Blaize did not want to get out of bed when she woke up. The reason was clear and bold in her head, a heavy, cold feeling of dread in her stomach. She was terrified that Selene had passed away in the night. She had found it nearly impossible to sleep, and when she finally did , she had woken up expecting a solemn knock on her door—from Isolde, from her mother, bearing the news she couldn't bear to hear.
But the knock never came.
Even though she was almost crippled with fear, she found that she could not just stay hidden in her room. The need to see Selene, to know for herself, was stronger than her fear . So she was out of bed before she could talk herself out of it, her heart pounding a frantic, painful rhythm against her ribs as she headed to Selene's room.
