LIE Studios | Soundstage 4.
The filming of Batman's second chapter is ongoing, but the release of the [Kung Fu Panda: Part I] neared in two days.
The highly anticipated 3D animated feature had already taken the internet by storm, especially after Regal's brilliant, trolling 'watermelon splat' trailer that mocked Pixy Studios' moral panic.
But what the public was truly losing their minds over wasn't just the animation quality from Unique FX.
It was the voice cast.
When Regal first pitched the animated film to his team, he never intended to assemble a cast of traditional A-list voice actors.
Instead, he turned to the creative family he had already built around him.

[Later That Afternoon]
[LIE Studios | Soundstage 2 - Promotional Press Junket]
The setup was a familiar, comfortable semicircle of plush armchairs.
Claire Weston, the seasoned journalist who had famously conducted the viral [John Wick] interview, was back.
But this time, the couch across from her looked like a glitch in the cinematic matrix.
Sitting shoulder-to-shoulder were Andrew Garfield, Robert Downey Jr., Ross Oakley, and Grace Violet.
Between the four of them, they represented [Spider-Man], [Iron Man], [Albus Dumbledore], and the breakout star of [Following].
They were the undisputed heavyweights of the current Hollywood landscape.
And they were all here to talk about a cartoon panda.
"I have to say." Claire began, smiling widely as the cameras rolled. "Looking at this lineup, I feel like I am hosting a crossover event for the MDCU and Harry Potter. But we aren't here to talk about superheroes or magic. We are here because, in two days, the world is going to hear you all play martial arts animals. And the internet is entirely baffled by how Regal pulled this off."
RDJ leaned back, adjusting his tinted glasses with a trademark smirk. "Claire, let's be honest. If Regal Seraphsail asks you to voice a noodle-slurping animal, you don't ask why. You just ask what flavor the noodles are."
The room erupted into laughter.
Claire turned to Andrew, who was grinning ear-to-ear. "Andrew, let's start with you. You are playing Po, the titular Panda. And what most people don't realize is that this is actually a massive full-circle moment for you, isn't it?"
Andrew chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck in that humble, slightly self-deprecating way that made audiences adore him.
"It really is." Andrew said, his eyes bright. "A lot of people think [Spider-Man] was my first interaction with Regal. But actually, before Peter Parker, before any of the live-action stuff, I was working as a voice actor. My uncle is Zack Barg, Regal's lead editor. When Regal was casting for the Shinigami, Ryuk, in [Death Note], Zack brought me in."
Claire gasped. "Wait, you auditioned for Ryuk?"
"I did!" Andrew laughed. "And I failed miserably. Regal sat behind the glass, listened to me try to sound like a terrifying, apple-eating god of death, and he just shook his head. He said my voice was too human, and energetic. So Peter Cullen got the role, which, obviously, was the right call."
Andrew gestured to himself. "So I thought my voice acting days were over. Then [Spider-Man] happens. I am swinging from skyscrapers, doing wire work, feeling like I have finally made it as a dramatic, physical actor. And what happens? Regal calls me into his office, slides a concept sketch of a severely overweight panda across the desk, and says, 'Andrew, it's time to go back to your roots.'"
"He really said that?" Claire asked, laughing.
"He did!" Andrew grinned. "And the funniest part is, it was the hardest role I have ever done. Recording in a booth for hours, trying to convey all this physical comedy, the exhaustion of climbing stairs, the absolute joy of eating dumplings... just using my vocal cords. It brought me right back to square one. But I loved every second of it."
Claire seamlessly pivoted to RDJ. "Robert, you play Master Shifu. A legendary, highly disciplined red panda who is tasked with training Po. How did Regal pitch this to you while you were in the middle of shooting [Iron Man]?"
RDJ crossed his legs, resting his hands on his knees with absolute theatrical gravity.
"Well, Claire, you have to understand the psychological whiplash I was dealing with." Robert deadpanned. "One minute, I am Tony Stark, a billionaire genius playboy flying around in a multi-million-dollar armor suit, fighting terrorists. The next minute, Regal pulls me aside on set. He says, 'Robert, I need you to play a tiny, furry creature who is constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown because of an incompetent, over-enthusiastic kid.'"
Robert gestured broadly toward Andrew. "I looked across the set, saw Andrew accidentally knocking over a stack of prop cups and apologizing profusely to a grip, and I looked back at Regal and said, 'Say no more. I don't even need a script. I will just channel my natural, everyday exasperation toward this kid.'"
Andrew buried his face in his hands as Grace and Ross chuckled beside him.
"But in all seriousness." Robert continued, dropping the joke for a moment of genuine reflection. "The script completely won me over. Shifu may come across as a grumpy old mentor, but underneath that he's a man haunted by his failure with Tai Lung, and the story forces him to abandon his obsession with control and trust someone who couldn't be more different from what he expected. That's a beautiful journey to play. And, as an added bonus, I get to yell at Andrew without HR getting involved."
