Chapter 106 - Blood on the Wind

June 19, 1996. 1230 (pm). IFOR Command, Major Tiff just returned to his office from lunch and found another message lying there. He called in the secretary. "Corporal Jones?" "Yes, Sir." "Did anybody enter my office while I was at lunch?" he asked. "No, Sir! I've been on duty here since 0800, sir. I can assure you that nobody entered your office while you were out, Sir." The Major didn't feel he could take the Corporal to task as he received a similar note just yesterday, while sitting at the table.

"Thank you, Corporal. That will be all" he said and dismissed said Corporal. "Sparrows turning to ducks"…the Major retrieved the first message, and the map of the area. Looking at the map, the Major saw the nearby river. Ducks indeed, he thought. The Major then pulled the files on the men on that mission – the only new man was Fenix, who apparently gave up Officers training to gain experience. The Major called CTCRM.

"Commander. Major Tiff, IFOR." "What can I do for you, Major?" asked the Commander. "Fenix. What can you tell me about him?" the Major asked. "Good man. Dedicated to his team. Creative, intelligent, results driven." Responded the Commander. "Why did he give up the Officers training program?" asked the Major. "Kid grew up on the streets. Parents were murdered when he was very young. He hasn't had many good role models growing up. Fenix said he wanted to 'experience' what a good officer was like, from a grunt's perspective, and he couldn't very well get that as an officer. Said he was willing to use the time until next offering to get that experience." Replied the Commander. "Mmm. Tell me Commander, did weird things happen when he was with you?" asked the Major. "Ha….ha ha ha. That was quick! Major, Fenix has some, let's call it unique and specialized training that would blow your socks off, if you knew…" "Commander – he is on mission. A secret mission I am not at liberty to discuss, except to say it didn't go as planned. I have no direct communication with the team, yet I am mysteriously receiving …..cryptic messages from, I assume them. The only new member of the team is Fenix." "With Fenix expect the unexpected, Major." Responded the Commander. "Hah! Someone called the phone line yesterday. No identification. The last thing they said was 'expect the unexpected'. Must have been your man, Fenix." Said the Major. "No, Major – your man, now. He won't disappoint, I'm sure." Replied the Commander. "Anything else I should know?" asked the Major. "He wouldn't want me to sweet talk you, Major. Oh, and Major – the weirdest of the things that happen around Fenix, they fall under State secrets; to the highest of levels. If you have questions or concerns, I am sure you will be entertained by the answers he gives." Concluded the Commander. "Yes, well thank you, Commander" responded the Major and hung up.

June 19, 1996. 12:30 pm. Beauxbaton's Acadame' de Magik. Hermione felt a slight tug on her robes as she was sitting in the Great Hall eating lunch. She felt a small hand put something in her pocket. Hermione reached in and pulled out the message. After reading it, she took a few last bites of her food, put it all away, and quickly walked to the library. Since Evan had entered the military, Hermione had been preparing for a day like this. When at Hogwarts, she asked Madam Pomphrey for some instruction. At Beauxbaton's, she familiarized herself with their library and their healer. Hermione quickly found the Healer's Compendium of Healer Spells (in French, of course) and turned to the section on penetration wounds. She quickly copied the pages describing the theory of the extraho spell. The spell results in the extraction of penetrating objects. The theory of using this spell for healing outlined how to visualize the object and extract it along the path of penetration, and sealing the flesh. Hermione softly called to Dobby and gave him the papers, and added a note of her own.

A moment later Hermione felt her communicator mirror buz. She opened the compact and saw the Commander's face, and her hope crashed and crumbled. Tears began streaming down her face, and she was struggling to breathe. "Hermione. Hermione! What's wrong?" he asked. "I….I…this isn't a social call is it?" she asked. "No Hermione. By your reaction I figure you have an inkling of what's going on?" "I know he is out on mission. I know it's secret. I know something went wrong and a few of his team are wounded. He either can't or doesn't want to use his communicator. His message said he was OK, but…but..Evan could be dying and he would say he was OK!" "Well, I wanted to touch bases with you. You and he are connected, so I figured you might have been contacted. His CO called me, you know. He asked me if funny stuff happens around your boy! I told him he had NO idea! Apparently, you aren't the only recipient of his messages – I figure he's OK, and will be back at HQ soon." The Commander responded. Hermione was calmed by the Commander's words. "Thank you, Commander. I greatly appreciate you calling me." She said. "No worries, Hermione. Bye" and the communication ceased.
