It was clearly Mew's hidden treasure trove.

Gazing outward, they could see for miles. The entire domain of the Tree of Beginning lay visible beneath them. Far off in the distance stood Cameran Palace in the heart of Rota, the ancient castle that had watched over the land for centuries.

"Mew~"

With a playful hum, Mew floated over to its stash and started rummaging around. After a few moments of spirited digging, it emerged triumphantly with three well-preserved lollipops, treasures it had apparently hoarded for a long time. Peeling one of the wrappers with great care, it popped the candy into its mouth, savoring it with a look of bliss.

After enjoying a few sweet seconds, Mew zipped over to Froslass and offered her the second lollipop.

"Eeno~?"

Surprised, Froslass accepted the treat and imitating Mew's manner, placed the lollipop in her mouth, curious about the flavor.

"Mew~!"

Mew giggled gleefully at the sight.

But when it came to the final lollipop… Mew hesitated.

There were so many Pokémon around—who should get it? No choice felt quite right. Besides, a few of them didn't exactly seem too fond of Mew.

After letting its gaze wander for a bit, Mew's eyes settled on someone unexpected: the stoic human standing silently beside the gentle Torterra—Paul.

"Mew~!"

Floating cheerfully to Paul's side, the ever-eager Mew extended its paw, offering him a lollipop.

"…Not interested. You eat it."

Paul stared at the adorable creature in silence for a couple of seconds before replying in his usual calm, composed tone.

"Mew~!"

Mew wasn't buying it. It floated a little higher, undeterred, and nudged the treat even closer to Paul's mouth, its wide sparkling eyes fixed on him like a child stubbornly waiting for praise.

Their eyes met. The air turned still.

"Vireee~!"

Not eating it, huh? Picky eater, are we? Fine, then—I'll take it!

Electivire boldly stepped forward, laughing heartily as it walk toward Mew.

"Ah—wah!!"

A split second later, the world spun upside down for Electivire—Mew had casually threw him right off the Tree of Beginning. He plummeted like a boulder in free fall.

Thankfully, its Motor Drive kicked in just in time, and Electivire halted midair with a jolt, floating steadily via electromagnetism.

"Siiigh~"

C'mon, I was just trying to lighten the mood... If you won't let me have it, fine.

Shaking its head with an exaggerated sigh, Electivire started flying back up toward the massive tree—only to freeze mid-flight.

It could feel it, multiple gazes locking onto it all at once.

Following his instincts, Electivire slowly looked around… and spotted them. Scattered across various tiers and branches of the Tree of Beginning were several Regi Pokémon—Regirock, Regice, Registeel, and perhaps even more. Each one stared calmly, yet exuded an intimidating aura on par with Cynthia's Garchomp.

"Vireee~!"

Just passing by! Yep, totally just passing through! I'll be going now!

Even a single Regi was a handful for Electivire—facing this many at once? No thanks.

Just as he was about to bail, Electivire felt the unmistakable sensation of several targeting locks aimed straight at him.

Welp. No point running. Might as well surrender.

In an instant, Electivire threw both arms into the air, completely surrendering on the spot.

Thus, under the enthusiastic "invitation" of the Regi guardians, Electivire was ushered into the Tree of Beginning from a less direct route. Surprisingly, he ended up getting along quite well with them—playing games, roaring with laughter, and having the time of his life.

Up above still floating beside Paul, Mew's persistence finally paid off. With a resigned sigh, Paul accepted the lollipop and popped it into his mouth.

"Mew~!"

Seeing Paul finally accept her gift, Mew beamed with pure joy—her previously darkening aura vanished in an instant.

"Ahem, ahem~"

But Paul's face turned a bit red, and he let out a couple of awkward coughs.

It wasn't from emotion.

Turns out, the lollipop Mew had been cherishing all this time… was wasabi flavored.

Paul hadn't realized it right away—and got a sharp surprise.

"Mew~!"

Overhead, Mew was rolling through the air, giggling so hard it held its belly in delight.

"Why did you bring us over here?"

Paul, having recovered his composure, turned to ask.

"Mew~"

Mew shook its head and summoned one of its floating toys with a flick of its paw. The toy hovered in front of Paul's Pokémon, as if inviting them to come and play.

The intent was pure, but Paul's Pokémon showed zero interest in Mew's little toys. They all shook their heads in rejection.

To them, playing with toys held no appeal—they'd rather polish their skills or take a good nap.

"Mew…"

Seeing its beloved toys coldly rejected, Mew's smile faded. Pouting, it floated off to the side and conjured a soft pink bubble, curling up on top of it with a sulk.

"They prefer battling." Paul offered. "You could play with them that way."

"Mew?"

Mew glanced up at him.

Battle? Sure, it liked battling… but the power gap was too big.

None of Paul's Pokémon could withstand even one of its hits. It couldn't just spend the whole time dodging—it'd get boring real fast.

"You could use Substitute and Double Team. With your powers, creating a few doppelgangers with strength on par with my team shouldn't be an issue."

Paul remembered the Mew from Journeys—that one had split into two and turned into Groudon and Kyogre to spar with the others on the Mew team.

Given the immense power of the Mew before him, pulling off similar transformations shouldn't be a problem.

"Mew!"

Mew's eyes lit up. As the ancestor of all Pokémon and a being symbiotic with the Tree of Beginning, it was unmatched in the art of transformation.

Paul's suggestion had opened a new door for it. Floating there, Mew put a paw under its chin and pondered how best to craft these doubles.

Then, in a sudden flash of white light, it split.

Into six.

It hadn't used Double Team. It literally divided into six fully-formed Mew.

"Mew~!"

The six Mew waved their tiny hands in unison. In a blink, Paul and all his Pokémon vanished from their perch on the Tree of Beginning.

They reappeared within a vast, open plain deep inside the Tree itself.

Paul glanced around. The architecture here resembled a coliseum or battlefield—an enormous space, clearly designed for combat.

Surrounding the arena were six raised stone platforms, each with a dormant pillar of different color standing silently atop it.

They looked like… Regi Pillars that had not yet awakened.