"It translates beautifully on screen." Claire noted, turning her attention to the far end of the couch. "Ross, this announcement genuinely caught the industry off guard. At the time, you were already filming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as Albus Dumbledore, the Supreme Mugwump himself, yet you still signed on to voice Master Oogway, an ancient, soft-spoken turtle. What made you say yes?"
Ross Oakley, one of Hollywood's most respected veterans, shifted comfortably in his seat, his quiet demeanor lacking Robert's flamboyant charisma or Andrew's restless energy yet carrying an unmistakable presence that commanded the room without effort.
"Because Regal asked." Ross said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that instantly commanded the room.
He offered a rare, faint smile. "I was sitting in my trailer in London, trying to figure out the emotional blocking for a duel with Voldemort, and Regal sent me a package. Inside is a sketch of this turtle surrounded by cherry blossoms, and a single page of dialogue."
Ross looked at Claire. "You have to understand, after decades in this industry, I have read countless scripts and spoken thousands of lines, yet the dialogue Regal wrote for Oogway possessed a quiet, devastating wisdom that's incredibly rare in cinema, especially in an animated film."
He recited the line from memory, his voice dropping into that perfect, resonant cadence: "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present."
The studio fell completely silent, and for a brief moment no one so much as stirred, the quiet weight Ross infused into those words sending goosebumps racing up Claire's arms.
"When I read that." Ross finished quietly. "I called him immediately. I told him I didn't care if I was playing a reptile. I wanted to speak those words into existence."
"It's breathtaking." Claire agreed softly, shaking off the spell.
She turned to the final guest. "And Grace. You play Master Tigress. The most fierce, disciplined, and stoic member of the Furious Five. You are coming off incredible dramatic performances in [Following] and [Iron Man]. Was voice acting a difficult transition for you?"
Grace Violet remained perfectly composed, her impeccable posture matched only by the small, knowing smile gracing her lips.
"It was challenging in a different way." Grace admitted. "Tigress has spent her entire life burying her vulnerability beneath absolute physical and mental discipline, making Po everything she was conditioned to reject: chaotic, emotional, and utterly unpredictable."
She glanced playfully at Andrew. "Regal basically told me, 'Grace, I need you to sound incredibly competent, highly lethal, and completely exhausted by Andrew's existence.' It was a very natural fit for me."
"Hey!" Andrew protested, pointing an accusing finger at her as the crew laughed. "I am starting to feel like this entire casting process was just Regal finding an excuse for all of you to psychoanalyze me!"
"It's working, isn't it?" RDJ quipped, patting Andrew's shoulder.
"It really is." Claire laughed, looking at the easy, effortless camaraderie between the four of them.
Anyone watching could see they weren't merely colleagues. Years at LIE Studios had forged them into a tightly knit family.
"Before we wrap up." Claire said, leaning forward. "We have to talk about the PR surrounding this film. Pixy Studios tried to start a moral panic about [John Wick], demanding more 'wholesome' films. Regal responded by dropping a teaser for [Kung Fu Panda] where it looked like Po was going to be violently impaled on spikes, only for it to be a watermelon. Did you guys know he was going to do that?"
Andrew threw his head back, laughing loudly. "None of us knew! I was sitting in my apartment, saw the teaser drop on Twitter, and I literally had a heart attack. I texted Regal in all caps asking if he had secretly turned my panda movie into an R-rated slasher!"
Ross pointed out quietly. "...and it got the entire world talking about an animated movie in the same breath as live-action blockbusters."
"It certainly did." Claire smiled, gathering her notes as the segment drew to a close. "Spider-Man, Iron Man, Dumbledore, and the stoic heart of LIE Studios, all coming together to bring Ancient China to life. [Kung Fu Panda] opens in exactly two days, and if the chemistry in this room is any indication, audiences are in for something truly spectacular. Thank you all for being here."
"Thanks for having us, Claire." Andrew beamed.
"Remember, buy tickets." Robert pointed at the camera. "Or I will have the turtle come after you."
Ross just rolled his eyes, but he was smiling.
"And we are clear!" the floor director called out.
The red lights faded. The four actors instantly dropped the formal posture, devolving back into easy, overlapping chatter as they unclipped their microphones.
Andrew bumped his shoulder against RDJ's as they stood up. "Can you finally admit that you actually liked playing my master."
Robert adjusted his jacket. "I liked the part where I got to hit you with a bamboo stick, yes."
Grace linked her arm through Ross's as they walked off the stage. "How is the Harry Potter shooting finished, by the way? Did Lena treat you well?"
"She is brilliant." Ross murmured, his tone filled with genuine respect. "A completely different energy than Chris, but exactly what the story needs."
They walked out of the studio together, four of the biggest stars on the planet, completely relaxed in each other's orbit.
They had all been plucked from different corners of the industry, some from obscurity, some from the ashes of ruined careers, all brought together by a singular director who saw what they could be before anyone else did.
In two days, [Kung Fu Panda] would hit theaters, and Regal Seraphsail would prove, once again, that whether it was a blood-soaked assassin, a billionaire in an iron suit, or a clumsy, dumpling-eating panda….
